Chapter 71

Chapter 71

Then I felt a sharp pain shoot through my shoulder.

All my nerves seemed to catch fire at that moment.

I felt a bullet fly into my shoulder.

The bullet pierced through my flesh - it was completely different from when I had fired a gun before.

I'd thought many times about what it would be like if I got shot, but I never imagined it would all happen so fast.

I looked at Virio in front of me and smiled weakly. "See, I protected you again..."

The next second, I passed out, no longer aware of what happened behind me.

The last thing I could hear was Virio's almost furious voice. "Everyone, open fire!"

When I woke up again, what greeted me was a white ceiling and white walls.

I carefully turned my head and found Virio by my bedside. I immediately felt relieved.

Virio was holding my hand, lost in thought. Sensing my slight movement, he looked up. When he saw I was awake, he breathed a sigh of relief. "Elvira!"

Virio moved to hug me, but his movements were careful, afraid of hurting me. As he held me, I looked at the ceiling, finding the lights too bright.

"Where am I..."

I blinked hard, guessing I was in a hospital now, but what exactly happened that day at the dock?

Only then did Virio sit up straight, but he said to me, "Don't think about all that yet. Let me get you a doctor for a checkup first."

After saying this, he got up, but I grabbed his hand.

Even though my movements weren't very smooth at the moment, I looked at him pleadingly. "Don't leave me."

I was surprised to find that even though I'd been shot in the shoulder, my hand could still move, and I could still talk.

At least my other senses were still working normally.

Virio said with a trembling voice, "I... I thought you would lose your memory too."

Hearing this, I froze for a moment, then realized Virio must be afraid the previous tragedy would repeat itself. "I won't. I don't know why you lost your memory, but I won't."

"Why are you so sure?"

Finding that I didn't want him to go out and find a doctor, Virio simply sat down beside me and held my hand in return.

Actually, speaking was a bit difficult for me at that moment. My body's weakness made my breath faint, but I still tried hard to say, "Because my new life started the day I met you. I won't give up any memory related to you."

Hearing me say this, Virio's eyes actually turned red.

It was the first time I'd seen him cry because of me.

I carefully tried to raise my hand to wipe his tears, but as soon as I moved, it pulled at my other shoulder.

I cried out in pain. Virio snapped back to reality and carefully comforted me, "I'll get a doctor to check you over. I won't leave you, okay?"

"Don't go, just press the button." I indicated the bell at the head of the bed.

Virio paused, then remembered that hospitals have this feature, and smiled helplessly.

A few minutes later, the doctor came to examine me and said everything was stable.

"We recommend staying in the hospital for observation for a few days, but try not to pull at the wound or disturb the patient's rest."

After the doctor and nurse left, Virio sat down again and looked at me. "When you were unconscious, do you remember what you saw?"

I shook my head. "I don't remember, but I heard you talking to them."

"I remember you seemed very angry at the time."

Hearing me say this, Virio instantly fell silent.

After a long while, I suddenly realized this silence wasn't right, so I grabbed his hand. "What's wrong? What happened after I was injured and passed out? Can you tell me?"

In front of me, Virio rarely became so silent. We'd been through so much together, I thought I knew him very well.

Now something big must have happened to Virio, making him not know how to tell me.

But what could there be that he couldn't tell me?

That day, we appeared at the port to negotiate with Alberto.

"Did something happen to them? What did they do in the end?"

Virio looked at me, his eyes hiding emotions I couldn't understand. Finally, he slowly said to me, "The moment you turned to protect me, I saw that the person who fired wasn't actually Alberto's subordinate, but Killian."

Hearing this, I froze.

So it was my uncle who shot me.

I thought there would be another way to resolve this.

But I didn't expect Alberto to actually reach some kind of agreement with Killian, so he pretended to be held hostage when the real target had always been me.

I covered my face. "That day, I saw him and Alberto exchange looks. He grabbed the gun. I thought he was going to shoot Alberto, but at such close range, he seemed to miss everything."

Virio said, "His target was always us, but I didn't expect him to be vicious enough to personally kill you."

I fell silent. "So after I passed out..."

Based on Virio's personality and way of doing things, I'd basically already guessed that in his fury, Virio would have his men open fire, and perhaps Killian was already dead.

The next second, Virio's words confirmed my guess. "Killian is indeed dead, and I personally shot him."

Hearing this, I looked up in surprise.

I didn't expect it to be Virio who did it.

Virio gripped my hand, seeming a bit nervous. From his trembling fingers, I could feel his current mood. "I don't know if you'll blame me after learning about this, so I wanted to be the one to tell you."

"Elvira, you protected me before and fired a shot at someone. This time, you also got shot in the shoulder to protect me. The person who shot you was Killian, so I couldn't forgive him. I admit I was acting on emotion at the time, but thinking about it carefully now, I don't regret it."

Hearing him say this, I fell silent again. After a while, I looked up, meeting Virio's anxious gaze. "Don't worry, I won't blame you."

"Actually, whether Killian died by my hand or yours makes no difference."

I believed that Virio and I were now one.

To distract myself, I asked Virio about Alberto's whereabouts.

"To complete this deal and take control, Alberto brought his two best squads. After what happened with Killian, he panicked, and we took down his squads. We'd contacted the feds beforehand, so they also arrived at the scene."
