Chapter 311 Alaric Is Actually Not Scary
Chapter 311 Alaric Is Actually Not Scary
After they left the mall, Evelyn got a call from work and rushed to the office.
Alaric refused to sit in his own spacious luxury car and insisted on squeezing into the cramped passenger seat of Cordelia's car.
Seeing him open the door and get in so naturally, Cordelia reminded him to buckle up before starting the car and heading back to the Stone Manor.
On the road.
A message came in from Hannah.
Cordelia had learned her lesson a few days ago, so she'd bought a phone holder for her car.
When Hannah's message came through, she glanced at it while waiting at a red light.
Hannah had sent a voice message. Without thinking much of it, she tapped to play it.
"Cordelia, Harry bought a yacht. I'm borrowing it tomorrow - I'm planning to throw a birthday party on the yacht tomorrow night. Make sure you get everything sorted today and get to the dock by 7 PM tomorrow. We're setting off at 7:30. I'll introduce you to my boyfriend then. We're gonna drink till we drop."
Hannah's voice was excited, her words filled with laughter.
Cordelia was infected by her enthusiasm, smiling as she pressed the voice button and replied, "Okay, I'll definitely be there on time."
Just as she finished replying to Hannah, the light turned green.
She started the car, and the man sitting beside her spoke with a slightly dissatisfied tone. "Aren't you going to ask if you can bring a plus-one?"
Cordelia paused and glanced sideways at Alaric. "You mean you're the plus-one?"
Alaric hummed in acknowledgement.
Cordelia pressed her lips together and said quietly, "That probably won't work."
"They don't really know you. If you come, it might kill the vibe. Besides, you're not my family."
Alaric was deeply wounded by Cordelia's last remark, a hint of hurt appearing in his eyes.
"I'm working hard to become your family again, aren't I?"
The corners of Cordelia's lips curved slightly as she turned to Alaric and said softly, "Mr. Hughes, this level of effort won't cut it."
After saying this, she looked back at the road and sped up.
Looking at her beautiful profile, Alaric's previously hurt feelings now carried a hint of amusement.
Cordelia had subtly softened, not directly rejecting him like before.
He was getting his chance.
Alaric couldn't suppress his smile but still tried to contain his joy, saying with dissatisfaction, "So you're off to your party tomorrow, and I'll have no one to look after me."
Hearing this, Cordelia couldn't help but give him a disdainful look.
Was he really that pitiful?
For the rest of the drive, Alaric stayed quiet.
Cordelia didn't know what to say either.
Back at the Stone Manor, Cordelia headed straight upstairs to the children's room to find Amber.
Donald was preparing dinner.
Though Alaric couldn't do much, he still went into the kitchen to help.
With his right hand injured, he couldn't do much and ended up causing more trouble than he helped.
Donald didn't have the heart to scold him. He sighed and said, "Alaric, if you need my help with anything, just tell me directly. Your hand isn't healed yet, so just go rest."
Alaric knew full well he'd been more of a hindrance than a help.
After all, he'd never done these things before, and he really disliked that greasy smell.
He smiled awkwardly and said to Donald, "Since you put it that way, I won't be shy. Cordelia's going to a yacht party tomorrow, and I want to know which dock they're leaving from."
Donald looked at Alaric and asked gently, "Cordelia won't take you with her?"
Alaric nodded. "That's right."
Somehow, Donald detected a wounded puppy dog look coming from Alaric's towering six-foot-three figure.
"I'll talk to her for you."
Hearing this, Alaric quickly grabbed Donald. "Mr. Stone, don't say anything to her. It's a bestie gathering, so it really isn't appropriate for me to go. But I have my own yacht—I can follow along."
It dawned on Donald, and he said casually, "So basically emotional support through presence?"
Alaric paused for a moment when he heard Donald's words, then said, "Mr. Stone, you're getting pretty fluent with internet slang these days."
Donald chuckled and replied, "Right? I'm practically a digital native now."
Alaric chuckled softly and stopped trying to help, only occasionally handing things over.
When Cordelia came downstairs carrying Amber and didn't see Alaric, she glanced out the floor-to-ceiling window—his car was still parked outside.
Robert had just brought things into the house.
Most of today's haul belonged to Amber.
Cordelia's work wardrobe was all about comfort and casual style—after all, she had to wear a white coat over it anyway.
After Robert brought the shopping bags to the living room, he showed Amber the princess dresses they'd bought for her, one by one.
Then he kept bringing up Alaric.
He was afraid Amber wouldn't appreciate how good Alaric was.
Cordelia raised an eyebrow slightly and sat to the side. Seeing Robert making Amber so happy, she smiled and took out her phone to message Hannah.
[I want to bring someone.]
Hannah quickly replied to Cordelia's message with a voice note.
After Cordelia tapped play, she held the phone to her ear without putting it on speaker.
"What? But I'm already at capacity. The yacht can only hold twelve people. Actually, I have other friends I wanted to invite but couldn't. After all, it's Harry's yacht, and he's a celebrity. If we go over the limit and get caught, it could definitely hurt Harry's reputation."
After listening to the voice message, Cordelia replied.
[No worries, if it's full, forget it. He's probably not that interested anyway.]
Hannah caught the key point.
[He?]
[You mean Mr. Hughes?]
Cordelia replied.
[Yes, he was sitting right next to me this afternoon when you sent that message, so...]
Hannah's reply came almost instantly.
[Damn it, no no no, you can't bring Mr. Hughes. If he comes, the whole vibe will probably turn boring.]
[To be honest, I'm kind of scared of Mr. Hughes.]
After sending this message, Hannah added a crying emoji.
Cordelia raised an eyebrow slightly and replied.
[Okay, I won't bring him.]
After Cordelia replied, Hannah immediately responded.
[Oh god, if Mr. Hughes discovers I said no to him coming to my birthday party, is he gonna end me?]
[I'm already picturing our next encounter—he'll be staring me down like he wants to obliterate me on the spot.]
Seeing this message, Cordelia couldn't help but laugh out loud. To ease Hannah's worries, she quickly replied.
[Don't worry, I already told him I didn't want to bring him. I won't tell him it was your call.]
Hannah sent back several grateful emojis—she really was scared of Alaric.
Cordelia smiled softly, put away her phone, and glanced at the man walking out of the kitchen carrying a plate of fruit with one hand.
He really wasn't that scary.
