Chapter 46 Subject S-1
Chapter 46 Subject S-1
Seraphine sat on the cold stone floor of the forbidden catacomb, surrounded by scattered documents and the dying light of her candle. Her hands shook as she opened the thick folder labeled \[SUBJECT S-1: ELYRA RECLAMATION PROJECT\].
The first page nearly made her sick.
\[Elyra Voss – Captured alive three days after the Blackridge Massacre. Subject displayed unusual resilience. Soul core extracted and fractured over fourteen ritual sessions for compatibility testing.\]
Seraphine’s breath caught. Elyra had survived. She had lived after the battle. The Order had taken her while she was still breathing.
She forced herself to keep reading.
\[Fragmentation Process: Soul divided into seven primary shards to reduce resistance. Primary shard (Memory & Emotional Core) designated for Vessel S-17 implantation.\]
\[Vessel Profile: Seraphine Veyl – Orphaned infant selected for high spiritual affinity. Body prepared through early conditioning rituals. Identity implantation began at age three.\]
Seraphine pressed a hand to her mouth, tears spilling down her cheeks. She had never been an orphan found by the Order. She had been chosen. Prepared. Grown like a vessel in a lab.
The next pages were worse.
Detailed logs of the binding process. How they had suppressed her original personality. How they had implanted faith, loyalty, and holy affinity using Elyra’s fractured soul. There were notes about “residual bleed”, moments when Elyra’s memories and emotions broke through the conditioning.
\[Subject shows occasional silver resonance during prayer. Memory flashes of battlefield and lost husband recorded. Recommended increase in suppression runes.\]
Seraphine crawled desperately through more documents, searching for anything that could prove this was a lie. A forgery. A test of her faith. She found only more proof.
Medical records of her own body from childhood. Soul compatibility charts showing near-perfect alignment with Elyra Voss. Progress reports celebrating how well “the vessel” was developing into the perfect High Priestess.
She was never chosen by the Radiant Veil.
She was engineered by the Order.
A stolen soul forced into a stolen body.
A broken sob tore from her throat as she read the final section of the main report.
\[Current Status: Vessel S-17 (Seraphine) remains stable. Primary Elyra shard shows increasing activity after contact with Target: Darius Voss (Hollow King). Risk of full reclamation rising. Recommend immediate intervention if resonance exceeds 40%.\]
Seraphine dropped the papers. They scattered across the floor like dead leaves. She hugged her knees to her chest, rocking back and forth in the dim light.
“I was never real…” she whispered. “Everything I believed… every prayer, every blessing, every time I felt the Light… it was never mine. It was hers. They put her inside me and told me I was holy.”
She desperately searched through the remaining files, tearing open scrolls and flipping through ledgers, looking for any contradiction. Anything that could tell her this was false. That she was truly Seraphine Veyl, chosen saint of the Radiant Veil.
There was nothing.
Only cold, clinical records of how they had broken Elyra’s soul and rebuilt it inside her.
At the very bottom of the final page, beneath rows of technical notes and suppression schedules, was a single line written in elegant red wax seal:
\[Authorized by King Aureth himself.\]
Seraphine stared at the royal signature, the candlelight making the red wax look like fresh blood.
The king had personally approved her creation. The same king who had ordered Darius’s execution. The same king who had destroyed both their lives so the Order could create the perfect weapon.
She was not a saint.
She was Subject S-1.
A vessel designed from the very beginning to hunt and destroy the man whose wife they had murdered and stolen.
Seraphine curled into herself on the cold floor, surrounded by the evidence of her false life. The silver light in her hands pulsed erratically, as if Elyra herself was screaming to be heard.
She whispered into the darkness, voice raw and broken:
“What am I supposed to be now?”
No answer came.
Only the heavy silence of the catacombs and the terrifying truth that everything she had ever known was built on a stolen soul.
And the man she had been ordered to kill was the only one who could help her remember who she really was.
