Chapter 56 Workplace
Chapter 56 Workplace
Liam
My mother was dead. Long ago.
Before I even got a chance to meet her because I was a damn baby. I’d killed my mum at childbirth.
Dad had employed the woman I’d known my whole life —Lauren — as a nanny to me, and it was much easier since she was also a nursing single mother.
So, she’d moved in with us and took care of me. Not until, her baby’s daddy won custody of their daughter and took her away.
Years went by and she and my dad got involved romantically and got married, which didn’t even work out.
It made sense why my dad took me with him to Italy after the divorce. Why she didn’t get custody and didn’t bother reaching out in the ten years I’d gone.
Worse still, I didn’t even suspect anything.
It was all because she wasn’t my mother. She only took care of me because my dad paid her and later on, she despised me when my father made it clear he wasn’t going to send me away just so her daughter could come in.
This whole thing was fucked up. Especially hearing it from someone else. Thompson.
Yeah, while he was trying to gather evidence against Lauren and her daughter, Abigail only to discover they were in fact family.
And she was trying to get me married to her daughter. It was sick, really.
Two days had gone by, but I remained in town consistently staring at the number Maria had given me. Maya’s new number.
I hadn’t texted or called because I wasn’t sure she wanted to talk to me and worst still, I didn’t want to out Maria.
I’d lingered around the hospital that day and ran into Maria who was leaving in a rush and spared a few minutes to hand me Maya’s contact.
In her words: “I trust you to make this right again. Make her believe there’s a reason you did what you did. I just hope it’s convincing enough,”
It made me feel hopeful that there might be a slim chance that Maya might forgive me but still, I haven’t worked up the courage to text her.
Speaking in person would be very much preferable but then again…
I sighed, tucking my hands into my pocket as I stared at the restaurant that had been recommended to me as one of the best in town.
One thing was certain, the food given by the hotel I’ve been staying in was trash. It tasted really horrible.
And considering everything I was going through, I definitely had no tolerance for horribly cooked food.
So here I was.
I made my way in and towards one of the tables nearest to a window that somehow faced the exit. I could see whoever was coming in and going out.
I sat down.
The place looked lovely and peaceful. Maybe, it was as a result of the slow music played in the background or it was just me. But something about the place gave me peace.
And for a second, I let myself forget about all my problems and just let myself soak in the peace for as long as I could.
A brunette dressed in a uniform approached me. Her hair was tied into a bun and she had a wide smile on her face.
Not the polite kind of smile. It was the ‘I know you’ kind.
No. I seriously didn’t want to interact with any fans.
“Hi,” she breathed as she stopped in front of my table. “Can I get your order?”
I sat up straighter and pressed my lips into a line.
“I’d love a beer, if you have one.” I said and she nodded, her grin growing wider as she scribbled into her note.
“Is that all?” She asked, staring at me from underneath her lashes. The muscles in my jaw tightened for a second before I nodded.
“Yeah. I’ll let you know if I want something else,” I mumbled and she nodded before inching closer.
“Can I get your autograph? I’m really a big fan of yours,” she whispered gleefully and gave a small smile and then a nod. It was just an autograph.
She handed me her pen.
“Your note?”
“My tits would be nice,” she said and dropped her note on the table before reaching for her buttons.
“Woah. No, please.” Jesus, this was awkward. She paused with her fingers on her buttons.
“I would just sign on your note,” I gave a reassuring smile so she wouldn't feel embarrassed. She looked slightly disappointed but nodded.
I quickly signed at the bottom of her note and handed it back to her. She thanked me and went her way.
I sighed.
I knew it was only going to be a matter of time before she’d tell everyone and I'd be surrounded with people I’ve never seen in my entire life.
The door pushed open and someone walked in with the same uniform the girl had on. I looked away.
“Hey. Why are you here?” A guy asked from somewhere around but I didn’t bother locating the owner of the voice. Grabbing my phone, I stared at Maya’s number like I’ve been doing for the two days.
“It isn’t up to a week,” The voice continued.
“I couldn’t just sit doing nothing,”
I perked up almost immediately, my eyes snapping up. I recognized that voice.
Maya.
My eyes darted around, searching for her. It fell on a lady whose back was turned to me. Her hair was also tied in a bun just like the other girl and she was speaking to a guy at the other end of the counter.
My heart beat spiked up.
It was indeed Maya.
Hell, she worked here. Was this fate? Or just another coincidence?
