Chapter 124 Epilogue

Chapter 124 Epilogue
The house by the lake didn’t look as heavy anymore.
Cass noticed that the moment she stepped out of the car.
  Same peeling paint.
  Same quiet stretch of road.
Same still water in the distance.
But it didn’t pull at her chest the way it used to.
It didn’t feel like a place that held her hostage.
  Just… a place.
And that made all the difference.
“You sure about this?” Lena asked, hopping out behind her.
  Cass nodded.
  “Yeah.”
Lena looked at the house, then back at Cass.
“Okay. Just checking. Because last time we came here, things were… very intense.”
  Cass smiled slightly.
“That’s one way to put it.”
Jace closed the car door and walked around to her side.
He didn’t say anything at first.
Just stood next to her, shoulder brushing hers lightly.
  That hadn’t changed.
  They walked up together.
  No hesitation this time.
No fear of what was waiting inside.
Because nothing inside had power over her anymore.
  The door was unlocked.
  Cass pushed it open.
  The same quiet greeted them.
  Dust in the air.
Faint light slipping through the windows.
But it didn’t feel like it was watching her anymore.
  It felt… empty.
  Adrian wasn’t there.
Cass had known he wouldn’t be.
  Not really.
Some people didn’t stay in one place once everything was out.
  Lena glanced around.
“Well,” she said, hands on her hips, “he definitely didn’t leave a forwarding address.”
Cass let out a small breath.
  “I didn’t come for him.”
That made both Lena and Jace look at her.
Cass stepped further into the room.
  Slow.
  Deliberate.
Her eyes scanned the space one last time.
  Not searching.
  Just… acknowledging.
“I came to see if it still meant something,” she said.
  Jace frowned slightly.
  “And?”
  Cass thought about it.
  Really thought.
  Then shook her head.
  “No,” she said.
  That was it.
  No big speech.
  No dramatic release.
  Just a quiet truth.
  Lena nodded.
“Good,” she said. “Because this place has terrible energy.”
  Cass laughed softly.
  “Yeah.”
  She turned toward the door.
  Didn’t linger.
  Didn’t look back.
Because she didn’t need to anymore.
Outside, the sun was brighter than it had any right to be.
  The lake shimmered quietly.
  Unbothered.
  Unchanged.
  Cass paused for a second.
  Just to take it in.
Then felt Jace’s hand slip into hers.
  Natural.
  Easy.
Like it had become second nature.
  “You okay?” he asked.
  Cass nodded.
  “Yeah.”
  A pause.
  Then, softer—
  “I’m more than okay.”
  Lena stretched dramatically beside them.
“Well,” she said, “mystery solved, emotional trauma processed, questionable decisions survived…”
  She grinned.
  “I’d say we deserve food.”
  Cass smiled.
  “Definitely.”
They started walking back to the car.
  Not rushed.
  Not weighed down.
  Just… moving forward.
  Cass glanced back once.
  Not at the house.
  At the road.
The path they had taken to get here.
And for a second, she remembered everything.
  The confusion.
  The guilt.
The nights she thought she had broken something she couldn’t fix.
  Then she let it go.
  Not forcefully.
  Not painfully.
  Just… naturally.
Because it didn’t belong to her anymore.
  Jace squeezed her hand lightly.
  “Where to next?” he asked.
  Cass looked ahead.
  At the road stretching forward.
At everything that wasn’t tied to the past.
  And smiled.
  “Anywhere,” she said.
  And this time—
  she meant it.
