Chapter 73 73
IRIAN SHAW.
This couldn't be happening! Why does that man always get on my nerves?
“Everyone in this realm knows that murder is punished with painful execution, so why did he take the blame just to save her?” I ranted, my mind spinning at the thought of it all. “Who cares if he killed that assassin to save his slave. But the chief assassin insisted it was the fae who killed his person, so I was sure Dragon Sovereign must have done that to cover up her mess…”
One would think I was speaking with someone when it was just me in my chamber.
Every thought of what my father had told me was pissing me off. I expected to witness the death of that fae, only for Zaugustus to turn things upside down again.
“I need to go see him. He's overdoing things for a slave whom he shouldn't care about. On what stand did he even come to save a slave that could be killed at any time? That's so annoying!!” I yelled and breathed out.
Without wasting much time, I got dressed and applied some makeup so I would at least look attractive to him. I teleported to his chamber and knocked on the door several times before Orrifin opened the door for me.
“Your Sovereignity!” I bowed to him and walked closer, yet he didn't even glance at me. “Could I get an audience with you?”
He picked up the ink beside the scroll and nodded gently, “Leave us!!” he ordered Orrifin, who shot me a heavy glare and leaped out of the chamber.
I adjusted my dress and sat very close to him, only to get a side glare from him.
“You're still doing this? I have a lot to talk to you about…” I gestured.
He nodded, “Go ahead without touching me…”
Without touching him…
I wonder what he thought his body was like. A gold or a diamond? It wouldn't fund my savings.
“Well, I wanted to ask why you took her side instead of displaying the right judgment. I'm very scared that your people will begin to think you are not suitable to rule, and then will cry to the gods for you to ascend.” I stated, and then took a slight gulp. “Zaugustus, you can't keep protecting a fae slave that deserves to suffer and die in our hands.”
He dropped the ink and looked up to me, but the corner of his eyes darkened. “Who sent that assassin into my quarters?”
“How was I supposed to know?”
“Then what would you have said if the assassin harmed a dragon in my quarters that should be safe?” he asked again, and truly, I became lost for words. “An assassin broke into my quarters, and you expect me to let him live? What if you were in here? Is this the brain you were to rule as the queen beside me?”
That last question…
I bit my lower lip angrily.
“What's that supposed to mean? The assassin only came for the fae slave!!” I yelled at his face, and he scoffed. “You're smiling?”
“How did you know he came for her alone? Did you send him over here?”
My breath caught in my throat, “What are you talking about?”
“I'm judging you with what you just said. The assassin came here for my slave, which meant that he was hired to murder her. Are you the one behind it?”
I stood up instantly, “Zaugustus, I won't stand you accusing me…”
“And I just saw a reason to look into the source of that assassin. Better be innocent!” he snapped and resumed what he was doing.
Panic and anger surged through me all at once. He had never defended anyone as he did for that female fae slave.
When he knew Perrin had claimed her, he did nothing to her. And now?
Heaven please, this was getting on my nerves so much.
“Why not just leave? I don't like your scent…” he said, without even a glance.
My chest tightened. “Don't say that again. My scent is more enticing than yours….”
He coughed heavily at that moment, spitting out blood.
I narrowed my gaze to be sure it was blood that he spat out. And before I could even ask him a question, he spat out another mouthful of blood, his face flushed.
My heart leaped to my throat, and I quickly left his chamber and returned to mine. I sent for Kaira, pacing around my chamber so impatiently.
Was he poisoned? I didn't need to stay long there, so I didn't need to bear the query. As much as everyone knew we were engaged, I would be charged with high treason if I happened not to prove that I was innocent of him getting harmed.
Kaira showed up and bowed to me, but before I could ask her, she explained what was going on, "She's now lifeless! What should be done next?”
Now lifeless?
My eyes grew wide at the thought of that. It couldn't be I was guessing right, so I asked Kaira, “What happens when someone's soulmate is in danger? Do you know the signs for others to know?”
She nodded, rolling her eyes, “I think the first sign is getting choked and spitting out blood, with body itching if the person is a weak dragon. Then if the other die, they die too, because the bond was abruptly severed.”
No! It couldn't be that they were mates.
“My lady, is there a problem? Did you find your mate?” Kaira asked, but I ignored her.
Tears welled in my eyes just at the thought of that shit. How could it be? Dragons do not mate with Faes, and it's been this way for a very long time. So why was this happening?
I saw it with my two eyes, and he choked because his mate was lifeless.
Zaugustus was aware and had kept it a secret. Now I could tell why he always protected her.
But this was an abomination. That fae would be hanged to death if the lords came to know of it, and Zaugustus wasn't supposed to be hiding it from anyone.
Or was I mistaken?
I shook my head and wiped my teary cheek. He found his mate, ignored me, and thought I would let his mate live after all the waiting?
Kaira walked up to me as though he knew I was about to turn around to her, “My lady, you haven't said anything.”
“Since she's now lifeless, burn her body to ashes…and do it immediately and outside the realm,” I ordered, and she left with it.
This was the best thing to do for myself, and I do not feel a bit bad.
