Chapter 47 CHAPTER FOURTY SEVEN

Chapter 47 CHAPTER FOURTY SEVEN
Alyssa

The first thing I felt when I woke up was the soreness It was everywhere. A deep pleasant ache in muscles I forgot I had.

True to Ares's words my body was reminding me of every single moment from last night.

I stretched slowly as a small smile touching my lips before I could stop it.

The bed was empty beside me when I woke up but his scent was still on the pillows It made my heart do a funny little flip.

Fuck! I shouldn’t be feeling this way.

I managed to get out of bed after mustering up the little energy left in me with my movements a little slow and careful I got dressed for work, choosing another decent pantsuit.

I walked downstairs my heels clicking softly.

I saw Marcus first he was on the phone talking quietly then my eyes landed on Ares who was leaning against the wall behind Marcus holding two coffee mugs and as his eyes met mine the second I stepped into the room.

And he smirked.

A knowing proud and completely arrogant smirk.

Fucking pervert!

My cheeks instantly felt like they were on fire and I looked away quickly saving myself the embarrassment.

Marcus finished his call and turned to me. "Good morning Alyssa. Are you... okay? You look tired."

I nodded too nervous to look at either of them properly. "Yes I'm fine It was just... a long night." I finally dared a quick glance at Ares.

He was still grinning his eyes full of mischief that I couldn’t help but send a sharp glare his way which only made his grin widen.

"Okay," Marcus said looking a little confused and unconvinced "Well the car is ready. We should discuss the quarterly reports on the way to the office."

"Good. Let's go," I said eager to get out of the house and away from Ares's distracting smirk.

We drove to work and all Marcus talked about business numbers and projections and I tried to listen I really tried so hard to but somehow my mind kept drifting back to the feel of Ares's body against mine.

Oh my god!

No!

I shouldn’t be thinking about this.

God!

What is wrong with you Alyssa?

We finally arrived at my office building after what felt like forever and as I walked down the long corridor towards my office, I heard raised voices.

"I don't care what you say I need to see her now!" It was Damon's voice loud and angry.

"Mr. Johnson I have told you Ms. White has not arrived yet! You cannot go in there!" That was my new secretary, Sarah.

She sounded stressed.

I walked closer. "What is going on here?" I asked my voice calm but firm.

Sarah turned to me, her face full of relief. "Ms. White! Thank goodness. Mr. Johnson has been here insisting on seeing you and I told him you hadn't arrived, but he didn't believe me. He tried to push past me into your office."

I looked at Damon his face was red, his eyes wild, he looked like he barely got some sleep, he looked like a mess.

"It's fine Sarah," I said giving her a small reassuring smile then I turned my cold gaze to Damon. "Mr. Johnson It seems you want to speak with me."

"Damn right I do!" he roared stepping toward me. "You can't just cut us off! You have to—"

I held up a hand cutting him off. "I don't have to do anything." I looked at Sarah. "Sarah please schedule a meeting for Mr. Johnson In four hour, he can see me then."

Damon's mouth fell open. "Four hour?! Are you joking?! I am not waiting one hour!"

"That is the only time I have available," I said my voice like ice. "If you do not wish to wait you are free to leave."

I turned my back on him and started walking toward my office door.

"Alyssa you listen to me!" he shouted from behind me. "This is not over! You can't treat me like this… you don’t treat me like trash”

I didn't turn around nor did i slow down, I just kept walking ignoring his rants while I heard Sarah telling him firmly that he would have to wait or leave.

I walked into my office and closed the door shutting out his angry voice the silence in my office so peaceful.

I sat down at my desk the soreness in my body a constant pleasant reminder of the night before.

Hell Alyssa, you have a company to run, an ex-husband to destroy, and a mysterious, smirking bodyguard or should I say fuckbody on my mind.

My thoughts came to a halt as my phone rang expecting it to be Marcus or another department head.

"Hello?" I said my voice all business.

"ALYSSA WHITE! IS IT TRUE?!"

I had to pull the phone away from my ear It was Sophia and she was yelling.

Loudly.

"Sophia? What—"

"DO NOT 'WHAT' ME!" she screamed. "THE NEWS! IT'S EVERYWHERE! 'BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS ALYSSA WHITE RETURNS FROM THE DEAD TO RECLAIM EMPIRE'! THAT'S YOU! THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT YOU!"

I sighed leaning back in my chair. I had been expecting this call. "Sophia, calm down."

""calm down? calm down? how can i calm down? my best friend the girl i shared a tiny apartment with in college, the one who ate instant noodles with me for a week because we were broke is apparently a billionaire and she never thought to tell me!"

"Sophia please let me explain just listen to me first” I tried.

"explain? you think you can explain this? for seven years alyssa! seven years you were married to that jerk and you let him and his messed up family treat you like trash when you could erase them from existence in a snap of a finger but you didn't and you never told me, i thought we were friends!"

"We are friends!" I said my own voice rising. "That's why I didn't tell you, I wanted a normal life I wanted a friend who liked me for me not for my money! I wanted to be just Alyssa! Not Alyssa White, the heiress!"

There was a moment of silence on the other end before her voice came back quieter but still shaking with emotion. "You really didn't trust me?"

"It wasn't about trust Sophia," I said my voice softening. "It was about... me. I was running from who I was and I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I didn't tell you… there are times I wanted to tell you but i never got the courage to."

She was quiet for another long moment. "You have a lot of explaining to do. A LOT.”

"I know," I said. "I know I do and I will I promise. How about lunch? Tomorrow? My treat. I'll tell you everything."

"You're buying the most expensive thing on the menu," she grumbled but I could hear the smile in her voice. "And dessert… you are not getting out of this."

"I wouldn't dream of it," I said, smiling for real now. "Tomorrow. I'll send my driver to come pick you up."

"Okay,"
