Chapter 464 Mild Reassurance
Chapter 464 Mild Reassurance
DEVON
Amelia's going to hate him for this, but that's okay, because he doesn't plan on ever seeing her again.
He means it this time. He's done with this shit. He had his chance, he fucked it up a hundred years ago. It's time to get over it. If there was ever a part of him that thought he'd get a chance with her, that part of him died a while back. She loves Damien Keller. He lost her a long time ago. That doesn't necessarily mean that he's content with the outcome, but he'll admit defeat. Staying here is slowly killing him.
She's going to be alright. Leaving her back there was a dick move, sure, but he stands by what he said to her; when everyone finds out that she did it, there will be no revenge. He helped her along the way, but no one needs to know that. The Huntingtons won't dream of touching her, especially when the truth about Damien comes out. It would be an entirely different story with him.
He glances at his watch. Five more minutes in there and he'd miss his flight. He can't miss it. Booking it took a part of him. He knows he has to leave this city, especially after what happened in that hotel room. There might be a war and he's not going to get stuck in the middle of it like he did last year. He's not profiting from it, so why should he willingly put himself in danger? Again, Amelia is a Keller now. That's her shield, no one will harm her. She'll be living under Damien's wing her whole life, and when he dies, that'll still be the case. People like Damien Keller don't ever die, even he knows that.
He can't help but check his watch again. Where'd the time go? He should've booked the flight for tomorrow, but he didn't want to wait. He didn't want to risk canceling. He spent two hours under that bed, waiting. He made sure that he had everything he'd possibly need with him, including the gun with the silencer. He wanted Ash to be distracted so he could pounce. If Amelia hadn't brought that revolver along, that would take even longer. It's a good thing she did, even though that means she didn't trust him entirely. That's okay, she's learning. She'll be alright without him.
He can leave in peace.
He'll remain true to his word; he won't come looking for her even if he returns. He has no control over destiny, he isn't even sure if he believes in it, but if she one day happens to cross his path, that'll be an entirely different story. For now, leaving is his only option.
He arrives at the building. She's not waiting outside, so he honks once to let her know that he has arrived. She'll be down at any minute, she's probably already packed. He's right; she's rushing towards the car with a suitcase in hand and it hasn't even been one minute. She enters the car and immediately kisses him on the cheek. "You came," she says, sighing.
"I told you I would." He has been honest lately, which is great indication that things might change. The fact that he's doing this is incredulous as it is. Who would've thought that he, Devon Tyler, would be traveling the world in the company of a woman? Yes, he's been seeing Kaitlyn, his old coworker, the entire time. He always knew she had an enormous crush on him-no surprise there-and she'd do his dirty work occasionally. She's loyal to him, she admires him. They're good in bed. But that's not the only reason why he stuck with her. She'll never know, though. It's better this way.
He's not making any promises, though.
He looks at her now. In the dim lighting of the car, she looks just like Amelia. Her hair is the same shade as hers, a glossy dark brown; their lips are roughly the same shape, although Amelia's lips are plumper. Their skin tone is the same, they're about the same height. When he closes his eyes, it feels like he's holding Amelia, not Kaitlyn. He came to terms with the fact that he'll never have her, but that doesn't mean he can't have someone who looks like her.
A knock-off version of Amelia is better than no Amelia at all.
In his book, at least.
"Ready?" he asks her. She nods eagerly and he starts the car. This isn't how he thought he'd end up, but he's content with the outcome. They're on the way to the airport, and he keeps staring out the window, at the city that made him and broke him. It's safe to say that LA was his first love. When he first came here, everything was new and exciting. He had lived in a small town his whole life. He didn't know what luxury was. He didn't know how addictive money could be. Times were simpler back then, but he can't genuinely say he was happier. No, he's always been fucked up.
He made a lot of friends here, but he made a lot more enemies. He'll be better off someplace else, where no one knows his name. Sydney, maybe. Venice. He has a lot of options.
