Chapter 455 Hinder

Chapter 455 Hinder
DEVON

"I see," he says, giving him a death stare.

"What do you see?" he asks, leaning forward. "Tell me. This is exactly why I never joined your cause. Your head is too fucking big. It's filling this entire room right now, are you aware of that? You really think she's attracted to you after you killed her fucking husband? Are you that stupid? Sex doesn't have anything to do with getting what you want. You're biting off more than you can chew. You had the perfect opportunity to trap her and you gave it away because of your damned ego."

"I'm not going to take anything you said to the heart," he says, and Devon actually believes him. "You think ego has anything to do with this? I've wanted her in my bed from the first time I saw her. Yes, it was at Jack's party last year. I took one look at her and I knew I wanted her. I didn't know she was Damien's, not at first, but that didn't stop me. I like a bit of competition."

Devon rubs his face in frustration. "Just get to the fucking point."

"Can't you see what I'm doing here? Why do you think I only killed Damien after they got married? It wasn't coincidental, I knew she'd inherit everything that once belonged to him. I'm going to seduce her, then I'm going to marry her. It'll be much easier than signing a contract. But that will only happen if she actually shows up tomorrow. If she doesn't, we're going to plan B."

"Which is what exactly?" he asks, unable to comment on the rest. He's a lunatic, his plan is never going to work. He knows Amelia has no feelings for him, none whatsoever. Hatred and disgust is all she'll ever feel towards him.

"I'll divulge it when the time comes," he tells him. "But I think you have an idea of where this is all going. The choice is entirely hers."

"I don't know what to say to you," Devon says after a beat. He's thinking of a way to reach Amelia before it's too late. "Do you know where Ethan is now?"

Ash looks up suspiciously. "Why?"

"I want to figure out whether Amelia knows he's been released," he explains, keeping his eyes on Ash's face. "There's always that possibility. She could show up because she feels trapped and when she finds out Ethan's well-"

"That part has been taken care of," he interjects. "She already knows. She's with him now, actually."

He nods, but deep inside he's desperate. He could go back to Damien and ask Daisy for a contact number, but she won't see him. She hates him ever since he offered Amelia the job. Besides, he promised himself he'd never look at Damien Keller's face again. Going back there is out of the question. He mentioned something about moving, right? He might not even be there by tomorrow.

At least he knows that Damien didn't tell anyone about his little visit. If he had, Amelia would've confronted him about it.

Devon needs a drink, but he tells himself that getting out of here is more important. He'll drink someplace else. He stands and points a shaky finger at Ash, who is sitting across him. "If this plan of yours fails, you're on your own. I've already paid my debt, I don't owe you shit anymore."

He shrugs. "Why wouldn't it work? I've got everything taken care of. You need to be fearless to succeed, Devon. Fear is hindering, it's an enemy of progress. What's life without a bit of risk to it?"

Devon has a bitter taste in his mouth when he finally settles in the driver's seat of his car. He grips the steering wheel and forces himself to take deep breaths. Not everything is lost, they still have a chance. But that's only if he talks to Amelia about this.

He could still end Ash on his own, he doesn't need her to pull that trigger. But he owes it to her. The pleasure of killing him should be hers, that's his apology. That's how he redeems himself in her eyes. He can't give up on this plan. He's got to give it his all.

If he doesn't succeed in reaching her, he's on his own. He won't let the opportunity fly over his head. Ash will be alone and vulnerable, nothing could be more perfect.

He starts the car and backs out of the parking lot. He glances at the rear view mirror, but there's no one following him. There's no one in the backseat. He's been paranoid lately, but that's just how everything works. He's always conspiring behind someone's back, so he's afraid that the same will happen to him. It's karma. It's inevitable.

He has to start looking for her. He begins at the apartment. He'll sit in the car all night if he has to and try to send her a signal in the morning when he sees her, but he can't miss the opportunity. He needs to talk to her. She needs to show up or they're done for. They've come too far to stop now.

He sits back and waits.
