Chapter 150
ISABELLA’S P.O.V.
The officer was taken off the case two days later and the relief I felt was palpable. Things were slowly getting back to normal and the new person in charge was steering the case in a completely different direction. Everything was perfect and we were finally in a place where we could breathe which was why we found ourselves in front of the daunting private school that Lorenzo had attended as a child.
There was a woman in front of us rattling off about the benefits of the school and how it had been created over a hundred years ago. I was barely listening to her mainly because she had a high pitched voice that sounded so fake and she kept shooting sultry glances at Lorenzo. She was from our world, everyone in the school was. It was a glorified way to make connections and form alliances.
I figured that was why she was openly trying because it wasn’t unusual for men in our world to have mistresses. Her white shirt was almost see through and her skirt was so tight I wondered how she could possibly breathe in it. She was a beautiful girl, I wasn’t going to deny that but desperation had a way of making people look ugly. For starters, her red lipstick popped out too much against her pale skin and it made her look even more sickly.
I glanced over at Enzo who also wasn’t paying attention. He looked bored at best with his hand slung over my shoulder. We were practically matching in jeans and loose black shirts. Leo stood in front of us taking everything in with wide eyes.
“Can we get to the admission process?” I cut her off and she pressed her lips into a straight line. “If I wanted to know about the history of the school then I would have looked it up or would you prefer I found someone else to do that for us?”
To her credit, she was able to hide her displeasure under the mask of a cold smile. “Of course, please come in. I’ll take you to see the classes first and then you can see the principal.”
It was clear she was just doing it to spend some more time with Enzo and I wasn’t sure whether I was impressed or pissed off at the fact that he just ignored hr rather than told her off. I had to spend an extra fifteen minutes watching her try to flirt with my husband and cozy up to my son in the hopes that maybe he would give her the time of day. It was pathetic to say the least and I was getting increasingly frustrated by the sound of her voice and the smell of her perfume.
Once we were done with her, she led us to the principal’s office. I took one step in and was hit with a smell so strong that I stumbled back. Enzo’s arm was quick to wrap around my waist and he looked at me with concern.
“I think I’ll just wait outside,” I mumbled burying my face in his shirt to get a whiff of her cologne. “Something stinks in there and I’m going to throw up if I stay.”
His brows creased and I could tell he wasn’t happy about leaving me outside. I heard him say something to the guard following us but I barely made out the words. His stubble tickled my temple as he placed a lingering kiss there before stepping away.
The door shut behind him and Leo and I let out a sigh of relief. I took the bench close to the office and waited. I could feel the eyes of some of the students as they passed by. They all knew who I was and I could feel their burning curiosity and eagerness to ask questions.
“Aunt Izzy,” I looked up to see Roman shooting me a grin. He was able to return to school this session after Enzo pulled some strings. He had a lot of work to catch up on but he seemed happy.
“Hey, Roman,” I smiled back at him and he looked around to make sure no teacher was around before taking a seat next to me.
“Is Leo coming here?” he asked and I nodded. “That’s so cool, I can’t wait to introduce him to my friends. He is going to love it here.”
“I hope so,” I mumbled. “He’s in there right now with his dad. He should be resuming next session with you. You’ll be in the same class.”
He was grinning from ear to ear. He looked like he wanted to say more but the sound of clicking heels had him straightening. He said a quick goodbye before rushing off just as the same woman from before made her way over. I didn’t know her name and I hadn’t bothered to listen to it.
“Students aren’t allowed to lobby around and speak to visitors,” she said in her nasally voice as she took the seat next to me.
Her perfume was almost choking me so I stood up and moved to the next available one. I saw her lips curl in annoyance and if she was a nicer human being, I probably would have explained that I didn’t like her perfume but the truth was that I didn’t like her. I wanted nothing to do with her and I did not want her in my space.
“I am aware of that,” I said in response to her earlier statement. “There is no student here as you can see or are you seeing things.”
She smiled coldly. “Is there a problem, miss? You have been very cold to me since we got here when I have tried to be nothing but kind and professional. I am a teacher at the school and your son is going to be here. It is only right if we can be cordial with each other.”
Her faux niceness was a façade and it was one that I could clearly see through. I had enough of mean girls for a while so I simply turned away. Thankfully, I was saved from having to respond to her because the door opened and Enzo walked out with Leo. Leo was grinning from ear to ear and I could only imagine that things had gone just as expected.
“I’ll be starting soon,” he told me and I couldn’t stop my own smile.
The woman rushed to her feet while trying to smoothen out her outfit. “That is great news. I will give you my card in case you have any more questions.”
She handed it over to Enzo but he simply stared at it for a second before turning to me. “Give it to my wife.”
He walked away without another word and she frowned. I took the card from her but not before grabbing her wrist and pulling her close to me so I could whisper.
“First of all, it is Mrs. And if you ever try to hit on my husband again, I will make sure you never work in New York for the rest of your miserable life,” I pushed her back and she stumbled a little. “Have a good day.”
