Chapter 310 Spoils of War
Chapter 310 Spoils of War
If only he'd had the guts to stand by her three years ago, maybe they wouldn't have ended up in divorce court. She pressed her lips together and spoke coolly.
"Then Mr. Hughes is going to have to spend some money."
Alaric reached out and tucked a stray lock of hair from her forehead behind her ear, replying in a low voice.
"Without the Stone family, there would be no Alaric today. More than half of my money should be yours anyway, so it's not really spending."
Cordelia looked up at him, her eyes flickering slightly before she quickly lowered her head to hide her emotions.
Janet listened to Alaric's words with a somewhat surprised expression.
Any man would be too proud to admit publicly that his success came from marrying into money. And Cordelia was just his ex-wife now.
Yet he had said all that in front of everyone. It was as if he had put her on a pedestal.
Janet bit her lip hardas she watched the sales staff treat Cordelia with eyes full of respect and deference. She took a deep breath, feeling unwilling yet helpless about it.
Composing herself, she looked up at Alaric and said softly.
"Alaric, it's just a piece of clothing. If Ms. Stone likes it, I'll let her have it. Why make such a big deal out of it?"
Alaric glanced coldly at Janet, then looked away and replied coolly, "This isn't about a piece of clothing. Besides, this outfit was never yours to begin with. What do you mean by ‘let her have it'?"
Janet's face turned even paler at Alaric's words.
Alaric's meaning was crystal clear. Whether it was the clothes or he himself, neither had ever belonged to her.
Before, she could still confidently demand to know why Alaric treated her this way. But now that Alaric knew she had deliberately hidden the fact that he'd mistaken her for someone else, she no longer had the confidence to ask.
Cordelia just stood quietly beside Alaric, doing nothing, yet Janet had already been completely defeated.
At that moment, Janet looked at Cordelia with eyes full of jealousy, hatred, and envy. She bit her lip hard. Even though she was unwilling to accept it, she understood that she had completely lost her chance with Alaric. She had no opportunity whatsoever.
If she kept trying to make her presence felt, Alaric would definitely come down on her even harder.
Alaric's eyes turned cold as he asked in a low voice,
"Did she make an appointment yesterday to pick up the outfit today?"
The sales assistant shook her head gently. "No."
If Alaric hadn't asked, the sales assistant would never have offended any customer. But since he had asked, she naturally didn't dare offend him.
With her lie exposed,, Janet's face turned deathly pale, and she practically fled the store.
Cordelia glanced at Janet's retreating figure, then looked sideways at Alaric. She hoped to see some change in his expression, but Alaric didn't even glance at Janet's back. Instead, he took the suit from the sales assistant and held it up for comparison.
"Looks really nice. Want to try it on?"
Unable to detect any change in Alaric's expression, Cordelia lowered her gaze and nodded slightly. "Okay."
The sales assistant took the outfit from Alaric and led Cordelia to the fitting room.
As Cordelia followed and was about to enter, Alaric reached out and took the handbag from her hand.
"I'll hold it for you."
Hearing this, Cordelia handed her handbag to Alaric. After taking it, Alaric sat down on the sofa to wait.
When Evelyn arrived and saw Alaric sitting on the sofa in the store with Cordelia's handbag beside him, she raised an eyebrow slightly and sat down on the sofa across from him.
"Don't you have something important to attend to? What are you doing here?"
Luminary Ventures Group had a last-minute meeting. Evelyn had specifically rushed over from the Stone Group, only to find that Alaric wasn't in the conference room.
The Hughes Group had sent an unknown representative, saying that Mr. Hughes had other important matters and couldn't make it, and that everything would follow her arrangements.
She had thought the Hughes Group had something more urgent going on, but it turned out he had come here instead.
Confronted by Evelyn's questioning, Alaric showed no guilt or embarrassment. Instead, he spoke politely and graciously, "Thank you for your trouble, Ms. Stone."
His polite remark made it hard for Evelyn to hold it against him.
Evelyn just hummed in acknowledgment and looked away.
Cordelia changed into the suit in the fitting room and stepped out.
Seeing Evelyn sitting on the sofa, appearing at odds with Alaric, a hint ofconfusion flashed in Cordelia's eyes.
"Evelyn, how does this look?"
Hearing Cordelia's voice, Evelyn turned to look at her.
"Beautiful."
Cordelia's appearance and temperament were perfectly suited to light-colored suits.
Evelyn got up from the sofa and walked over to help Cordelia adjust the shirt, asking quietly.
"Did you tell Alaric you were here?"
Cordelia shook her head.
"No. I just said I was going shopping with you this afternoon and couldn't pick him up, so he should drive himself to the Stone Manor. Why?"
Hearing Cordelia's words, Evelyn understood that Alaric had checked her schedule.
"Nothing. I just didn't expect him to show up so quickly."
Hearing Evelyn's words, Cordelia pressed her lips together.
Was Evelyn mocking Alaric?
After helping Cordelia adjust her outfit, Evelyn said softly, "Pretty good, suits you well."
Seeing that Evelyn had been helping her the whole time without picking out any clothes for herself, Cordelia asked, "What about yours?"
Evelyn replied, "Mine's already ordered. I just need to pick it up today."
"You rarely wear formal wear,so I specifically brought you here to choose some. You look quite good in formal wear. Pick out a few more sets."
Cordelia declined, "No need. I rarely wear them anyway."
Evelyn glanced in Alaric's direction and said coolly,
"Someone's eager to pay anyway. Since he wants to pursue you now, you should make him pay back everything you deserved during your marriage."
Hearing Evelyn's words, Cordelia smiled softly and asked, "Did he offend you today?"
Evelyn answered coolly, "He's been offending me ever since he married you and failed to cherish you."
Cordelia pressed her lips together lightly.
In the end, Evelyn picked out several casual blazers for Cordelia—less formal and suitable for daily wear.
Alaric obediently paid the bil and was more than happy to carry the shopping bags and Cordelia's handbag.
Since his right hand hadn't healed yet, he could only carry everything with his left hand.
When Robert arrived and saw Alaric carrying things in his left hand, he immediately came over to help.
Alaric handed the shopping bags to Robert but kept Cordelia's handbag in his own hand the entire time.
When all was said and done, Cordelia had hit the jackpot, Alaric was a few thousand dollars lighter, Evelyn was grinning from ear to ear, and poor Robert looked like a pack mule carrying all those shopping bags.
