CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ONE: SHE IS BUSY.

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ONE: SHE IS BUSY.

~MIRA’S POV~

Nothing?

What the hell did she mean by that? I grabbed my wife’s shoulders.

“What happened to your face?”

“Nothing.”

“Mira,” I whispered in a warning.

She stepped away from me and walked on like it was normal for hercheeks to be swollen. My hand hitched in my hair. She was making this difficult for both of us. She stopped by the car and I rushed to open it. She got in without another word to me and my heart beat faster as I slipped inside.

I started the car but didn’t drive. None of us spoke a word to each other.

“Baby, what did I do?” I asked.

“Just take me home.”

The drive home was torturously silent. My mind was a hive of thoughts. I didn’t do anything wrong. If anyone should be mad, it was me. I did my best to keep my cool. Once we arrived home, Mira rushed upstairs. I carried her handbag and followed behind. She was pacing in the room when I came inside.

“You spoke to James,” was the first thing she said.

I nodded. “I did.”

Mira slapped a hand over her mouth, shaking her head when I tried to come close.

“He told you he had seen my mum twice. You didn’t tell me that.”

“I was going to tell you,” I murmured.

It hadn’t occurred to me to mention it. It didn’t even seem important as of this morning. James didn’t provide any useful information that could have helped.

“When?” She screamed.

I head jerked up.

“When were you going to tell me, huh? After he already told me?”

“No, baby. I was going to tell you…”

Her eyes told me to dare not lie to her so the words dried up in my mouth. To be honest, I wouldn’t have told her. I didn’t think it important for her to know.

“You know how much I wanted to see my mum and James told you about her and you didn’t even think to tell me.”

I raised my hands. She was blowing this out of proportion without giving me a chance to explain myself. I took a step forward and she took one back. Fuck. I wanted to hold and kiss her.

“Why would you keep something like that away from me?”

“I didn’t keep anything away from you,” I replied.

“So now I’m a liar? James is a liar?”

“I didn’t say that, Mira.”

“Then what are you saying? Did he or did he not tell you about seeing my mum?”

I opened my mouth to talk but she cut me off.

“I only want a yes or a no.”

My head hung low. “Yes.”

“Goodnight, Grey.”

The door of the bathroom slammed shut and I dragged my self to the chair in front of the vanity. A part of me felt that she wasn’t necessarily angry at me, I was just a means to release the heartache from yesterday’s events. And the other part of me was mad at her for not trusting me enough. All I had ever done was for her own good. Her happiness.

I was too tired to argue when she returned to the room. I didn’t say a word when she started pulling out pillows to create a barrier between us. I shrugged out of my shirt and crawled into bed.

The lights went off and I muttered, “Goodnight, Mira.” She said nothing but it didn’t deter him. “Baby, I know today was tough but don’t forget I love you.”

My words echoed in the dark. I smiled sadly to myself and tried to get some rest. Sleep didn’t come easy. It felt foreign to have those barriers in form of pillows between us but I didn’t remove it for fear of aggravating her.

“Mira,” I called out in the dark. “I’m sorry.”

No response. Pushing caution to the wind, I broke down the pillow barrier and hugged my wife from behind. She shivered in my embrace and I pulled the cover over our chests.

“Don’t be mad at your baby, Mira.”

Something warm and wet touched my arm. She shook again and I hugged her tight. She was crying. And I let her cry, comforting her silently with my presence.
It didn’t take long for me to fall asleep.

I woke up the next morning to an empty bed. Mira’s side of the bed was still warm. I let out a soft sigh as I searched the whole house only to find it empty. She left. This time, she left me a note to inform me about her whereabouts.

She was at work.

I squeezed the note and tossed it into the trash can. She was being childish right now. She had no reason to be at work this early. She was avoiding me. After a quick bath and change of clothes, I entered the kitchen.

Breakfast was already served. I ate alone but I didn’t eat much. It felt wrong eating without my wife. I dialled her number but she didn’t pick. My texts also went unreplied. Yeah, it was confirmed. She was still mad at me. And for what? For not telling her about a conversation I had with James yesterday.

Laughing at myself, at the absurdity of the whole situation, I finished my meal and left for the office.

Bethel was the first person I saw once I walked into the building. She looked worried and that worried me. We entered the elevator together.

“You got a delivery,” she said, waving an envelope.

I gave her a look. “Well, what does it say?”

“Umm… I think you should read it yourself.”

Bethel avoided my gaze as she said that. I snatched the envelope from her without opening it. I would read it when I was in a better state of mind.

“Have you seen my wife?” I asked

Bethel nodded. Her eyes showed her confusion but she didn’t ask him any questions.

“How’s she? What time did she get here?”

“She’s… she’s fine,” his assistant answered, looking even more confused.

“She was here by 6:45 am.”

The time was 7:15 am. So Mira ran off to the office to avoid him? That didn’t just sting, it hurt. We headed to my office and I dropped the envelope on my desk. Sitting on the edge of my desk, I crossed my legs at the ankles.

“What do I have this morning?”

Bethel brought out her tab. “You’re free till 10 am.”

I nodded in approval. Most of my mornings were always occupied, so I was glad to have this break.

“You have a meeting by 10 and it will last until 2 pm.”

“Okay. Is that all?”

She shook her head. “There’s another
meeting by 3 pm. To finalise the deal with Jeffrey.”

A smile touched my lips. I didn’t think I could get the business mogul to agree to sell his company at such an affordable rate but it meant more revenue for me and I was not one to back out of a good money making deal.

“That’s the last meeting for today.”

“Alright. Thanks.”

I walked around my desk and sank into my chair. Keeping a calm face, I said, “Bethel, please, get my wife. I need to see her immediately.”

“Okay, sir.”

The door shut behind my assistant and I buried myself in the details of the contract with Jeffrey. If today’s meeting ended well, I would be on my way to making billions.

A knock came from outside.

“Come in,” I said, expecting Mira to walk in.

She didn’t have to knock but I appreciated the courtesy. The door opened but it wasn’t Mira who walked in.

Bethel’s gaze lowered to her feet. I looked behind but there was no one. Mira had flaunted my orders.

“Sir, she’s busy at the moment but will be here later.”

“That’s what she said?” I asked.

“Yes, sir.”

I balled my fists. Bethel looked up and I masked my anger with a smile. “Can I go now, sir?”

“Sure.”

Once the door was closed, I grabbed the envelope. It took me a few seconds to open it. When I did, a letter and some pictures fell out. I picked the letter and the blood drained from my face.
