Chapter 55 The Monster Who Hesitated

Chapter 55 The Monster Who Hesitated
Seraphine walked forward through the blood-soaked battlefield, her white-gold robes stained with ash and gore. Her staff glowed with unstable holy light, golden radiance fractured by pulsing silver threads. Around her, the fighting slowed as both sides sensed the impossible tension in the air.

Darius stood ten paces away, black necrotic armor cracked and leaking dark energy. Seraphine’s Light burned him severely. Every step she took closer sent fresh waves of agony through his body, weakening his connection to every thrall under his command. His army stood motionless behind him, waiting for an order that did not come.

She stopped. Their eyes met, glowing green sockets against silver ones.

“Why did you protect me?” Seraphine asked, her voice trembling. “You had the perfect chance to kill me. Why hesitate?”

Darius’s claws flexed at his sides. Pain radiated from every inch of his frame, but he forced himself to remain standing. “Because when I look at you, I see her. Elyra. I remember fragments now. Her laughter. Her voice. The way she looked at me like I was worth saving. It makes me… hesitate. Even though every part of me knows I should end this.”

Seraphine’s staff shook in her grip. “I was sent here to destroy you. The Order says you are an abomination that must be purged from the world. But every time I try to strike, something inside me screams not to. Because she loved you. And some part of me… still does.”

The war around them continued in scattered pockets, steel clashing, men screaming, but the center of the battlefield belonged only to them. Neither side dared interrupt.

Darius took a painful step closer, dark energy leaking from his wounds. “I remember more every time I see you. She was taken alive. They dragged her away while I lay dying. And now you carry her inside you. Tell me the truth, Seraphine. Are you her? Or are you just wearing her face?”

Seraphine’s eyes filled with tears. “I don’t know anymore. The Order stole her soul and forced it into me. They erased who I was supposed to be. I was never a chosen saint. I was a vessel. A weapon designed to hunt you.”

Darius’s glowing sockets dimmed with raw pain. “Then we are both broken by them. Both remade into something we never chose to be.”

Seraphine raised her staff slightly, holy light gathering at the tip. She could end this now. One strike and the Hollow King would fall. But her hand refused to move. The resonance between them was too strong. The love that had survived death itself held her back.

“I can’t do it,” she whispered. “Even though everything I was taught tells me to destroy you… I can’t.”

Darius stood before her, barely able to remain upright under the weight of her Light. “Then don’t. Stay with me. Help me end them. We were torn apart once. We don’t have to be enemies again.”

Behind Seraphine, hidden among the templars, Grand Inquisitor Malrec prepared a holy spear. The weapon glowed with purifying light, aimed directly at her back. His eyes were cold and calculating. He would not allow the vessel to be compromised any further.

Darius saw it first.

His glowing sockets widened in alarm. “Seraphine! Behind you!”

Seraphine turned just as Malrec hurled the spear with deadly precision. The holy weapon streaked toward her back, meant to pierce through her heart and purify any trace of Elyra’s soul.

Darius moved without thinking. He lunged forward, black mist exploding around him, and shoved Seraphine aside with all his remaining strength. The spear struck him instead, burying deep into his shoulder with a burst of holy fire.

Darius roared in agony as the purifying light burned through his necrotic armor and bone. He dropped to one knee, dark energy pouring from the wound like blood.

Seraphine caught him as he fell, her arms wrapping around his armored form for the first time. For one brief, impossible moment, Light and Dark touched without violence.

Malrec’s voice rang out across the battlefield. “Traitor! The Saint has been corrupted by the abomination!”

The war surged back to full fury around them.

But in the center of the storm, Seraphine held the Hollow King, tears falling as she whispered his name.

“Darius…”

And for the first time since rising from death, the monster who hesitated held her back.
