Exposing deceit

Miranda/Laila's POV

I stepped out of Jonathan's office, my heels striking the marble floor with a rhythm that mirrored my heartbeat-steady, purposeful, and brimming with victory. Clara, my ever-efficient assistant, was already waiting outside, her tablet clutched tightly to her chest. She shot me an anxious glance, as though gauging the outcome of my confrontation. I didn't need to say anything; the triumphant smirk playing on my lips said it all.

"Let's go," I said sharply, brushing past her toward the elevator. Clara followed without a word. As the elevator doors slid shut, I finally let out a small exhale, my fingers flexing against the handle of my designer handbag.

"Clara," I began as the elevator descended, "I need you to schedule an emergency meeting with the board. Send the details to the group chat. Make sure everyone is there."

She nodded swiftly, tapping away on her tablet. "Right away, ma'am."

The ride back to our headquarters felt longer than usual, despite the smooth hum of the car's engine. I kept my gaze fixed out the tinted window, watching the city blur past. My mind churned with thoughts of the upcoming meeting. Today wasn't just about reclaiming what belonged to me; it was about solidifying my authority, making sure no one dared challenge me again.

When we finally arrived, the familiar sight of our towering building came into view. Employees scurried around the lobby like ants, their whispers fading into silence the moment I stepped through the glass doors. Heads bowed respectfully, and I acknowledged their deference with a nod, making my way toward the elevators.

Once inside my office, I sank into my chair with a sigh. The plush leather felt comforting, but my mind refused to rest. Today had been a battlefield, and though I had claimed the upper hand, the war was far from over. Clara entered quietly, placing a steaming cup of coffee on my desk.

"Five minutes," I murmured, cradling the cup in my hands. "That's all I need."

Clara nodded and retreated without a word. I closed my eyes, allowing the rich aroma of coffee to fill my senses. My fingers drummed lightly against the ceramic mug as I mentally rehearsed my speech. Every word had to be precise, every gesture calculated. The board members were vultures; one sign of weakness, and they'd pounce.

Five minutes later, I set the empty mug aside, squared my shoulders, and made my way to the boardroom. The weight of the day fell behind me as I straightened my spine, my heels clicking against the polished floor.

When I entered, all eyes turned to me. The atmosphere was thick with tension, the kind that made the air feel heavier. At the far end of the table sat Mara, my stepsister, her lips curled in a smug smile that she didn't bother hiding. Her mother, Mrs. Hamilton, sat beside her, exuding an air of overconfidence. They had no idea what was coming.

I moved to the head of the table, my rightful place as CEO, and took my seat with the poise of a queen on her throne. "Good afternoon," I began, my voice steady and commanding. "Let's get straight to the point. As of a few minutes ago, Mr. Jonathan has made the payment owed to our company. The funds are now in our account."

I paused, allowing my words to sink in. My gaze swept across the room, lingering on the faces of those who had opposed me. I could see the faint flickers of surprise, begrudging respect, and, in some cases, resentment. It was exactly the reaction I had anticipated.

"And so what?" Mara's sharp voice cut through the silence. She rolled her eyes, her tone dripping with jealousy. "The payment was supposed to be made anyway."

I turned my attention to her, letting a cold smile curve my lips. "Ah, Mara. Always quick to undermine others' efforts. But I assure you, what I've done today goes beyond mere payments. I've also uncovered some troubling truths."

Her brows furrowed, but I didn't give her time to respond. Rising from my chair, I placed both hands firmly on the table, leaning forward slightly. "From this moment on, there will be a change in management. Both Mrs. Hamilton and Miss Mara are hereby suspended from their positions within this company."

The room erupted into murmurs, shock evident on every face. Mara shot up from her seat, her chair screeching against the floor. Her face was a mask of fury, her hands trembling as she pointed an accusing finger at me.

"No! I won't accept this!" she yelled, her voice shrill with rage. "What right do you have to suspend me and my mother? Who do you think you are?!"

I remained seated, my expression unchanging as I met her outburst with an air of indifference. "I'm the CEO," I said simply, my voice calm but laced with authority. "And if you think this is a misjudgment, perhaps you'd like to review the evidence."

I gestured to Clara, who stepped forward and placed a thick file on the table. I opened it, pulling out a stack of documents and spreading them in front of Mara and her mother. Clara began distributing copies to the rest of the board members, her movements precise and efficient.

Mara's eyes widened in horror as she skimmed through the papers. Her hands trembled, the documents slipping from her grasp. "No… this can't be… This is fake!" she stammered, her voice cracking. Tears welled up in her eyes as she desperately clutched at the papers, as though tearing them would make the truth disappear. "Don't believe her! She's slandering us!"

I leaned back in my chair, crossing my arms as a cold smile spread across my face. "Slandering? Mara, you've been lining your pockets for years, jeopardizing the company's interests. These documents prove everything-fraud, embezzlement, kickbacks. And let's not forget your mother's involvement."

The room fell into a tense silence as the board members pored over the evidence. Some nodded in agreement, their expressions grim, while others glanced uneasily at each other. As expected, Mr. Williams, one of Mrs. Hamilton's staunch supporters, stood up, his face flushed with anger.

"This is absurd!" he barked. "We should hear from Mrs. Hamilton and her daughter before jumping to conclusions!"

"Really, Mr. Williams?" I asked, arching a brow. "The evidence is right in front of you. Or do you have something to hide as well?"

His face turned a deeper shade of red, and he sank back into his chair, muttering under his breath. The murmurs grew louder, the board members beginning to echo my sentiments.

"They must be suspended!" one member declared, slamming his fist on the table.

"Enough is enough!" another added.

Clara stepped forward again, her voice calm yet firm. "I'll take this file to the higher authorities for further action."

I nodded. "Good. Let the proper channels handle this."

Mrs. Hamilton finally spoke, her voice trembling. "Laila, stop this! Don't be so harsh!"

I let out a soft chuckle, leaning forward slightly. "Harsh? Oh, stepmother, I could send you both to jail right now if I wanted to. But I won't. All I ask is that you return every penny you've stolen from this company."

She looked utterly defeated, her shoulders slumping as she whispered, "Fine. I'll return the money."

The murmurs grew louder, words like "thief" and "deceiver" filling the air.

I stood, signaling the end of the meeting. "Consider this a lesson. Deceit will never go unpunished under my leadership."
