Chapter 228 She Is My Wife

Chapter 228 She Is My Wife

Liam hummed in his sleep but didn't wake up.

Sean put him down on the small bed nearby, tucked him in, and straightened the pillow he'd kicked crooked. Then he went back to the big bed, lifted the covers, lay down, and pulled Susan into his arms.

Her body was warm and soft, carrying a faint scent that was the most familiar smell to him.

Susan sensed the familiar presence in her sleep and instinctively snuggled closer to him. She found a comfortable spot, rested her head on his chest, draped one arm over his waist, and went back to sleep.

The next morning.

When Liam woke up, he found himself lying on a big unfamiliar bed. He looked around and realized he was in his mom's room. He got out of bed, slipped on his shoes, and ran to his own room. Seeing his mom still asleep, he ran downstairs, put his hands on his hips, and shouted, "Dad! You're cheating!"

Sean glanced at him slowly, his tone lazy. "What's wrong?"

"You did it again! You carried me away in the middle of the night and slept with Mom yourself!" Liam said angrily. "You're such a big cheater!"

Sean kept working on what he was doing and said seriously, "Liam, you're growing up. You need to learn to be independent. Boys can't keep sleeping with their mom, you know?"

Liam's eyes widened. "Then why don't you be independent? You're way bigger than me, and you still sleep with Mom!"

He pointed at Sean's nose, his little face looking extremely serious.

"She's my wife," Sean said confidently. "Of course I can sleep with her."

Liam was speechless. He stood there, his face turning bright red, unable to say a word for a long time. His mouth opened and closed, opened and closed, like a fish thrown onto land.

He looked around, dragged a small chair over from outside, climbed up on it, stood on it, put his hands on his hips, and looked down at Sean. Then he announced loudly, "When I grow up, I'm gonna marry Mom and make her my wife! Then I can sleep with Mom too!"

Sean's face turned dark as a pot bottom. He grabbed Liam off the chair, and without another word, his big hand came down hard on Liam's butt.

Smack!

The sound was especially crisp in the quiet kitchen.

"Who are you marrying?" Sean's voice was low, but every word sounded like it was squeezed out through his teeth.

Smack!

Another one.

"Say that again?" His hand lifted once more.

Smack!

The third hit.

"You still dare to say it?" Sean's hand stayed in the air, waiting for Liam's answer.

At first Liam gritted his teeth and held it in, his face turning bright red, his lips pressed tight. But this time Sean had really used force, not the usual light warning taps. After a few hits, his little butt stung badly, and tears suddenly poured out. These tears were real, not the forced kind from last night—they came from the pain.

"Waa... Mom! Mom, help!" Liam finally couldn't hold it anymore and cried out loudly.

This time he was really crying. His hands flailed in the air, trying to grab something.

Susan had just gotten up, her hair still messy and her eyes still sleepy, but the moment she heard Liam's crying, she woke up completely. She hurried downstairs into the kitchen and snatched Liam out of Sean's hands, holding him tight.

"Sean! What are you hitting the kid for?" Susan's voice was anxious and angry.

Liam wrapped his arms around Susan's neck, sobbing so hard he could barely breathe. "Mom... Dad hit me... It hurts... My butt really hurts..."

His tears soaked a big patch on Susan's shoulder, and his whole body shook with sobs.

Susan felt so bad for him. She patted his back to comfort him and turned to glare at Sean. "You're a grown man, why are you arguing with a five-year-old? Can't you just talk nicely? What if you hurt him with that strength of yours?"

Sean stood there, his face dark. His palm actually felt a bit numb—he had used real force. But this kid needed to be taught a lesson.

"Ask him what he just said."

Susan turned to Liam. "Liam, what did you just say?"

Liam cried in hiccups and mumbled, "I said... I said when I grow up I'm gonna marry Mom and make her my wife..."

Susan froze for a second, then looked caught between laughing and crying. She glanced at her son crying like a mess in her arms, then at Sean whose face was black as a pot, not sure whether to be mad or amused.

"Some things he doesn't understand yet because he's little, but you still have to teach him," Sean said coldly, arms crossed.

Susan took a deep breath, carried Liam to the bed, sat down, and put him on her lap. She used her sleeve to wipe his tears gently, bit by bit.

"Liam, stop crying. Listen to Mom."

Liam looked at her with red, teary eyes, like a little rabbit, tears still clinging to his lashes and falling with every blink.

"Mom is your mom. You can't marry Mom and make her your wife," Susan said seriously, her voice gentle but firm.

"Why?" Liam asked, looking wronged.

"Because Mom and Dad are already together. And Mom is your mom—there's a family relationship between you two, so you can't get married." Susan tried to explain in a way a kid could understand, then added, "Just like you can't marry Grandma or Grandma on the other side, you know?"

Liam blinked, like he got it a little but not completely. His little brows furrowed as he tried to process Mom's words.

"Then... when I grow up, if Mom becomes someone else, can she marry me then?" Liam tilted his head and asked, still with a bit of hope in his eyes.

Susan didn't expect her son's logic to go that way. "No. Mom will always be your mom. That won't change."

"What if I stop calling you Mom? Then you won't be my mom anymore, and you can marry me, right?" Liam asked innocently, blinking his clear eyes.

"That doesn't work either. Once you're a mom, you're a mom for life."

Liam listened, his little face scrunching up in distress. His mouth pouted, but this time he didn't cry. He just looked sulky.

He thought for a long while before muttering, "Then how can I marry Mom?"

"You can't, no matter what," Susan said firmly, leaving no room for hope.

"Then I can't sleep with Mom either?" Liam asked again, his voice getting smaller.
