Chapter 4 - Sharing Each Other
During the trip, Vernon glanced to his side, where Serena was driving the car. For some reason, he suddenly felt regretful for agreeing to Serena's invitation which was just a joke. Unfortunately, Vernon didn't know why he had to agree to Serena's invitation other than because he wanted to clear his mind too. Because he only thought about the invitation and did it just like that. Moreover, this was their first time meeting, but he felt something different from her.
Vernon thought that he who had just broken up with his long-time girlfriend, should not be traveling with a strange woman even though she was a celebrity. Because to him, this was something that could not respect his ex-girlfriend or other women.
Just as Vernon was thinking that he should quit the trip, his cell phone suddenly rang, making him take it out of his pants pocket and Serena also gave it a quick glance.
It was Cherry who had suddenly called him. Vernon answered the call because he thought something had happened to Cherry. At least that's what came to his mind considering Cherry was alone even though Vernon had made sure her driver would pick her up.
"What?!" asked Vernon, as an opening greeting.
"Listen, Vernon ... if you still have feelings for me and want to come back to me, I'll accept you. If you want to apologize too and appear before me, I will forgive you," said Cherry.
Vernon massaged the bridge of his nose and sighed in annoyance. Apparently, he chose the right path by breaking her off. Because of her still commanding and demanding tone, Cherry didn't even feel guilty at all, or at least felt that it was because of that that she had asked him to break up.
"Stop talking like I did you wrong! We're done for good! Bye!" Vernon immediately ended the call while letting out a long sigh.
Seeing the situation that had just happened to the man next to her, especially since she had also heard Vernon's conversation, Serena was sure that the woman was Cherry, whom they had left alone on the side of the road. She had guessed that the woman was Vernon's girlfriend, whom they had just broken up with.
"Would you like to share with me about your relationship problem with her?" asked Serena, opening the conversation. She intended to allow Vernon to pour out his problems to her if he wanted to. "I'm sorry if my question offended you. I mean, if you want to."
Vernon remained silent without answering Serena's question. He was still thinking about whether it was right to tell Serena about him or not, because after all they had only known each other that day for a matter of hours.
"That was Cherry, she and I had just broken up today before you found us by the side of the road," replied Vernon who finally talked about him and Cherry in outline. "She was too capricious and I didn't know her well enough to go back."
Serena nodded her head and laughed at Cherry's part of the story which was described as childish based on Vernon's story. Not only that, she herself saw how childish Cherry was earlier when Serena intended to help them.
"What's so funny? Why are you laughing?"
Serena shook her head and said nothing. She tried to stop her giggle because she knew it was rude to continue in front of someone who had just broken up with his girlfriend, especially since he was starting to open up to her.
After driving for a long time and they also didn't discuss anything, Vernon looked at Serena who seemed to be seriously driving but enjoying the air around her.
"What? Do you have something to say?" Serena asked, feeling noticed by him.
"I think I should drive," Vernon replied.
"Hmm, it’s a good idea."
Serena pulled the car over while Vernon got out of the car and Serena moved to Vernon's side so she didn't have to bother getting out of the car. After switching seats, Vernon looked more professional driving the car so carefully. He looked much more relaxed plus his appearance was so favorable that Serena couldn't stop thinking about him.
"By the way, why are you traveling alone to the West? I mean, I know you want to clear your head, but where's your best friend or someone maybe? Wouldn't it be nice to go with a best friend or someone you know to keep you company?" asked Vernon, when he had the chance to speak.
Serena laughed at the sound of 'best friend' in her ears. "My best friend is too busy having sex with my fiancé and does not have time to go with them to the West," Serena replied sarcastically. "She's no longer my best friend anyway, and the man … he's no longer my fiancé or my boyfriend. There's no turning back for those who betray me behind my back," Serena added in a fiery, exasperated tone.
Vernon didn't expect that Serena's answer would be as complicated as he was but it was so painful if he was in her position. Finally, Vernon chose to remain silent and look for a new topic.
"Why did you invite me to come along with you, Serena?" asked Vernon, giving her a quick glance. "I don't think you should invite a man with you, let alone a stranger to be in the same car with you. You should feel scared if a stranger is with you."
Serena looked at him with a smile, but before she could answer, her cell phone rang, just as Vernon was getting a call too. Serena stared at her cell phone for a moment and she hung up the call impatiently. Unfortunately, the person kept calling her and it made her feel so annoyed.
"Would you like me to pick up the call if you don't mind?" asked Vernon, wanting to help her.
Serena sighed and handed her phone to Vernon. She looked at him and said, "Listen, if he claims that he is my boyfriend, you should tell him that you are my new boyfriend."
