Chapter 78 Ruthless couple

Chapter 78 Ruthless couple

The guard lowered his head. “We did, but she was knocked down by a truck. Her condition is critical, and the police and ambulance have already taken her remains away.”

Roger’s gaze darkened, but Karen’s expression was neutral. “I guess she got her karma,” she sighed, but Roger shook his head, feeling embittered.

“No, make sure she doesn’t die.”

Karen gazed at him, disappointment filling her heart. Was he still in love with Tonia? It was not until she heard his final words that she realized how her mind had been telling her the wrong things.

“Someone like her shouldn’t die so easily. She must suffer until she begs for death, but even then, it should be far away from her,” Roger scowled. “Aside from that, she should watch how everything she’s ever desired flies over her face without her ability to get any.”

A sigh of relief escaped Karen, but she knew there was no way Tonia would suffer so much if she were to live. Her parents would protect her.

“That would be nice, but sadly, her parents would take good care of her.”

Roger did not think so from the way Tonia’s conversation with her mother went. “Kitten, didn’t you hear your mother’s response on the phone when she called?”

“Katherine isn’t my mother. She already disowned me,” Karen argued, and Roger corrected himself. “Sorry, I mean, her mother. She sounded rather disinterested in her well-being.”

Karen thought it was a ploy from both sides, but now, she was beginning to think otherwise. “You think so?”

Roger smiled. “There is only one way to find out. Why not call and inform her that her daughter is dead? Or do you want me to do it?”

Thinking it through, Karen wanted to do it, but Tonia’s phone, which she had left behind, began ringing. Seeing the number of the housekeeper, she answered but did not speak immediately.

“Tonia, is that you? I knew you weren’t the one they were talking about on the news, but where are you? I know you hate me now, but I’m your mother. Come home, and let’s talk things out. We need to get enough before the Fletchers go completely bankrupt.”

Karen was stunned, feeling a lump in her throat, and unable to utter a word. “What’s going on?” Roger asked worriedly. Karen ended the call and turned to face him.

“I agree, let them keep an eye on Tonia and make sure she gets well. There are some unresolved mysteries.”

Roger wanted to know more but sent the guard away first. “Go. I want to know everything that’s happening with her at the hospital.”

After he left, Karen began to explain the details to Roger, forgetting the two men sitting in front of them.

“Mom and dad never told me Tonia was adopted, but I found the documents when I was a teenager. However, from the way they treated her better than me, I began to fear I was the adopted one.”

Roger had suspected it too and was wondering why Karen was bringing it up now. “What did she say?”

“From what I remember, the documents showed that Tonia’s parents had died in a fire on their farm, but from what I just heard, our housekeeper is her real mother.”

“Wow, this is just getting better and better,” Roger exclaimed, wondering if the Fletchers knew about this but quickly caught on. “Then your mother’s response makes sense. She must have found out somehow.”

Karen agreed with him. “Too late. I guess they wouldn’t have adopted her if they knew her real mother was alive, but to me, this changes nothing. All along, I was their only biological daughter, but they loved the adopted one more.”

Bitterness tinged her tone, but Roger caressed her thigh gently under the table. “You have me now, Kitten.”

Karen smiled. “I know.” Tonia’s phone continued to ring, and she was about to switch it off when she saw a familiar name calling. Loretta. For some reason, she answered it, “Ah, Tonia, you had me worried sick. How did it go? Did Mr. Dawson dump her yet?”

Karen mischievously burst her bubble. “Sorry to disappoint you, Loretta, Roger and I are still very much married, and your little trick failed. You should be concerned about what your little stunt has gotten Tonia into.”

There was a long pause at the end of the line. “Karen, how do you have Tonia’s phone?”

Karen smiled and replied, “I think you should check the news, and since I now know about your involvement, I should make your stinky, poverty-stricken life even more unbearable,” she said coldly, and the line died immediately.

Roger smiled, but the two men were filled with fear. They perceived Mr. and Mrs. Dawson as a ruthless couple.

“Uhm,” Ryan cleared his throat, catching the attention of both couples as he said hastily. “We shall take our leave now.”

Just as he rose to his feet, Roger recalled their previous conversation and asked him, “Yes, you mentioned someone,” he paused, recollecting the name. “Destiny, trying to harm my wife. Who is he?”
