Chapter 264 You Must Be Careful, Vincent
Chapter 264 You Must Be Careful, Vincent
Simon never expected Vincent to initiate a conversation with him, especially about work.
He grunted in acknowledgment.
Right now, everyone in the Hart family only maintained surface-level politeness toward Vincent—sometimes treating him worse than a stranger.
But Vincent seemed completely unfazed. He continued, "Black Group is also interested in that project. Want to collaborate?"
Though he didn't speak loudly, everyone at the table heard him.
For a second, the private dining room fell silent.
Was this really the same Vincent who'd always looked down on the Hart family? Hadn't he always acted superior, avoiding anything connected to the Hart family's business like the plague?
Just then, Luna piped up, "Mommy, I want shrimp!"
Daisy started peeling the shell for her—this time using a fork instead of her nails, though her movements were still a bit clumsy.
Seeing this, Vincent picked up a shrimp and said gently, "There's a trick to peeling these. Look, like this—"
Daisy caught on quickly, her expression relaxing.
The two of them soon peeled a small mountain of shrimp for Luna, who ate with pure bliss written all over her face.
Before, Vanessa would peel shrimp for her too, but she'd always warn her not to eat too much.
And when Vanessa got busy with something else, she'd stop peeling altogether.
Now, with both Mom and Dad working together, not only were they fast and efficient, but it filled her with an extra sense of happiness.
The Hart family members exchanged glances again.
Throughout the entire meal, Daisy and Vincent didn't speak to each other. In the end, Daisy picked up the check.
Vincent said, "I shouldn't have let you pay."
Daisy asked coolly, "What? You think I can't afford it?"
Vincent paused. "That's not what I meant. I'll treat next time."
On the drive home, Simon received a collaboration proposal from Black Group.
Ella saw it too and asked him, "Don't you think Vincent's been acting really strange lately? Like he's suddenly super polite and well-mannered?"
Simon said, "I'll ask Daisy if something happened between them to make Vincent act so out of character."
From a business standpoint, if Black Group was extending an olive branch, he'd definitely accept. But this also involved the awkward relationship between Daisy and Vincent, so even with profit on the line, he didn't want to decide without consulting her.
After getting home, Daisy took his call. Standing by the window, gazing at the night outside, she felt momentarily lost. "Between him and me... nothing's happened except the divorce."
"Then why does it seem like after the divorce, he's actually..." Simon searched for the right words.
Ella cut in, "Before, he treated you like his mortal enemy. Now he's actually acting normal."
Something seemed to occur to Daisy. She let out a bitter laugh. "If I had to give a reason, maybe it's because I cleared the way for Vanessa."
She sighed deeply. "Throughout that marriage... they all thought I was the one bullying Vanessa."
Simon fell silent.
Daisy continued, "Look over the collaboration carefully. As long as there's no trap, it's probably his way of compensating me. Just take it."
Simon replied, "Got it!"
Daisy didn't dwell on the matter.
During Grandma's illness, she'd been working herself to exhaustion, falling into bed the moment she got home. She'd only just caught up on sleep when the company closed a major deal and organized a reception to celebrate.
At the reception, everyone seemed to be having a great time.
But the alcohol was probably too strong—halfway through, she started feeling dizzy and disoriented.
Ethan was still deep in conversation and didn't notice her condition.
Noah, however, hurried over. "Daisy, are you okay?"
He was about to steady her when someone beat him to it, wrapping an arm around Daisy's waist and pulling her completely into his embrace.
Because of Noah's exclamation, quite a few people had noticed what was happening. But when they saw who it was, everyone looked shocked. "Mr. Black?"
"What's Mr. Black doing here?" Ethan walked over.
Vincent didn't explain. He just looked down at Daisy and scooped her up in his arms. "She's drunk. I'll take her to rest."
"That doesn't seem appropriate," Noah blurted out.
Though he didn't usually pay attention to gossip, after nearly getting burned by Vanessa, he'd kept close tabs on anything involving Daisy.
So he knew they were already divorced.
Under these circumstances, Vincent taking Daisy to rest?
Vincent asked coolly, "Is there anyone more appropriate than me?"
Even divorced couples were still former spouses, after all.
At today's reception, there really wasn't anyone more qualified than him to take Daisy to rest.
But Ethan frowned almost imperceptibly. "I recall Daisy has some close female colleagues. Why not have one of them take her?"
Vincent smiled slightly. "Would she know the way?"
Ethan narrowed his eyes, confirming something.
Vincent had designs on Daisy.
If he hadn't been here today, Vincent might have actually succeeded.
He stepped in front of Vincent, pulling out his phone. Though his face wore a smile, his eyes were cold. "Daisy told me before that if this kind of situation happened, I should contact her boyfriend, Felix. I'll call Felix right now."
The two men appeared courteous on the surface but were clearly at odds.
Before long, Felix drove over and took Daisy from Vincent's arms.
While waiting for him to arrive, Vincent had sat on the sofa, maintaining his hold around Daisy's waist, as if she were his possession.
During that time, he'd even personally fed her hangover soup.
Though everyone present continued with what they were doing, their attention kept drifting.
Hadn't Vincent always been extremely cold toward Daisy before?
So why now...
When Felix got Daisy into the car, she was already less out of it.
"Was there something wrong with the alcohol tonight?" After opening her eyes, she first checked her surroundings, then murmured this question.
Her alcohol tolerance wasn't that weak.
This incident made her think involuntarily of the last time.
It had been a similar scene.
Felix had been feeling a bit jealous, but hearing this, his expression turned serious. "I'll look into it."
Daisy's head was pounding.
Felix drove her to the hospital, but the test results showed she was just drunk—no trace of other drugs.
Could it really all be just an accident? Had she mistakenly drunk something with too high an alcohol content?
Seeing her clutching her head in pain, Felix felt terrible. "If you can't figure it out, think about it tomorrow. Rest for now, and drink less in the future."
Daisy smiled bitterly. "Okay."
The next morning at work, Daisy found Ethan waiting for her.
He patted her shoulder, saying meaningfully, "You need to be careful around Vincent."
