Chapter 94 - The Mind Work
401 St. John's Street.
Seated on a round table with only a candle burning gently, Kate joined her hands with Mary. With their eyes closed, she begins to walk Mary on what to do.
“Take a deep breath,” she said. “And focus your mind on what makes you happy.”
Mary slowly inhaled as instructed. Her mind could figure out a moment that makes her happy except being around Dan. She held that tight in her mind—the moments she had spent with Dan. Her cheeks flushed with a smile.
“Now think of your identity as a gypsy and…”
Before Kate could finish her sentence, the candle burned angrily. She could hear the lights flickering but she refused to open her eyes. She tightened her grip on Mary’s hand and started speaking to calm her down.
A violent wind came, throwing things off the shelves. They could see the vibration of the ground. It shook vigorously but Kate continued to hold Mary’s hands and not letting go.
“Switch your mind to that one thing that makes you happy!”
She knew at this time, the only way to calm Mary was to remind her of what makes her happy.
Mary took a deep breath as she focused her mind on Dan—the moments they had shared. With her mind focused on him, the violent wind ceased and the ground stopped vibrating. The candle started burning gently again.
“Good,” Kate sighed with relief. “Now, I want you to focus on your identity and what makes you happy. Combine them in your mind and then focus on your identity.”
A gentle wind howled toward them but didn’t put off the candle.
This means this time, Mary is getting it right. To be able to control her powers, she needs to remember those dear to her. She can’t let her powers take hold of her to the point she too would be overwhelmed by the magnitude of her powers.
“It’s working,” Kate smiled. “Now, try to levitate us and see how gently you can use your ability.”
For a few seconds, Mary breathed in and out softly. She then took a deep breath and focused her mind on the task she had been instructed.
Mary could no longer feel herself seated and so was Kate. When Mary opened her eyes, she realized they were both levitating above the table. “Wow.” A warm smile lit up her face.
Kate opened her eyes too. “Now, slowly let us sit again,” she said.
“Of course,” Mary grinned. With her mind focused, they both descended on their seats.
***
Bailey County, Texas.
“Ding dong! Ding Dong!”
The bell rang on the second floor of a drowsy apartment in Bailey County, Texas. Henry Rah was fast asleep on his couch. He had stayed awake throughout last night, mastering a new spell. Now he has to sleep during the day to make out for his lost time of rest. He heard the bell ring but thought it was in his dream. He’s too tired to even drag himself to his bed before collapsing on his couch to doze off.
The doorbell continued to ring desperately which was later replaced by a full-fisted knock on the wooden door of his house.
There was no doubt now. Some ins at the door.
“Who’s there?” he asked. He’s too feeble to even drag himself out from the bed.
A recognized voice yelled from the outside saying, “Mr. Rah, it’s me, Jude!”
He gently slipped into his shoes and started walking toward the door to answer.
Rah opened the door and invited the young man in and then quietly shut the door behind him.
“Why disturb my rest?” he rolled his eyes on him. His voice was still groggy.
Rah Henry is the leader of the Rah coven. He should be in his late 90’s but each time old age is upon him, he will take the younger look of himself. He appears to be average in height and still looks like a 40-year-old man. His black beard has grown to the point he tied it into a knot.
“Forgive me Rah,” Jude said, making a slight bow. “I never knew you were resting.”
Jude is Kate’s twin brother. They both channeled their powers together to unify their magic. This means, that when one of them is doing magic, the other will know and could see through the other’s eyes to know what’s happening. He has a cheerful personality and has a plump face. His darker skin makes young women from her coven want to have him. His hair is shaved to make his head un-naturally bald.
Rah brought his face closer, staring at Jude dead in the eye. “You better have a good reason to disturb my sleep,” he gnawed at the bottom of his lip.
“I do,” he said. “My sister, Kate has erred.”
Rah’s eyes widened with curiosity. “Speak up.”
“She’s helping a gypsy girl to master her control of her powers.”
“So?” his eyes widened the more. “What does that have to do with me?”
“Because this same gypsy will help the hybrid alter the curse of the moon, tonight.”
Rah’s jaw dropped as his hands clenched on his sides. “The curse of the moon won’t be altered!” his nostrils flared as his eyes narrowed into slits. “We must not let this happen!”
“What do you propose we do?” Jude asked. His royalty lies with Rah's coven and not solely with her sister. He has justified himself in his heart for reporting Kate.
“First things first,” Rah muttered, lowering his head. “We need to get to Chicago, stop the spell, and afterward, strip your sister of her powers.”
“I will car the agent to book our flight to Chi…”
“No need for that. We don’t need the agent to teleport to Chicago.” He sneered. “But we need a few witches to be able to restrain your sister and bring her back to Bailey County.”
