Chapter 178 When did I apply for that?
Rhys's POV
“Who's giving up on hockey?” Reed asked, stepping into the room.
“No one, Coach.” I said, snatching the document from Mark and hitting his head slightly. “What the heck is going on in your head?”
“But–”
I shot him a glare. “The document was handed to me by my father today. I haven't even gone through it.”
I bit the inside of my cheeks as I couldn't deny the fact that my heart was beating too fast. Mark's expression was the most honest thing about him and my father's last words before I left the mansion wasn't helping matters.
I was more than curious to find out what document my father had handed to me.
Mark lowered his head, swallowing whatever he wanted to say again.
“You just scared me for nothing.” Reed said, walking towards me. “I'm here to break the good news.”
I studied Reed for a few seconds. From the way he grinned from ear to ear, I was sure it had to do with me getting scouted.
I hid my trembling hands behind me as I got to my feet.
Reed patted my shoulders twice before handing me a brown envelope. “Congratulations kid, you earned this.”
He flashed me another smile before heading toward the door. But he suddenly stopped and tilted his head slightly.
“Let's talk about the details when you have gone through the document.”
He opened the door and walked out before I could say anything.
I slumped back onto the bed after the door closed. My eyes stared at the two bron envelopes and I couldn't shake off the unsettling feeling overwhelming me.
“Why did your father give you the document?” Mark suddenly asked, dragging me back to reality.
“I needed his help.” I replied, flatly.
His eyes widened. “You needed his help? Like you needed that old man's help?”
I nodded, not surprised at how shocked Mark looked. “I'll explain the details later but right now, I want to be left alone.”
The frown on Mark's face deepened. “I'm afraid but I can't leave you all alone. Something is going on and you are hiding it from me.”
“Mark, I will appreciate if you could—’
Mark shook his head. “No, I'm your best friend. What happened to telling me everything? What happened to confiding in me?”
“Mark, I want to be but some things, I just have to solve it all alone.”
Mark chuckled. “Solve it all alone? Is it about Clare and Zane? Did you go to ask your father for help to engage her?”
“Words, mark. Please, don't cross your boundaries.” I warned him again.
Mark ran his fingers through his hair, jumping to his feet. “No, Rhys. Make me understand and don't use that word boundary on me. You hated your father and swore to never ask him for help and then suddenly you went to ask him for help. What’s so big and important that you couldn't ask me?”
I placed my hand on my face. I had wanted to handle this all alone but one thing was certain, Mark wouldn't be leaving here until I explained what's wrong to him.
I could go ahead and shout or walk out on him but the Mark I know would follow me all around like a shadow.
I inhaled deeply, my hand tightening around the envelope still in my hands. “It's about Clare.”
Mark arched his brow. “What about her? If it's about her engagement it's all over the school website so I already know about it.”
“Can you take it down for me?” I asked, turning to face him.
“You want to take it down for her? Aren't you meant to be angry?” he asked.
I clenched my jaw. “I was… I was angry over the news for more than three days and I'm still angry now.”
“So why are you asking me to take it down?”
I hesitated for half a second. “Clare is temporarily blind.”
“What if she's temporarily blind, does that give her the right to—” he paused, lifting his gaze to meet my eyes. “What did you just say?”
I nodded. “Exactly what you heard. She's temporarily blind and her father is in a coma.”
Mark went silent and rigid.
“You wanted to hear the news right?” I asked, giving him a nudge.
Mark's voice shook. “How is she? Is she ever going to be okay?”
“I hope so. The doctor asked to keep our fingers crossed.” I answered.
He lowered his face. “I’m sorry. I didn't know what was going on.”
“You don't have to apologize.” I reminded him.
“No, I really need to do more than apologize.”
“Then, you are apologizing to the wrong person. It's her you're meant to apologize to not me so save it for when you visit her.”
He nodded. “Do you think that's why she got engaged to Zane? I mean that might be the reason she would be getting engaged to him, right?”
“I don't think so. Even though her father is in a coma and she needs money. Her step mother with her personality wouldn't allow Zane to engage her due to her condition.”
I paused for half a second. “I think something is definitely going on.”
“So you visited your father to borrow money from him?” he asked the question I had been waiting for.
“I visited him to take out a loan. I'm not so sure what the real problem is so I needed a huge amount of money.” I corrected him.
“Huge amount of money?” He repeated. “Like how much?”
“Ten million.” I replied, stretching my legs.
He let out a low gasp. “That's quite huge. Didn't you think about the consequences your father would provide?”
I shifted my gaze to the document beside me and picked it up. “Why don't we find out together.”
My blood ran cold when I saw the heading of the document. “Application to work as a director in the finance department.”
My mind did a black flip. “When did I apply for that?”
