Chapter 85 I Am Surprised You Noticed
Chapter 85 I Am Surprised You Noticed
Cody
“Cody, wake the fuck up, right now.” An angry voice jolts me awake from sleep.
I groan at the noise around me. I'm feeling very hungover. “Keep your voice down," I mutter.
“No! Wake up right now.”
It takes me a moment, but I quickly realize the angry voice belongs to Jasmine. What's making her so upset? I take my time to sit up and look around, initially unsure of my location. It then clicks that I crashed at Carter’s last night. My gaze finally lands on Jasmine, who stands at the foot of the bed with her arms crossed. She’s glaring at me with furrowed brows and a flushed face.
"Jasmine, what the hell? Why are you yelling at me?”
“Really? You don’t know the answer? You never came home last night. You didn't call or text to tell me where you were. I thought you might be lying in a ditch or worse. I've been trying to find you for hours, calling and texting. I also tried reaching out to everyone I could think of, and no one answered until about twenty minutes ago. I've been driving around looking for you,” she hisses, her hands clenched at her sides.
“I’m surprised you even noticed. I don’t have to tell you everything I do. I’m not a child,” I snap back.
“Was this your way of punishing me for last night? Did you intentionally make me worry about you to get revenge? No, I don’t need to know everything you do. But I do need to know you're okay and not hurt. Anything could have happened to you, Cody.” Her voice still carries anger, but tears gather in her eyes.
I should have texted, but I am an adult at the end of the day. I was mad.
“As you can see, I am fine. You are losing your shit over nothing. I can do as I please. I am a grown-ass man. I was upset and wanted to blow off some steam. You are overreacting, and I am not going to apologize.”
Jasmine shakes her head, disappointed. “If you want to stay out all night, go ahead. If you want to throw a tantrum like a child, fine, but don’t bother coming home until you decide to grow up. I won't tolerate this anymore, especially this,” she yells, throwing an empty bag at me that still contains a little white powder, clearly indicating it’s drugs.
I freeze, glancing down at it. I don’t even remember taking it. Then again, I was completely wasted. “Jasmine, it isn’t what it seems.”
Jasmine scoffs. “Bullshit! I thought you were done with all this. I guess I was wrong. If you start this bad habit again, we are done. We aren’t in high school anymore. You should know better.”
Jasmine storms out and slams the door before I get a chance to speak. I'm unsure if I even took it, though I hope I didn’t. I promised long ago to stop, but I can’t be certain now. Jasmine has every right to be angry, but I doubt she genuinely meant it when she said we would be over. I messed up—I admit it. However, she also shares some responsibility for my irritability and anger, not the drugs, those were all me. I need to give her some space to cool down. With a bit of time, I believe everything will be okay.
I pick up my cell and see multiple missed calls, texts, and voicemails from Jasmine, starting at five in the morning. She wouldn’t have arrived home until about one or two, so she probably didn’t get much sleep. I go through her messages and listen to her voicemails, which range from anger to concern. I told her she was overreacting, but I should have just assured her I was okay and staying out—something that would have taken two seconds. Her frustration is understandable. I sigh, set the phone aside, and run my fingers through my hair.
A knock comes at the bedroom door. Part of me hopes it is Jasmine. I call for them to come in. Jasmine doesn’t walk in; Carter does.
“Is everything okay?” he asks, approaching the bed and placing a bottle of water and a mug of coffee beside me.
“No, not really. Jasmine hates me at the moment. I should have told her I was staying here, regardless of what happened between us last night.” I reply and take a sip of my coffee.
Carter sits on the bed. “I assumed you had informed her until I answered her call, and she was clearly panicked, searching for you. If I had known you didn’t tell her, I would have.”
I pick up the bag Jasmine tossed at me. “Did I take this last night? I don’t remember.”
Carter nods and confirms, “Yes, you took it with Silver and Toby.”
I shouldn’t have been with them last night, not after everything they’ve done. “Fuck! I don’t take this anymore. I promised Jasmine I wouldn’t. I don’t know what I was thinking. Did I do something else stupid I can’t remember that could possibly ruin my relationship?” I ask, tugging my hair in frustration.
“No, you took that and drank a lot, but nothing else. Are you and Jasmine going to be okay?”
“I really don’t know. I hope so. I need to give her a bit of time.”
“I'm confident you two will figure it out. Feel free to stay here as long as you need. Join us for breakfast when you're ready.”
I nod. “Thank you.”
He smiles and then leaves the bedroom, leaving me alone with my thoughts and regrets. I reach for my cell again, thinking about calling Jasmine, but I decide against it. It’s too soon. Jasmine probably wouldn’t answer anyway. I plan to go home later today.
I finish my coffee and get out of bed, quickly putting on my clothes. It’s been a while since I felt this rough. I really should think more carefully before acting. Jasmine didn’t deserve what I did, regardless of how angry I was last night. I worry my stubbornness and mistakes might have ruined everything. If that’s the case, I only have myself to blame.
