Chapter 269 Vanessa Won't Teach Children
Chapter 269 Vanessa Won't Teach Children
This wasn't because Daisy was heartless.
It was because Vincent's heart was simply too hard to read.
After Noah's reminder last time, she couldn't help but think back on the past.
Vincent always seemed exceptionally good at putting someone on a pedestal, making them fall for him, and then withdrawing without mercy.
She had loved her so unreservedly back then. Vanessa had been infatuated and devoted all these years. Wasn't it all because of this?
Exceptional people seemed naturally entitled to more love, yet this love, at least to Vincent, was just something easily obtained.
She didn't want Luna to suffer that same treatment one day.
The three of them got along fairly well. Luna's temperament was much better now, and she was very polite to Felix.
Felix clearly wasn't very experienced with kids—he fumbled through many things—but this adjustment period wasn't unbearable.
Luna spotted a kitten hat at a shop and picked one out for Daisy too.
Felix bent down with a smile. "The hat's so cute! Luna, could you pick one for me too?"
"Yes, yes!" Luna chose another one.
There were only three hats with cat ears in that style. She personally placed them on both of their heads.
The three of them looked at their reflections in the mirror and couldn't help but laugh.
Just then, a soft voice called out from nearby, "Luna?"
"Daddy!" Luna's eyes lit up instantly, and she dashed over.
Vincent crouched slightly, opening his arms and catching Luna securely.
Luna still wore that little kitten hat.
And Daisy and Felix stood across from him, wearing the matching ones.
Like a couple's set. Or a family set.
It had to be said—they looked good together.
Luna felt like Daddy was holding her especially tight today, so she snuggled closer into Vincent's embrace. "Daddy, what are you doing here?"
Vincent said, "Keeping Richard company while he buys gifts."
Richard and Sam emerged from another shop.
Seeing Daisy and the others, Richard's expression remained unchanged as he said cheerfully, "Is that Daisy? Out shopping with Luna?"
Daisy nodded, her expression softening. "Richard, what brings you out in person today?"
Richard didn't hear her call him Grandpa, and he felt a little disappointed.
Sam had been abroad for years. Vincent was always busy with work and had a cold temperament.
Only Daisy was perceptive and well-mannered, treating people with genuine warmth.
He saw it clearly—Daisy was a rare, filial child who truly treated him as an elder.
So he, too, genuinely cared for her as a granddaughter-in-law.
Though he'd long accepted the fact of their divorce, he couldn't help but feel wistful.
Still, he wouldn't show it. He'd seen Felix, and he wouldn't do anything to embarrass Daisy or put her in an awkward position.
So he simply played the easygoing elder, saying with a chuckle, "At my age, I need to get out and walk around. It's also an excuse to make these two ungrateful boys keep me company."
Sam lifted the items in his hands incredulously. "Grandpa, this isn't filial? I've been carrying everything you wanted to buy this whole time! Including that sugar-painting figurine you wanted!"
Daisy laughed. "You should eat less sugar."
Seeing Daisy laugh, everyone present collectively relaxed.
Richard turned to Felix. "You have good taste. Daisy's beautiful, has a great personality, and she's capable."
Felix smiled genuinely. "Thank you for the compliment."
They exchanged a few more pleasantries. Vincent didn't say a word the entire time.
He just held Luna, his gaze fixed on her kitten hat, lost in thought.
Luna was unusually quiet too, as if sensing her father's mood.
When Daisy finished the small talk and was ready to leave, she said to Luna, "Luna, let's go."
Vincent didn't let go.
Luna said, "Mommy, I..."
Daisy smiled gently but firmly. "Luna, Daddy still has things to do. Let's head out first."
She took Luna from him and added, "If you miss Daddy, you can call him later when he's free, okay?"
Luna agreed.
Daisy continued, "Now we need to say goodbye to Richard, Felix, and Daddy."
Luna raised her little hand. "Goodbye, Richard! Goodbye, Felix! Goodbye, Daddy!"
Richard and the others waved goodbye to Luna.
After watching Daisy's figure disappear into the distance, Richard's expression slowly changed. He picked up his cane and struck Vincent hard.
Vincent looked at him, unusually bewildered.
Richard said, "Look at Luna now—so well-behaved and polite. 'This' is what the Black family's eldest granddaughter should be like. But what did you and Vanessa turn her into before?!"
Vincent was silent for a moment. "I didn't teach Luna properly."
Richard snorted coldly. "Vanessa doesn't know how to raise children."
Vincent didn't refute it. Anyone could see Luna's transformation.
He'd never raised a child before and had assumed Luna inherited the Hart family's difficult genes and temperament, so he'd indulged her by default.
Only now did he realize how ridiculously wrong he'd been.
Richard added, "What good is regret now? Daisy's about to marry someone else."
He paused, then said, "I was even thinking of having Sam help me, but it's too late. It's all because you broke Daisy's heart."
With that, Richard huffed off angrily.
Sam's face reddened slightly. He tried to comfort Vincent. "Bro, don't listen to Grandpa. He just likes to joke around."
Vincent glanced at him. His expression didn't look much better.
Sam quickly chased after Richard. "Grandpa, wait for me!"
Everyone was leaving. Only Vincent remained where he was. He looked in the direction Daisy had gone.
But Daisy and Felix had long since walked away—even their backs were out of sight. All he could see was the bustling crowd.
He suddenly felt a dull discomfort in his chest. He wasn't sure if it was because Richard had just scolded him.
An aching, swelling emotion spread through him. It was unbearable.
The daytime outing had been pleasant. That evening, after Daisy finished her bath, she saw Luna—also freshly bathed—playing with her phone watch on the bed.
Luna said to her, "Mommy, Daddy's heart isn't feeling well. He has to go to the hospital for a checkup. I want to go with him."
Luna's voice was already tinged with tears.
Daisy was startled. "What?"
Vincent was perfectly fine. How could something be wrong with his body?
Luna went to ask Vincent which hospital, but Vincent's voice was distant. "You don't need to come."
Daisy normally didn't interfere with their calls, but she couldn't help asking, "Which hospital are you even going to? Luna already knows you're sick—there's no way she's not going!"
Vincent seemed to pick up on the reproach and concern in her tone. He explained, "I didn't tell her. My private doctor just happened to report it while we were on the phone."
