CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY: NOTHING.
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY: NOTHING.
~GREY’S POV~
I rushed downstairs in only my shorts and shirt flying open. I got into the car but didn’t start it. A heavy sigh left me. For such a powerful man, I had no idea what to do.
Who could I call?
Neil.
I could call Neil.
Relief flooded me as the thought took form. I dialled my friend’s number and Neil picked immediately.
“Hey, Neil. I’m so sorry to bother you,” I said into the phone.
My friend might have been in bed but I needed his help. Neil grunted something in reply and I chuckled.
“What’s up?”
That was the hard part. I didn’t know. My hand closed around the steering wheel.
“I’m just going to be honest with you. I don’t know where my wife is.”
“Where was she last seen?”
“With her best friend,” I answered. “But she doesn’t know where she is. I think she’s missing.”
“You can’t file a missing person’s report until twenty-four hours later.” I hummed in response. I knew that but it could be too late if we waited. “Have you tried to check for her at the nearest police station?”
Despite the situation, I laughed. What the fuck? She had no reason to be in the police station.
“I’m serious, Grey. People wind up in police stations for different reasons.” I muttered a noncommittal reply for Neil to keep going. “I’ll have my guys check.”
“Alright. Thanks.”
For the next few minutes, I was alone with my thoughts again. Could she really be in the police station? But why would she be there? I rested my head on the chair and the next time I woke up was to the blaring ringtone of my phone.
The rest of the sleep cleared from my eyes. Neil. I swiped up.
“Yes? Any update? Have you found her?”
“Yeah.”
My chest deflated with relief. I rubbed the back of my palm against my eyes. Finally.
“She was arrested. Your wife has a track record of getting arrested. You need to check that.”
I laughed because I had nothing to say to that. “There was an altercation with a James Rivera. I wanted to teach her a lesson.”
My spine stiffened. “James Rivera, CEO of Contra Tech?”
“Yeah, that one. You know him?”
“Unfortunately.” my hand ran over my face and I sighed again. This night was taking too much of a toll on me. “Thanks, Neil. For everything. I need the address.”
“You should receive it soon. Let them know I sent you. But I’ll also give their captain a call.”
“Thanks, man.”
“It’s all good. Just ask your wife to be careful.”
We exchanged farewell and my fingers sank into my scalp. What did Mira get herself into? How did James Rivera get into this? I input the address Neil sent into my GPS and the automated voice of a female came on.
The place wasn’t far from the house so I got there immediately. Before I stepped out of the car, I gave myself a pep talk. No just jacket in this what she did, I couldn’t get mad at Mira. She must have had her reason. The hospital’s visitation could have broken her and the little I could do now was comfort her. We would revisit this issue with James when she was okay.
I exited the car and crossed the distance to the police station. It was a few minutes past midnight so the place wasn’t buzzing with activity. There was only one officer on duty.
The man shot to his feet once I stepped in. My face looked like I had been sleeping but I didn’t comment on that. My biggest priority was my wife.
“Hi. Good morning, officer.” The man smiled and I took it as a sign to go on. “Neil Adamson asked me to come here. He must have called your captain. I’m here for my wife, Mira.”
The man’s eyes bulged in recognition but I brought out my phone to show him a picture of my wife so there would be no confusion.
“Mira Evans Anderson. She was brought here earlier yesterday.”
“Oh.” The man stood straighter. “I can’t… I can’t let her go.”
I arched a brow and the man shifted on his feet. The officer had to be a rookie. He was too nervous.
“I’m sorry sir.”
“Are you disobeying direct orders from your superior? I hope you’re getting paid handsomely for this.”
The man gulped audibly but made no move to leave. It irritated me.
“Do you know who you arrested? My wife!” my face grew red with fury. I wasn’t one to flaunt my powers but by God, I would bring down this station if that was what it took. If civility wouldn’t work, maybe madness would. “Get me my wife. Now.”
A string of apologies left the man’s lips and he shuffled out of my sight. I took those minutes alone to calm down. This officer was under James’ payroll or I wouldn’t be acting this way. I glared at the walls. The television was on but I couldn’t hear a word. The only thing I could think of was my wife. I needed to see her, touch her. To know she was okay.
The sound of footfalls made my gaze snap from the officer’s desk. I turned around and the breath left my lungs. I was beside Mira in a heartbeat. My face was swollen, especially my cheeks. Someone hit her.
I hijacked the officer by his collar, I squeezed so hard the man’s face turned blue. The man struggled to free himself but it fuelled me to tighten my grip.
“What the fuck did you do to my wife?”
“He didn’t do anything,” Mira said from behind him.
I shoved the man to the floor, not caring for the charges that could be filed against me for harassing an officer of the law. I walked ahead of him. She crouched to the man’s level and helped him up. She said something that made the man nod, he looked to me and offered me an understanding smile.
“I’m sorry,” I heard myself say.
The officer only gave me a curt nod and disappeared somewhere to return later with Mira's bag. I collected it with a small repentant smile. She walked back to me, I reached for her hand but she hid them behind her. My aching heart hurt at the rejection.
“Mira.” But she was already walking out of the station.
I walked faster to meet her pace. We were outside when I finally caught up to her.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
