Chapter 54 Chapter 54
Chapter 54 Chapter 54
Elara's POV
I woke with a gust of energy as happiness coasted through me.
Last night was daunting, but special.
Quickly, I rushed to have a shower and do my morning routine before heading out for breakfast. Matt was supposed to be out of town today. And hopefully, by the time I made my way downstairs, he was gone.
Besides some few meetings I had that morning with some team I had secretly put together to help dig up traces of Matt's money laundering crimes, with the help of Corian of course, I was excited to see Davis that morning and break the news to him.
Wearing a pair of chinos and a light silky blouse, I dug my feet into a ballet pump and clambered with a gait out of my room.
Standing by the banister, I glanced down to see if Davis was already down, but the hall seemed awfully quiet as I sauntered down.
“Beautiful morning, eh?”
My muscle tightening, I turned to see Matt safely ensconced In a corner in one of the upholstered chairs, a cup of coffee in one hand, and his phone in another.
“I guess.” I muttered with a frown.
Didn't he say he needed to go out of town today?
In fact, having suspected that he was currently operating a shady business deal with someone, Corian was certain we probably were going to catch him in the acts of his dubiousness.
“I thought you had business out of town.” I said, scanning the living room and beyond for traces of Davis.
“I think something more important came up and I had to reschedule.”
With a groan, I made a mental note to ask Corian to call off his guys as there was now a change in plans.
Lena breezed in to announce that breakfast was ready. Already, I had lost my appetite at the news that Matt's day of reckoning was going to be postponed.
While we went to the breakfast table and Matt pulled out a chair for me to sit, I couldn't help throwing a glance upstairs to see if Davis was somehow making his way down.
“Expecting someone?” Matt asked wryly.
Not sure how to respond since I wasn't sure they were aware about Davis' visit to the house. If I mentioned, it would raise a question of how I found out.
Was Davis sleeping in? I wondered.
“Lena tells me this morning that we might have some visitors in our house.” Matt said, his head bent as he slathered his bread with some tomato jam.
Holding in my breath, I managed to get out. “Visitors?”
“Like rodents…rats most likely.”
“Ah. I don't think that's possible especially in a house like this that has–”
“Elara,” Matt butted in.
I glanced up to meet his eyes. “Actually, one of the many reasons I postponed my meeting was so we could go house hunting. But now that this new issue has arisen, I think it is paramount we do. I won't allow you to stay in a rat infested house.” He gnarled, his eyes blinking almost furiously.
That was all I needed to know that there was more to his adamance than sheer disgust for rats.
Before I was bothered to return his statement, the living room door burst open. No sooner, we discovered who the intruder was.
Matt glanced up to meet his father's eyes as Davis walked into the breakfast room.
Feeling queasy, I looked up at Davis' hard expression as he came over to the table.
“You–”
“Good you're here, Pops. I was just telling Elara that we were moving out of your house.” Matt cut in before Davis could get out a word.
Blanching, I turned my gaze to Matt. “Unless I'm seriously mistaken, Matt. I believed I heard you say house hunting.”
“No difference, dear.” Matt smiled, taking a sip of his coffee as he squeezed my palms.
“When?” Davis asked gruffly.
“Today.” Matt answered.
My head swam, while Davis erupted in a thunderous laughter that got Matt raising his brows.
“Wait, you don't think I'm serious do you?” Matt drawled.
“The only serious thing will be going to prison.” Davis spat.
Matt's eyes instantly turned cold, as Davis called to an unknown person probably standing outside.
“Derek? Show them in.”
Soon, some men cladded in cop uniforms strolled in.
“Matt Trent? We need you in our domain to help clarify some issues that have been raised against you.” One of them said,
Scoffing, Matt rose to his feet. “Issue? What damn issue?” He roared defiantly as his eyes stared furiously at his father.
“You'll find out soon enough, if you'll come with us.”
“What's going on?” I inquired, looking to Davis for an explanation.
“We have evidence linking him to a recent fraudulent practice, as well as money laundering.”
“What?!” Matt roared. “You're lying.” He bristled, spittle flying all over as the men stepped forward to coerce him out away from the table.
In the far corner, Lena stood mouth agape.
“He's lying.” Matt pressed. “He wants to have my wife for himself that's why.”
“Matt, just go with them first.” I said, trying to ease the tension in the room.
“You bitch!” He shouted, hitting me across the face before anyone saw it coming. “You think I don't know you're fucking him!”
I swayed and staggered backwards from the weight of his slap.
Davis swung his fist in time to connect it with Matt's jaws before the cops could step in. “That's for hitting her.” He gnarled, while Matt groaned in pain.
“He broke my nose!” Matt cried as the cops led him out of the room.
Davis rushed over to me and held me tightly. “Are you alright?” He asked.
I nodded my head as the sting of tears made itself known. “It's my fault. I think I led him to think that he's gotten out of his crimes.” I whispered.
“No. What you did was to distract him.” Davis answered, drawing a chair close and helping me to sit in it.
