Chapter 54 Siege of Black Hollowe

Chapter 54 Siege of Black Hollowe
The horns of war echoed across the valley as royal forces crashed against the hidden stronghold of Black Hollow.

Thousands of Crown soldiers in gleaming armor poured over the ridges, holy banners snapping in the wind. Siege engines rolled forward, priests chanting protective rites. This was no mere patrol. This was the beginning of the purge made real.

Darius stood on the battlements, black necrotic armor gleaming under the gray sky. His glowing green sockets burned with cold fury. Behind him, his undead legions waited in perfect silence, thousands strong, banners of the hollow crown fluttering above them.

“They dare attack my territory,” Darius growled. “Then they will feed it.”

Ossian stood at his side. “Show them what the Hollow King has become.”

Darius raised one clawed hand. The ground trembled.

From the earth around the advancing royal army, the dead answered his call. Fresh corpses from previous battles and ancient bones buried beneath the valley erupted upward in massive waves. Entire battalions of Crown soldiers were swallowed as the ground split open, skeletal hands dragging screaming men down into the dirt. Undead rose from the graves, turning on their former allies with relentless hunger.

Darius leaped from the battlements, landing in the heart of the enemy formation like a meteor of bone and shadow. His new abilities surged through him. With a sweep of his arm, a wave of necrotic energy rippled outward, resurrecting fallen soldiers instantly as thralls under his command. Entire companies of the Crown’s army were turned against their brothers in seconds.

He tore through knights like paper. His claws ripped through holy armor as if it were cloth. Black mist exploded from him in thick clouds, weakening the living and strengthening the dead. A battalion of heavy infantry charged him. Darius slammed his fists into the ground. The earth split. A chasm opened beneath them, filled with resurrected corpses that pulled the soldiers down screaming.

Rhen fought beside him, blade flashing. “You’re moving differently, Commander. Faster. Stronger. But your eyes… they’re getting colder.”

Darius didn’t answer. He felt it, each use of power stripping away another piece of his humanity. The screams of dying men no longer stirred pity. The sight of blood barely registered. Only the cold satisfaction of conquest remained.

Vael smashed through a line of templars, his massive axe a blur of death. Ossian directed the rear forces with ancient precision, turning the battle into a calculated slaughter.

The royal commander shouted desperately from the back lines. “Hold formation! The Saint is coming! The Light will purify them!”

But it was too late. Darius’s undead army overwhelmed them. Waves of resurrected corpses swallowed entire companies. The pass ran red as the Hollow King’s forces dismantled the invasion force with terrifying efficiency.

Darius stood atop a pile of corpses, black mist swirling violently around him. His armor had grown thicker during the battle, new bone plates fusing directly to his skeleton. He felt stronger. More powerful. But something inside him grew quieter with every life he took. The last warm fragments of Darius Voss were fading.

Rhen approached, covered in blood. “We’ve broken them. They’re retreating. But Commander… you smiled when you raised that last battalion. You actually smiled.”

Darius turned slowly. His glowing sockets were dimmer, colder. “Good. Let them fear the smile of the Hollow King.”

Then the air changed.

A brilliant wave of holy light crested the far ridge. Seraphine arrived at the head of a reinforcement column, her white-gold robes glowing like a second sun. Her staff blazed with radiant power. The moment her Light touched the battlefield, Darius’s entire undead army froze in place.

Thralls stopped mid-swing. Newly raised corpses collapsed where they stood. The waves of resurrected dead fell still as her holy presence washed over them.

Darius staggered, pain ripping through him as the resonance struck. But he did not look away. His glowing green sockets locked onto her across the battlefield, the same desperate recognition burning in them as before.

Seraphine stood at the head of her forces, silver light flickering wildly within her golden aura. She stared back at him, staff trembling in her hands. The battle had come to a sudden, unnerving halt.

Neither side moved.

The Hollow King and the Saint faced each other across a field of the dead, the war between them momentarily silenced by the impossible connection that bound their souls.

Rhen gripped his sword tighter. “Commander… she’s here.”

Darius took one painful step forward, black mist clashing violently against her radiant light. The agony was immense, but he could not stop himself.

“Elyra…” he whispered, the name carrying across the battlefield like a prayer and a curse.

Seraphine’s lips moved, but no sound came. Her silver eyes shimmered with the same storm of emotions.

The war had found its true battlefield.

And it stood between them.
