Chapter 189 Stay away from me, if you don't want to die
Rhys's POV

The phone went silent.

“Coach,” I called after a few minutes, my heart beat accelerating.

“I told you to go through the document. Did I give you a go ahead order to sign it?” He demanded, anger etched in his voice.

I swallowed hard. “You didn't but—”

“Get yourself to the rink right now.” He yelled, hanging up the next second.

I turned around immediately and bolted out of the door.

“Rhys, who was that? Is everything okay?” Mark's voice came from behind.

I increased my pace, ignoring him completely. I was almost at the front door when Vanessa's mother blocked my path.

“You didn't have lunch. What about you staying for dinner?”

“Get out of my way!” I sneered, having not even the slightest patience left.

“We're family, Rhys. Why don't we have dinner together even if for once?” She pressed further.

“Did you get married to me or give birth to me?” I demanded.

Her brows furrowed slightly but I pushed her aside before she could say anything. I got into my car and Mark joined me just as I turned on the engine. Without a word, I fastened my seat belt and hit the road immediately.

A few minutes later after a reckless drive, I pulled up in front of the school's rink and got out of the car.

Mark jumped out of the car and emptied his whole stomach into the gutter nearby. He was breathing so heavily like he had been chased down by a dog.

“One of these days, you're going to get yourself killed.” He said, after he got himself back.

“Stay away from me then, if you don't want to die.” I advised.

I locked my car and hurried inside without sparing him another glance.

“Yeah, I'll remember to do that.” He said, trailing after me.

I made it through the long hallway and finally into the school's rink. Sometimes I wondered what exactly the hallway was for.

The rink held few players in their full hockey wear. Reed stood at the edge of the rink, scrolling through the tablet on his hand.

“He's already training new members.” Mark said as we made our way towards Reed. “We all haven't even been scouted yet.”

I shrugged without a word, I wouldn't even blame him. The Knights have been a popular, winning name for years. He wouldn't want the name to be stolen away all of a sudden.

A guy suddenly blocked my path. “You're Captain Rhys, right?”

I patted his shoulder, forcing a smile. “Nice meeting you too.”

“Oh my gosh! I can't believe I'm finally meeting you.” He gushed, giggling from ear to ear.

“I can't say the same.” I said, brushing him aside.

“That's quite rude of you to a fan.” Mark pointed out.

“He's just as rude and proud as the rumor says.” A voice came from behind before I could say anything.

“What's so great about being a captain?” Another added.

“You could have just smiled or maybe taken a picture with them.” Mark said.

I halted in my steps and turned to face Mark. “Why don't you go ahead and do that for them? I have better things to do with my time.”

Mark snickered. “I was just teasing you. You're already behaving like a top star. Are you sure I can still be your friend when you become so popular?”

“Of course, you won't.” I said, turning my back on him. “Because you will either be more popular than me or standing next to me.”

He had barely finished talking when the guy's voice rang out.

“He isn't even proud enough. If I ever beat the record more than five times in a row and rank the junior hockey club board for more than five years. No one would be able to talk to me.”

“You're just delusional.” A voice said in a mocking tone.

“That's the goal. Be as delusional as you want and work towards making it reality. Captain Rhys never suddenly woke up in that position.” The guy said. “He only believed and worked towards it.”

I turned toward the guy and he was looking at me with all smiles. “Name?”

“Colin,” he yelled.

“I’ll be leaving my number with the coach, call me when your delusion becomes reality.” I said with a smile.

He nodded. “I won't disappoint you, Captain.”

“I'll be rooting for you, Colin.” I added before turning my back on him. He was saying something else but my mind really didn't grasp it. But he really reminded me of myself and the other guys represented my father.

Colin was right. Everything you want and desire has to start as a delusion and only you could bring it to reality.

“Rhys,” Mark waved his hand in front of my face, dragging me back to reality.

That was when I realized we were standing in front of Reed.

“You seem to have a lot going on.” Reed said with an arched brow.

I shook my head. “I'm fine. It's nothing to worry about.”

Reed was one of the people that stood next to be me in my worst and most despicable moment. I could easily confide in him but I couldn't bring myself to do so, not when I could handle it myself.

He stared at me for a while before handing the tablet to a guy standing nearby. “Let's talk in my office.”

Silence stretched in between us as we made our way to his office.

After a few minutes, we got to his office and we sat opposite each other.

“Rhys, do you understand the document you signed?” He asked, his gaze fixed on me.

I hesitated before nodding. “I read it carefully before signing.”

“Do you think that's all the rules they use?” He asked.

I blinked slowly. “I don't understand, Coach.”

He pulled out his top drawer and brought out an old envelope. Something I couldn't pinpoint flashed in his eyes before he placed the envelope before me.

“Why don't you go through this one too and get back to me?” He said, his voice thin.
