Chapter 159 WE'RE GOING TO BE ON LOCKDOWN
CHAPTER 159

EMBER

I lifted my head and looked straight at Kael. My body ached everywhere and my voice came out shaky. “I’m sorry,” I told him. “The people needed help and we couldn’t just fly away.”

“Ember, they won’t care if you kill yourself in the process trying to save everyone. Besides, you’re not even a trained mage yet. How do you propose you want to help them?” A voice said behind me.

I turned around quickly to meet Ragnar. He was coated with thick black blood that smelled sharp and metallic. It covered his arms and chest. His hair looked rough and messy, sticking out in different directions, and his wings were snapped out wider than I had ever seen them. The sight made my stomach twist.

“I know,” I said, my throat tight with frustration. “But we just needed to try at least to get the other Year One students to the bus.”

Kael spoke up, his tone heavy. “The professors and the Year Three students are working to get the Year One and Year Two students to the bus. There are also other powerful mage officials here so it’s not your calling to fight for the people.”

Ragnar stepped closer, his face serious and tired. “Kael will take you back to the academy now as the visions are shifting and your fate was you’d never survive this fight or one of the shadow monsters would get you.”

I felt a cold wave of fear wash over me.

Kael groaned behind me, the sound low and frustrated. “And that will never happen and so you need to stay on my back and not attempt anymore stupid rescue missions.”

I looked between both of them, my chest heavy. The seer’s words skipped into my mind again. Maybe this was her prediction coming to fulfillment. The thought made my hands shake.

I swallowed hard and asked, my voice small, “What about Lance, Magnus and Rowan?”

Ragnar cupped my face with both hands. His palms felt warm but sticky from the blood. “The males were trained Year Three students and a shadow monster wouldn’t take them easily.”

His voice stayed steady. “They’re helping the professor evacuate the first year students and you’d do them a lot of help if you get on Kael and return to the academy.”

I nodded slowly, the weight of everything pressing down on me. Part of me still wanted to run back into the chaos, but exhaustion and fear held me back. “Okay,” I told Kael.

He looked at me directly, his eyes intense. “You are going to create an air shield once I launched into the air and you should be on the lookout for any shadow monster.”

I nodded in response, my neck muscles sore. He grabbed my hands tightly. Pain shot through the fresh cuts.

I winced and yanked my hands away from his. “I’ve heard you asshole.”

He smiled, a quick flash across his face. He ran forward. His body shifted immediately and his dragon form emerged with a rush of power I felt in the air around us.

Ragnar grabbed my waist firmly and flew upward, dropping me onto Kael’s back. I tightened my hands around Kael’s neck, gripping the rough scales. He launched into the sky with a powerful surge that made my stomach drop.

I created the air shield around us right away, the magic humming through my tired arms. He flew fast, a cold wind whipping past my face.

Just as he said, shadow monsters suddenly raced after us. I turned around briefly, heart pounding hard. I worked on something I had never done before. I had never tried using the full extent of this power.

I yelled at Kael, straining my voice. “Let your walls down and power share with me!”

He grunted in response. A moment later his power danced at the bridge of mine. I let my walls down and his powers flooded me.

I moaned at the feel of it, the raw strength mixing with my own fire. It felt overwhelming.

I snapped my eyes open as the screech sounded above me. I began working hard, my concentration fixed completely on what I was creating.

I mixed the blend of my fire power and his shadow magic into creating a huge phoenix bird like the one Magnus did. I vividly remembered how I described it to him and was able to create one even though I didn’t know if I got the right shape.

I let it fly and suspended it in the air. I muttered a spell and it formed solid. It began roaring fire at the shadow monsters. I created a wall of fire and shadow around us as a shield and turned to grip his neck tighter.

“Go faster!” I yelled at him. “My creature would only hold for five minutes and the shield wouldn’t be strong enough and so we needed to get under the wards.”

He roared in response, the sound vibrating through his whole body into mine. He began diving faster. I turned to see my phoenix shape was seriously fighting with the monsters.

Drawing the last ounce of my power, I fueled the creature with more fire. The monsters screeched in pain loudly as they burnt to ash.

The phoenix let out a terrifying roar as the shadow monsters gathered around it, focused on destroying it. It burst into a huge fire tornado that burnt every one of them to ash.

I sighed in relief, my body shaking, as we crossed the school ward. He landed at the Ember courtyard, crashing into the earth hard. He shifted a moment later into his human form and we fell to the floor. I was on his naked body, his hands wrapped around my waist.

I lifted my head, embarrassment washing over me. “Well that wasn’t an awful ride.”

He chuckled, the sound low and rough. He turned us over so he’s straddling me. “I’ll take you on a proper dragon ride once we can leave the ward again because with what has happened Michael wouldn’t let any students out of the academy, most especially you.”
