Chapter 329 The Crisis of the Stone Group
Chapter 329 The Crisis of the Stone Group
Alaric's gaze remained fixed on the direction Bruce had just left, not answering immediately.
Robert waited quietly. After a while, Alaric asked in a flat tone.
"You've been getting pretty close with Ms. Stone's secretary in private?"
Robert hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded slightly, "Not bad."
The Hughes Group and the Stone Group had always worked together, so Robert and Taylor had plenty of contact time.
Apart from work matters, the two would occasionally get together for a meal.
Alaric hummed in acknowledgement.
A flash of confusion crossed Robert's eyes, but he immediately understood what Alaric meant.
Taylor was completely loyal to Evelyn. As long as he dropped some hints to Taylor, Taylor should be able to figure out what it meant.
Alaric wasn't planning to personally get involved in the conflict between Bruce and Evelyn.
But since it concerned the Stone family, it would definitely affect Cordelia.
After Robert understood Alaric's meaning, he bent down to get in the car and drive Alaric back to Garden Vista Estates.
Early the next morning, Cordelia brought Evelyn's breakfast over to her.
Before Evelyn had even sat down, she received a call from Taylor.
Hearing what Taylor was talking about on the phone, Evelyn gave a cold laugh and said flatly.
"I got it."
"I'll handle it."
Hearing this, Taylor asked softly, "Ms. Stone, Benjamin Howard has been wanting to meet with you, hoping to reach a deal with you. What do you think - should we meet with him?"
Benjamin had always been eyeing Bruce's position hungrily.
If Evelyn and Benjamin strike a deal, Bruce's position will be under attack from every side.
Evelyn's hand holding the phone tightened slightly. After a few seconds, she responded softly.
"Let's wait and see."
Hearing Evelyn's words, Taylor was silent for quite a while before speaking.
"Alright, Ms. Stone."
Evelyn put down her phone, and with a faint smile, reached out to rub Amber's head, saying warmly.
"Amber needs to eat more so you can grow tall."
Amber nodded seriously, "Amber wants to grow as tall as Aunt Evelyn."
Hearing this, Evelyn chuckled lightly. Just as she was about to speak, her phone rang again.
Seeing the call was from the Stone Group's legal department, her eyes darkened slightly, but she quickly calmed down. She looked up at Donald and said softly,
"I need to take this call. You all go ahead and eat."
Donald nodded.
Cordelia was sitting across from Evelyn. She caught the fleeting look of gravity in Evelyn's eyes and couldn't help feeling worried.
Her gaze unconsciously followed Evelyn.
Evelyn got up and left the dining room, walked to the living room to answer the call, and kept walking outside.
"What is it?"
As soon as she answered, the lawyer said in a heavy voice.
"Ms. Stone, eight years ago, families of the River City Estate victims picked up some bizarre conspiracy theories from God knows where. They became convinced that those people were killed and sealed into the foundation like some horror movie plot. They marched on River City Estate, demanding they dig up the bodies and reopen the whole investigation."
"The economic talks between Luminar and Shadowpine are about to start. If this kind of news breaks now, I'm afraid it won't be good for the Stone Group."
"I've already had people calm those people down. What do you think we should do?"
Hearing this, Evelyn's hand holding the phone suddenly tightened, and her expression turned ice cold.
She took a deep breath, her tone frighteningly cold.
"I'm coming over right now."
After saying this, Evelyn hung up the lawyer's call and was about to leave.
When Cordelia came out, Evelyn had already hung up. Seeing her about to leave, Cordelia quickly said.
"Evelyn, what happened?"
Evelyn's steps paused slightly. She turned to look at Cordelia and said calmly and composedly.
"Nothing major. A new assistant messed up some data. We're about to sign a contract, so I need to go back and sign again."
"I won't be joining you all for breakfast."
Cordelia looked at Evelyn's relaxed expression and frowned slightly, feeling that things weren't as simple as Evelyn made them sound.
She wanted to ask more, but Evelyn had already turned and walked toward the garage.
Cordelia stood on the steps and saw that when Evelyn drove the car out of the garage, she was on the phone, her expression extremely serious.
Cordelia sighed and returned to the dining room, where the TV was playing today's news.
Donald really enjoyed listening to the news while eating breakfast.
Cordelia walked over, about to tell Donald that Evelyn had already gone to the company, when she heard the news mention "River City Estate."
Four years ago, River City Estate had a serious safety accident during construction, resulting in over ten workers being injured and five workers dying.
As a result of this incident, the Stone family was sued.
At that time, Donald was the company's president, and Evelyn was still a manager at the Stone Group.
This project was something Donald had personally demanded to launch and handled completely. As a result, a major safety accident occurred, and many properties under the Stone Group were affected to varying degrees.
Almost all of the Stone Group's projects were shut down for inspection.
As a result, the Stone Group was severely damaged.
Before this, Evelyn had already had ideas about transforming the company, but Donald had never agreed with Evelyn's thinking.
After this incident, Donald developed depression and stepped down, and Evelyn took full control of the Stone Group and completed the transformation.
This issue had clearly been resolved four years ago, yet now it was being reported in the news again.
With the economic exchange meeting between Luminar and Shadowpine coming up, it would definitely affect the Stone Group.
Cordelia frowned tightly, really not understanding why these victims' families were suddenly making trouble.
Even demanding to reopen the investigation eight years later.
"Grandpa, what's wrong?"
Amber sat in the dining room and saw Donald's hand holding the utensils trembling uncontrollably. She reached out her small hand and placed it on the back of Donald's hand, asking with concern.
Hearing the sound, Cordelia quickly walked into the dining room.
Donald also heard the news broadcast. The River City Estate project had always been a thorn in his side.
If River City Estate hadn't had problems back then with its completely new residential design concept, it would definitely have sparked a new wave of excitement.
The Stone Group's influence would have increased as a result.
Up until recently, Cordelia would still see Donald frequently reviewing the River City Estate design plans, trying to find the specific problems.
Now that this matter was being exposed to the public again, it was like ripping open Donald's wound and displaying it before the world. Naturally, Donald's emotions were agitated and hard to control.
"Dad."
Cordelia walked over and patted Donald's back.
Allegra immediately turned off the TV and brought Donald his medicine.
After taking his medicine, Donald's emotions were still very agitated. With red-rimmed eyes, he gripped Cordelia's hand tightly.
"Take me to River City Estate to find your Evelyn."
