Chapter 72 A completely different person
At the RD Group, Roger stared at his wife in astonishment as she revealed her surprise. There were so many questions he couldn’t hold back, so he called his father.“Roger, why are you calling me so late?” Giovanni son’s sleepy voice echoed from the other end of the line, but Roger wasn’t sorry for waking him up.
Countless times, his father had done the same to him in urgent matters. However, he moved away from Karen and Tonia, walking to the French windows. His voice was low as he gazed at the night lights resembling stars over the city of Manhattan.
“Dad, what exactly did you do to my wife? She’s like a completely different person.”
On the other end of the line, Giovanni was cuddling his wife, and though annoyed by the call, he Dawsensed there was more. “Are you still at work?”
Roger responded with a hum, “aha,” as Giovanni continued, “if you can’t handle the woman I’ve made your wife become, then you aren’t as capable as I thought,” he yawned, and Roger smiled.
“In fact, I’m rather appreciative. Ryan and Max resigned, so I had to sort things out myself before we find their replacements,” he explained, omitting Karen’s help, but as expected, Giovanni brought it up.
“Those fools, but I believe Karen helped, right?”
“Dad, so it’s you. Did you or Uncle Hank teach her to hack? Can you believe she completely destroyed Silent Chase with one virus? She even added a fine of ten billion to it.”
A chuckle escaped Giovanni at the end of the line as he spoke in a hushed tone to not wake his wife. “I only helped her build on what she already knew. Perhaps you should organize a surprise for her.”
He wasn’t surprised by what Karen had become. Even Molly, who was the softest, would show no mercy when attacked.
Giovanni didn’t provide details, but Roger suddenly caught a glimpse of what would make Karen happier and how he could win her back completely.
“I think I understand, but I’ll have to wait until she’s done with her exams. She already sacrificed a lot for us tonight.”
A proud smile lifted the corner of Giovanni’s lips as he spoke in a low tone. “She’s an asset, Roger, and I hope you don’t mess up again.”
After everything, Roger was just realizing that his father had never been against him.
His taking Karen away was only to make Roger a better person, and given the distance, Karen was able to sharpen her skills, and Roger, his emotions.
“Never dad, Karen is the woman I don’t deserve, and I’ll make sure she lives an enviable life like you do for mom.”
How blind he was before, but thanks to his father, he could see clearly. All those months working with the Fletchers, and yet, he couldn’t identify that Karen was much more than he always saw her to be.
“Now that’s my son, and that reminds me. Your uncle and I have decided to transfer our companies under your name, and you can manage them under one umbrella.”
Roger would have loved this if he wasn’t married, but now, it wasn’t something of interest to him. “Dad, that will be too much.” His only concern would be in having time for his little wife, but as it stands, Giovanni was not willing to give in to his refusal, reminding him,
“We did the same for you, so why can’t you do the same for us? Don’t worry. As soon as your siblings and cousins are capable, you can transfer everything to them.”
Indeed, Giovanni had managed the RD Group for over a decade with Hank’s help, and now, these middle-aged men needed time to themselves as they were past their mid-fifties.
“And what are you supposed to be doing?” Roger asked curiously, envy swimming through him. This was the time he wanted with his wife.
Everything Tonia had wanted, he wanted to give Karen and even more. “Enjoying cappuccino as you watch the sunrise in the Grand Canyon or relaxing at the beach with mom in Hawaii?”
Giovanni chuckled, glad Roger caught up. “All of that and even more. I sacrificed everything for you, and it’s high time you do the same for me. You have Karen, and trust me, she’s tougher than you think, except her heart.”
She kind of failed him in that aspect, but the most important thing was the fact that Roger had changed. Left to Giovanni alone, Karen shouldn’t have given Roger a chance so quickly, but the changes he saw in Roger were satisfying.
“Alright, but you have to wait until she completes her exams, and thanks, dad, for everything. I don’t know what I would have done if those men had harmed her or if someone else had helped her.”
Knowing Karen, she would have done anything out of gratitude for whoever helped her, and thank God it was his father and not Wade or anyone else like he feared the first time he saw Wade with Karen.
"Since you mentioned those men, what are you going to do with Tonia? You can’t let her get away, will you?"
