Chapter 57 Have you fallen for him again?
Wade stared at Karen. There was something different about her, something he could not put a finger on. Was it Roger? Things didn’t seem to be going well between them.
“I couldn’t order for you because I didn’t know what you’d like,” he sipped his coffee and stared at her with interest. Karen smiled.
“No, I already had breakfast so I’m fine.”
Wade nodded and placed his cup on the table with a gentle touch. His movements were smooth, but Karen found Roger’s movements elegant.
She couldn’t understand why she found herself thinking about him a lot these few days. He seemed to be just everywhere around her.
In the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, garden, the list was endless, but nothing surprised her like Wade’s question. “Are you and Roger back together?”
It was as if he knew who she was thinking about but couldn’t help wondering why such a young woman was already married and having issues, whereas the question seemed intrusive to Karen.
Her relationship with Roger was still undefined, but it wasn’t something she wanted to discuss with a third person, and definitely not the opposite sex. Also, even if Roger failed to pass her test, Wade wasn’t someone she would want to consider.
He could be her friend, but that would just be it. Their preferences would vary because the entertainment industry wasn’t really her thing. “Yes, Roger and I are back together, and we are happy.”
His teeth gritted together as he forced a smile. It was time for him to end any hopes of being with her. It was what he thought before, but when she agreed to meet him, it gave him high hopes.
“I’m happy for you, Karen. I really am.”
“In that case, you should hand over the gifts to me,” Karen demanded politely, but Wade couldn’t take his gaze off her. This was the first time he met a woman who looked classy without a ‘sex’ appeal.
She was what he would call graceful, and that made her uniquely attractive. Besides, she looked more mature and responsible than he saw her at the club or even at the dinner party.
It seems to him that the Dawsons never lose. His parents lost to Giovanni and Molly, and now he also lost to Roger, his former classmate.
He still owed them thanks for not eliminating him when they could and for not only getting him help but paying for it and ensuring he was safe and well catered for.
“At the party, there was a girl, Therese, is her name. Can you give me her number?”
Karen couldn’t believe he lured her for a meeting for some girl, but what made him think she knew the girl merely because she showed up at the party?
The clock was ticking, and she didn’t want to disappoint Roger by being late, so she asked eagerly, “Can you describe this girl in question?”
A smile stretched Wade’s lips. Therese was so nice and accommodating, but he didn’t take her number because he still had eyes on Karen. So stupid of him to think he would stand a chance when Roger set his eyes on something.
“She was dressed in Dawson’s couture, wavy blonde hair, and stunning amber eyes.”
Karen inhaled when she caught a whiff of the person. Delani looked a lot like Molly the morning she saw her, but at the party, her dressing gave her a different vibe, completely disconnecting her from the latter.
However, her smart brain told her that if Delanie gave Wade a fake name, then she must also be under disguise. It was just overwhelming how the Dawsons liked to fake it until they get what they want.
“I was invited to the party too, and the only person I knew was the invitee and the people I went with. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of help.”
Disappointment sat in Wade’s eyes as he murmured, “thanks for agreeing to see me anyways.”
“And the gifts?”
“Oh, that,” Wade sighed. “I signed it in for you at the party.”
Karen wanted to punch him in the face for wasting her time, but how come no one mentioned it? Roger didn’t seem like he received his gift. “Are you sure? I never received a thank you.”
The family might not do it themselves, but that’s why there were organizers. “Oh, please don’t blame me. I used Mavis because I didn’t know what your real name was.” Seeing Karen’s face harden, Wade pleaded, “you aren’t blaming me, are you?”
Karen couldn’t. It was her fault for hiding her identity. “In that case, I’ll take my leave now, and thanks for the coffee.”
Wade watched her leave, unable to keep his eyes off her until she was out of view. Karen looked so young, and he doubted she was more than twenty, yet there was just something about her. Something he never saw the first and second time he saw her, but now it was time to say goodbye.
The chauffeur opened the door for Karen, and as soon as she sat, she made a call, which was answered on the second ring.
“Karen, is Roger causing trouble?” Worry stretched Giovanni’s voice, but Karen smiled.
No wonder she found Giovanni’s mannerisms and eyes similar to that of Roger. They were related after all. “On the contrary, he’s proving himself useful. I’m honestly surprised that he’s changed so much.”
Giovanni smiled at the end of the line, swirling a ballpoint pen around his finger. “Roger is an amazing kid, and you never saw this side of him because he never loved you. So, have you fallen for him again?”
