Chapter 234
Chapter 234
Stella's POV
The dark tendrils coil tighter, forming a dome of pulsating obsidian energy that traps us like insects in amber. Each tendril throbs with a sickly purple glow, laced with threads of silver nanites that crawl like maggots across the ritual's surface.
Damon's scepter splits the sky above, its tip vomiting a stream of metallic particles that spiral upward to form a sigil of twisting, barbed metal—a grotesque perversion of the Goddess's crescent moon. The air inside the dome hums with a frequency that rattles my bones, making the cub in my arms whimper and clutch at my tunic with tiny, trembling fists.
Kai's hand is scorching in mine, his palm slick with a mix of blood and sweat, but he doesn't let go. I feel his alpha strength surging through our joined hands, a desperate attempt to anchor me as the ritual saps my energy.
The cub's storm magic flickers around his fingers in weak sparks, only to be greedily sucked into the vortex of the ritual, each tendril pulsing brighter as it feasts on our power.
"Feel it!" Damon's voice booms inside the dome, reverberating off the obsidian walls. His armor has melted into a liquid silver cloak that ripples like a living thing, every movement sending off showers of sparks.
"The power of gods coursing through my veins! Your storm blood, his primal alpha strength—even the cub's endless wellspring of magic! All mine to command, all mine to wield!"
A violent shudder racks my body as energy is torn from my core. The edelweiss shards embedded in my armor dim to a faint glow, their healing light being drained into the intricate ritual lines etched into the ice below.
My knees buckle, and I would have fallen if not for Kai's iron grip. He growls deep in his throat, swinging his sword at the nearest tendril, but the blade passes through the energy like a ghost, leaving no mark. "Stop this madness, Damon! You're tearing yourself apart from the inside out!"
"Foolish alpha," Damon laughs, his form shimmering like a heat mirage. He raises a hand, and without warning, a mountain ridge to the north explodes in a shower of snow and rock. The blast wave hits the dome, making it ripple like water, but Damon stands unflinching. "This is divinity incarnate! The Council failed because they feared true power—me? I embrace it like a lover!"
His eyes roll back in his head, silver veins spiderwebbing up his neck and across his cheeks. "I see the Goddess's realm now... the stars bow to my will, the very ice trembles at my—"
He cuts off with a strangled gasp, his body going rigid. The cub suddenly arches in my arms, a piercing wail escaping his lips as storm magic bursts from his tiny body in a brilliant green nova. But instead of harming us, the magic flows into the ritual, feeding the sigil until it glows so brightly I have to shield my eyes. Damon's silver cloak spasms, nanites forming and dissolving in a frantic, chaotic dance.
"Too much..." he mutters, clutching his head with both hands. "The child's power—it's a never-ending torrent! I can't control it!"
I feel it too—the cub's magic regenerates as swiftly as the ritual steals it, like a mighty river that replenishes itself no matter how much is taken. Damon staggers like a drunkard, his body twitching uncontrollably. The liquid silver cloak hardens into a cage, pinning his arms to his sides as the excess magic courses through him.
"No... I am the master here! I command this power! I am the god they all must kneel before!"
Kai yanks me behind his massive frame, using his body as a shield against the surging energy. The ice beneath the dome splits open, spewing forth green flames that lick at the obsidian walls. Damon's scream tears through the air—a raw, animalistic sound not of triumph, but of pure, unadulterated terror.
His flesh begins to bubble and blister, nanites working overtime to repair the damage, but the raw magic is too much, too wild.
"STOP! FOR THE LOVE OF THE GODDESS, STOP THE RITUAL!" he howls, smashing the scepter against the ice with all his might.
The sigil wavers, its edges flickering, but it holds firm, fueled by the cub's relentless stream of power. Damon's face melts like wax, revealing the white of his skull beneath, only for the nanites to rebuild it in a misshapen, monstrous mask. "I didn't mean it! I swear! Goddess, hear my plea—forgive me!"
He collapses to his knees, silver blood—more machine than life—pooling around him on the ice. The dome begins to shudder and collapse, tendrils whipping wildly in all directions.
Kai seizes my hand, his voice urgent in my ear: "Now, Stella! We have to run—NOW!"
We stumble across the cracked ice, our boots slipping on the blood-slick surface, but I can't tear my eyes away. Damon is a writhing mass of metal and flesh, his body caught in a never-ending cycle of destruction and regeneration. His eyes, now two burning holes in his melting face, lock onto the sky above.
"I'M SORRY!" he wails, his voice a broken sob. "I WAS WRONG! I SEE THAT NOW! LET ME LIVE—PLEASE, GODDESS, HAVE MERCY ON ME!"
