Chapter 151
ISABELLA’S P.O.V.
We decided to stop for lunch first after my stomach grumbled loudly in the car. We stopped for some pasta and shrimp and I ate more food than I normally would have. Enzo just watched me with a small smile on his face the entire time. It felt good to be able to just be out with my family and not have to worry about what was happening and who was breathing down our necks.
After lunch, we went back home and Leo and I had to get started on his school for the day. Since Carmen was gone, Enzo and I had tried to work up a schedule so we could ensure Leo still got the proper education and time he needed. Matteo and Natalia had been a great help and even Mac helped out where he could. I couldn’t have asked for a better family even if I tried.
“Mum,” Leo asked after we were rounding up and I hummed. “Do you think the baby is going to be a boy or a girl?”
“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I can find out in a few weeks or I can wait until after I have the baby to figure it out.”
“Did you find out early with me?” he asked and I shook my head.
“It was a surprise and you were the best surprise I ever got,” I pressed a kiss to his hair and he smiled.
“Uncle Matteo said that you’re going to be so busy with the new baby and you won’t have any time for me. Is that why you’re sending me away to school?”
I wanted to choke the life out of Matteo in that moment. I knew he was being harmless whenever he spoke to Leo but it was obvious Leo didn’t take it that way. I dropped the books in my hands and pulled my son into a hug. He relaxed against me and we just stood there for a full minute not saying anything but enjoying each other’s company.
“You are my son, Leonardo and I am never going to abandon you,” I told him. “Yes, I will be a bit busy with the baby when it comes but it is because babies need a lot of attention. They can’t do anything for themselves but that doesn’t mean I won’t spend all of my free time with you. We are taking you to school so you can be around people your own age and make new friends.”
“Like Roman?” he asked and I nodded.
“Exactly like Roman.” He pulled away from me to look me in the eye as if trying to figure out if I was telling the truth. “I love you and that isn’t going to change even after the baby comes, okay?”
“Okay,” he whispered, finally choosing to believe me.
“Good, now in the future, let us reduce the number of things Matteo says that we actually believe, okay?”
Leo laughed and just like that, everything was perfect.
I stayed with him in his room over the next hour just to solidify to him that I wasn’t leaving him. We left when I realized I needed a snack and I found Matteo in the dining room with Natalia. I walked over to him and slapped him upside the head. He turned to me in shock while Natalia tried and failed to hide her laugh.
“What was that for?” he exclaimed.
“That was for telling my son that I would leave him for the new baby.”
He frowned. “Your son called me fat. I was returning the favor.”
I rolled my eyes at him. “Aren’t you too old to be arguing with children, Matteo?”
“Not when the children are mean,” he mumbled and I opened my mouth to respond to him when I heard a knock on the door.
I was confused because we weren’t expecting any visitors and we didn’t hear anything from the front gate. I went to open it and was surprised to see two policemen standing there. My brows furrowed in confusion and I glanced over my shoulder to mouth at Matteo to get Enzo.
“These visits are becoming much too frequent,” I drawled crossing my arms over my chest. “Is there something that I can help you with?”
“Can we come in?” one of them asked but I refused to budge from the door.
“I’m not sure how I feel about letting you in especially not after what happened the last time a cop walked in through my doors. If you want to talk then we can talk out here.”
I knew I was being defensive but for once, I was out of my element. There was no warning call from Dante and according to Lorenzo’s informant in the force, they weren’t meant to be looking at us anymore. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Leo inching closer towards the door but I shook my head at him.
“Ma’am, we need to speak to your husband, is he inside?”
Before I could answer, Enzo walked up to the door. “Is there a problem officers?”
They cleared their throat and one of them moved closer. “Lorenzo DeLucia, you are under arrest for the murder of Benito Rodriguez. You have the right to remain silent.”
I heard the words but I didn’t completely process them until the officer brought out the handcuffs. I took a step forward but Enzo shot me a hard look that had me freezing in my spot. Surely he wasn’t just going to go with them, right? I watched as they handcuffed him and he did nothing.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I exclaimed. “What the hell is this about? On what grounds are you arresting him?”
“It’s fine, Isabella,” Enzo whispered snapping my eyes to him. He didn’t look phased one bit.
“Dad?” it was Leo’s soft voice that had me cursing. I gestured to Natalia to take him away and she tried but he wouldn’t move. “No, what’s going on? Where are they taking my dad?”
“I’ll be fine, bud,” he turned to me. “Call Samson.”
“Who the fuck is Samson?”
“Tell Matteo to call Samson and meet me at the station,” he managed out before he was led away by the officers.
