Chapter 270 Are You Free?
Chapter 270 Are You Free?
Daisy said, "I don't care what's going on with you—since you already let Luna know, don't make her worry."
Vincent finally sent over his location.
When Daisy drove Luna there, she expected to see Vanessa, but instead found Vincent waiting alone for the results.
The doctor brought over the test report. "Nothing serious. The chest discomfort is likely due to emotional stress."
Daisy glanced at Vincent, surprised he was even capable of emotional stress.
The doctor added, "Overwork is also a possibility."
Luna understood. "Daddy's always busy. From now on, spend more time playing with me and less time working!"
Her innocent words lightened the previously somber atmosphere.
Vincent rarely let down his intimidating guard, and he said gently to her, "Okay."
He held Luna in his arms, father and daughter both clinging to each other as if embracing their entire world.
The doctor smiled warmly. "Having such a precious daughter must make all your worries disappear, doesn't it?"
Since there was nothing wrong, Daisy said nothing more, quietly watching Vincent and Luna interact.
When it seemed about time, she said, "If Luna's really worried about Daddy, maybe she should stay at Daddy's house for a few days."
Vincent paused. "No need. She's very attached to you right now, and you're better at teaching her."
Daisy was taken aback, not expecting such an assessment from him.
Luna asked, disappointed, "Daddy doesn't want me at your house?"
Vincent shook his head. "No, it's just that Daddy hasn't had time to go home lately."
Luna said, "Okay then."
But she was still disappointed.
Because this was the first time Daddy had refused to let her stay over.
Vincent added, "But I'll try to make time to take you to school and pick you up for fencing class, okay?"
Luna said, "Okay!"
They returned from the hospital around noon. After Daisy and Luna had lunch, Daisy took Luna to preschool.
Vincent had something come up that afternoon and couldn't pick up Luna. She was disappointed, but Vincent promised on the phone to be there every day going forward.
The next morning he did show up. Luna's braids weren't even done yet, but when she heard Daddy had arrived, she rushed out asking him to help with her hair.
Daisy followed behind with the backpack, panting from the rush.
Vincent remained calm and seemed pleased that Luna was still so attached to him. He braided her hair in a style that Daisy privately thought looked terrible.
But she said nothing. As long as the child was happy.
Wednesday afternoon, Shawn suddenly called saying she wanted to get together—there was something important she needed to tell Daisy.
Ever since Shawn started dating, the two had been in touch less frequently than before. Daisy understood.
When Shawn reached out this time, Daisy arrived at the coffee shop with a teasing smile. "What, didn't bring your guy?"
A blush colored Shawn's face. "Hey, this is just us girls hanging out—no stinky boys allowed!"
But shortly after Daisy sat down with a smile, she heard her drop a bombshell: "I have amazing news—Marcus and I are getting engaged!"
"Engaged?" Even though Daisy had witnessed plenty of complicated situations these past two years, this news made her eyes widen in shock.
Shawn nodded, her smile sweet. "His family's already agreed!"
"This... this..." Daisy struggled to find words. "Didn't he have issues with his family?"
Shawn explained Marcus's situation.
His birth mother had been killed by the Bennett family, so Marcus had been looking for an opportunity to get revenge.
But the person in power at the Bennett family appreciated his abilities and was willing to give him a chance to compete for control.
"So the people in the Bennett family who killed his birth mother all know that once he's in charge, they'll definitely be held accountable. They're going to do everything they can to destroy him!"
Understanding the power struggle involved, Daisy gripped Shawn's hand firmly. "Marcus is surrounded by wolves. You can't marry him!"
The sweetness faded from Shawn's face, replaced by melancholy. She naturally understood the dangers ahead, but nothing could shake her determination to marry Marcus.
Love made people blind like that.
Looking at her, Daisy saw herself from years ago, insisting on marrying into the Black family.
This little gathering ended on bad terms—the first real fight she and Shawn had had in all these years.
The reason was that Daisy suggested Marcus might just be using the Collins family to support his revenge, while Shawn disagreed with her assessment.
After Shawn left the coffee shop, Daisy sat alone in a daze for a long time.
For the first time since the divorce, she initiated contact with Vincent. [Do you have time?]
Vincent replied almost instantly. [I do now. What's wrong?]
Daisy's mind was in chaos. Not sure how to phrase her request, she sent him her location.
After all, getting Vincent to do something usually required an appointment—even the divorce had.
She'd long since gotten into the habit of making sure he set aside time in advance to discuss things.
But this time Vincent arrived quickly.
It was raining outside. He'd come in a hurry, and when he entered the coffee shop, raindrops still clung to his shoulders.
Daisy thought she must be seeing things—she could have sworn she saw concern in his eyes.
He sat down across from her in silence.
Daisy ordered two coffees. The words rolled around on her tongue before she finally forced them out with difficulty. "Can you help me look into Marcus?"
Vincent asked, "What aspect?"
"Everything about him." Daisy wanted to expel all the tightness in her chest. "He's pursuing Shawn. They're getting married."
Vincent realized he didn't know who Shawn was, or why she was so important to Daisy.
Important enough to make her come to him for help.
His silence made Daisy anxious. "Is that not possible? Then how much can you find out?"
"You're worried about your friend's safety, so you want to investigate Marcus's motives for this marriage?" Vincent finally answered. "I can do it."
"Thank you." Daisy breathed a sigh of relief, hands clasped tightly. "What do I need to offer in exchange?"
Vincent realized that when he helped her, he hadn't actually thought about wanting repayment.
But he quickly caught himself. Given their current relationship, if she didn't repay him, it wouldn't make sense. They couldn't settle things properly.
While he was silent, Daisy felt like she'd returned to those years of anxiously waiting for his responses, and the familiar feeling irritated her.
Vincent finally spoke. "Let's wait until after I investigate."
Daisy wanted to ask why.
Vincent opened his mouth almost the instant she thought to ask. "Because the Bennett family situation is complicated. I don't know what price I'll have to pay to investigate, so naturally I can't ask you for repayment yet."
Daisy was surprised he would actually explain himself to her.
She paused, then said, "Okay."
Vincent asked, "Is there anything else?"
