Chapter 179 A letter from Black City Hockey team
Chapter 179 A letter from Black City Hockey team
Rhys's POV
“Do you now understand what I was saying?” Mark asked.
I couldn't answer him as I kept staring at the words, trying to make sense of it. I asked for a loan, not a position. He must be kidding if he thinks I'm going to give up on my career and work for his company.
“I don't understand.” I said, getting to my feet. “He owes me an explanation.”
I was about to turn to the door when Mark blocked me.
“Do you think running off to him would change anything? You might not have signed up for this but you need his money. He has an advantage over you.”
I scoffed. “What do you expect me to do? Accept his offer?” I turned and picked up the other envelope. “I just got a scouting offer. You should understand what that means more than anyone.”
“What about the money? How are you going to go about it?” Mark asked. “I don't even have up to that amount in my account right now”
“That's why I need to meet him. He needs to explain to me exactly why he is giving me a position I didn't ask for.” I snapped, shoving Mark aside.
“I wouldn't really advise you to do that, Rhys. Why don't we go through the documents first?”
I paused by the door and stood stiffly for a while, clenching my jaw tightly. I wanted nothing more than to go straight to my father's face and pour out all my anger.
This was the exact reason I hated going to meet him. He was a businessman and all he cared about was his capital and himself. I was always just a liability and a responsibility he was forced to take up.
“There surely has to be a way out. Let's just take a look.” Mark pressed further.
I turned around and forced myself to return back to the bed. I sat down on it and began skimming through the documents.
The first page was filled with company rules and regulations. I barely registered any word on it as I moved to the next page. It had a one year plan that included how I would work, how much I get paid weekly, the bonuses and other rewards involved.
When I saw the total money I was going to make a month, I knew the offer was too real to be good. But something suddenly clicked in my mind, why was it just a year's plan?
I flipped to the front page again. “Application to work as a director in the finance department for one year.”
The ‘one year’ was smaller than the rest of the words and that must be why I missed it. And I was very certain, my father had intentionally done it like that.
That was when I realized something. My father had handed me the document just after I had asked him for a loan. It seems like he had either expected my request or had planned it out.
Either way, the thought made my heart drop. Was it connected to Clare? Was there something I'm missing?
I forced the thoughts behind me and continued reading. After the bonuses were details about what my work was all about. I barely caught any of the words before flipping to the last page.
It had a few words and then two signature spots. The first bore my father's name and was already signed. The second had my name under a blank signature spot.
My hand clenched tightly around the document for half a second before I flung it away.
“Even in your wildest dreams, father. I'm not joining your company.” I hissed through gritted teeth.
“Take a deep breath, Rhys. This is the exact reaction your father expects. Do you want to give him that?” Mark asked.
I turned to face Mark. He knew how best to use his words and get on my nerves. I got to my feet and walked straight to the fridge at the right corner of my room.
I pulled it open and grabbed a bottle of beer. I opened it up and gulped it down in one go.
“He would get more than the reaction he expects.” I snarled, crushing the empty can in my hand.
I tossed it into the trash can after a few seconds and returned to the bed.
“You really need to just crash out. Maybe for just a second or two.” Mark jokes with a light chuckle.
I flashed him a cold smile before picking up the other envelope.
Mark got to his feet, he walked straight to the floor where the document lay and picked it up. “What's in this that's capable of irking you so badly?”
I pretended like I didn't hear him as I opened the document in my hand.
My hand trembled a little as I brought out the document. I had waited for this moment for almost twenty years.
“A letter from Black City Hockey team.” stared back at me as it was on the right top of the document.
I swallowed hard. The team was the best in the country and coincidentally, the same team Reed was in before he started coaching.
“Which team?” Mark asked, studying my expression.
“Black city.” I replied.
“Oh my gosh! Man, you're so lucky.” Mark gushed, slapping my arm. “I hope my letter arrives this week.”
I nodded, struggling to keep my emotions in check. Black city was the best but it would obviously come with a lot of rules.
I inhaled deeply before going through the document. I couldn't bring myself to skim through it so I followed the words slowly, one after the other.
By the time I was on the last page. My face was beaming with all smiles. The document was basically saying that they admired my talent and wanted me to join them.
I had a year to prove my skill one last time before I would get an official invite and get into the team.
I reached for the edge of my bed and pulled out the top drawer. I brought out a pen and in the next second, I was scribbling my signature on the last page to accept their offer.
