Chapter 47 The Dead Remember

Chapter 47 The Dead Remember
Darius sat on the black throne, the weight of Ashfeld Threshold pressing against his mind like a second skin. The rescued children had been given quarters in the upper levels, far from the main barracks of the thralls. Yet their presence rippled through the entire fortress.

One by one, they began to change.

A small girl no older than seven approached him in the central hall while he inspected new arrivals. Her eyes, once filled with fear, now carried an eerie calm. She looked up at him and spoke in a voice that was not entirely her own.

“She laughed when you tried to dance at the wedding… you stepped on her feet three times.”

Darius froze. The words hit him like a blade through the chest. He remembered nothing of a wedding dance, but the image flashed, Elyra’s bright laughter, her teasing smile as he awkwardly tried to lead.

Before he could respond, another child, a boy with brands fading on his arms, tugged at his cloak. “She was scared… when the inquisitors came. She kept saying your name. Over and over. Darius… Darius… don’t let them take me.”

The collective whispers of the dead in the fortress grew louder in Darius’s mind. Among the usual hunger and obedience, a new voice threaded through, soft, feminine, filled with both love and terror.

\[“Darius…”\]

He staggered back a step, claws scraping against the stone floor. Rhen appeared at his side instantly.

“Commander? What is it?”

“They’re carrying pieces of her,” Darius rasped. “The children. The dead. All of them. Fragments of Elyra are leaking through.”

Ossian watched from the shadows, arms crossed. “The resonance is spreading. Your connection to the priestess is awakening echoes across every soul bound to you. This is dangerous, my King. The dead should not remember what was never theirs.”

But the voices continued.

A young boy sitting against the wall suddenly looked up with silver-tinged eyes. “She fought them… when they dragged her away. She screamed that you were still alive. That you would come for her.”

Darius dropped to one knee in front of the boy, his massive frame trembling. “Tell me more. Please.”

The boy smiled weakly, a smile that did not belong to a child. “She loved you. Even when they broke her. Even when they tore her apart and put the pieces inside others. She never stopped loving you.”

The whispers in Darius’s mind grew into a chorus. Hundreds of thralls across the fortress began murmuring the same thing in unison, soft, feminine echoes layered beneath their usual silence.

\[“Darius… find me…”\]

\[“I’m still here…”\]

\[“Don’t forget me…”\]

He clutched his head, bone plating creaking as new growths pushed against his skull. The emotions flooding him were too human. Too warm. Too painful. For the first time since his rebirth, the cold detachment of the Hollow King cracked wide open.

Rhen knelt beside him. “Commander, you’re shaking. We need to stop this. The children… they’re affecting you too much.”

“I can’t stop it,” Darius whispered. “She’s everywhere now. In them. In me. In the priestess. The Order didn’t just kill her. They scattered her across half the kingdom.”

That night, Darius sat alone on the black throne, the fortress quiet around him. He tried to rest, to regain control over his fracturing power. The throne amplified his connection to every soul bound to Ashfeld Threshold.

And then it came.

A single, crystal-clear memory surfaced for the first time.

Elyra, alive and bleeding, being dragged away from the battlefield by holy inquisitors in white and gold robes. She fought desperately, nails raking across one man’s face, screaming his name into the night.

“Darius! They lied! I’m still alive! Darius!”

Her voice echoed through the throne room as if she stood right in front of him. Darius gripped the arms of the throne until the stone cracked. The memory played in vivid detail, the fear in her eyes, the blood on her torn dress, the way she reached back toward the pile of corpses where he lay dying.

“I’ll find you again!” she screamed as they forced her into a sealed carriage. “I swear it!”

The vision ended abruptly.

Darius remained seated on the black throne, dark energy leaking from his sockets like tears. His body trembled with emotions he could no longer suppress.

Elyra had been alive.

She had fought for him.

And the Order had taken her anyway.

Somewhere far away, in the Radiant Veil Cathedral, Seraphine woke from her own tormented sleep, whispering the same name into the darkness.

The resonance between them was no longer a distant echo.

It was becoming a scream.
