Chapter 36 NAME OF THE DEAD PERSON
CHAPTER 36: NAME OF THE DEAD PERSON

The name Evelyn Voss sit on the summons board like a crack backward not open to front, but pull everything back to the past.

Raven stand still long enough for Kade to touch lightly her elbow.

“You okay?” he ask.

Raven nod one very small nod.

“Not bad,” she said. “Just… they just call someone who not here anymore.”

Inside the court, the air different from the forum. No voices overlap each other. No collective breathing. Only wood chairs, cold microphone, and questions designed to cut.

The prosecutor open the file.

“We need clarify the role of Evelyn Voss in the procedures called ‘stabilization’ and ‘release’,” he said. “Did or not she design”

“No,” Raven cut in, voice calm but firm. “She stop.”

The room sink down.

“You have evidence?” another prosecutor ask.

Raven put THE CORE OF SILENCE on the table not turn on.

“Yes,” she said. “But first, ask the right question.”

“What question?”

“Why her name appear now,” Raven reply. “And who put it in.”

One moment of silence then sound of paper rustling.

The first prosecutor breathe out.

“We received an internal record,” he said. “Proposal for ‘restructuring framework’ once quoted Mrs Voss warnings and turn them into technical precedent.”

Lucas grind his teeth.

“They take warning… make it tool,” he said.

“Right,” Raven reply. “They twist the meaning.”

She open THE CORE OF SILENCE first time in this room.

The sound echo not Evelyn’s tape, but chain of emails: time, receiver, edit each word.

“Here,” Raven said. “Original warning:

‘Not deploy when lack supervision.’
Edit one: ‘Deploy with supervision.’
Edit two: ‘Deploy when need supervision.’
Edit three: ‘Deploy to ensure safety.’”

She stop.

“Each word edit,” Raven said, “push responsibility far from the writer.”

Prosecutor nod slow.

“So Mrs Voss oppose?”

“She refuse to sign,” Raven reply. “And because of that… she get removed.”

“Removed how?” one person ask.

Raven look straight.

“Pushed to suburb. Cut resources. Burned house,” she said, voice not shake. “Not erase data. Erase person.”

One light tap of pen record it.

Break time.

Narrow hallway, white light. Raven lean against wall, close eyes one beat.

Lucas stand beside.

“You want play the tape?” he ask softly.

Raven shake head.

“Not yet,” she said. “Not for defense.”

“Then for what?” Lucas ask.

Raven open eyes.

“To mark the point,” she reply. “That there was one person said ‘no’ and what the price of ‘no’ is.”

Kade walk over, give her a piece of paper.

“Prosecutor request,” he said. “They want know… did she leave any instruction.”

Raven look at the blank paper.

“Yes,” Raven said. “But not for them.”
The hearing continue.

Raven stand up not sit.

“Name of my mother,” she said, “not the key to lock the case. It is the boundary.”

“Boundary?” prosecutor ask.

“Between warning and order,” Raven reply. “Between writer and editor. Between no and allowed.”

She look straight at the opposite seats.

“If you want use her name,” Raven said, “use it right way: as witness who opposed.”

Silence then nod.

“Proposal recorded,” prosecutor said. “Evelyn Voss witness who opposed.”

One line added to the minutes.

Raven breathe out slow.

Outside the court, afternoon come down.

The crowd still stand less than morning, but more solid. When Raven walk out, no one clap. No one chant.

Only one space kept empty.

Kade open car door.

“You just bring your mother back,” he said.

Raven look at the pale gray sky.

“No,” she reply. “I just give her back… the right position.”

Device vibrate new message from prosecutor.

“REQUEST SUBMIT PERSONAL AUDIO RECORDING – APPENDIX.”

Raven look at the metal box in her bag Evelyn’s tape.

She text back one line:

“ONLY PLAY BEFORE WITNESSES.”

One beat.

“AGREED.”

Raven nod.

“Tomorrow,” she said to the whole group. “Not to convict.”

Lucas understand.

“To remember.”

Raven open car door, sit in.

“And to let everyone see,” she said, “that ‘no’ once existed even when it got burned.”

When the car roll away from the court, the electronic board in front flash a new line:

“PUBLIC SESSION – BROADCAST OPPOSING WITNESS TAPE.”

Raven put hand on the metal box.

Tomorrow, mother will speak in front of everyone.
