Chapter 83

Christian’s heart pounded in his chest as he watched the video call. His hands trembled as he watched his wife’s face. The past few hours had been an agonizing blur of fear and uncertainty, as Victoria lay unconscious in the hospital, poisoned by a deadly toxin.

Finally, the screen flickered to life, and there she was, her pale face bathed in the soft glow of the hospital room. Christian let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding. Victoria’s eyes fluttered open, and a weak smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

“I’m okay, Christian,” she whispered, her voice barely above a hoarse whisper. “The antidote worked. I’m going to be fine.”

Relief flooded through Christian’s veins, washing away the fear and dread that had consumed him. He knew there was still a long road ahead for Victoria’s recovery, but for now, all that mattered was that she was alive.

As he watched his wife on the screen, a cold anger began to simmer within him. The people who had tried to kill her would pay dearly for their actions. Christian turned to his men, his eyes cold and steely.

“Kill them all,” he ordered, his voice devoid of emotion. “Spare no one.”

His men nodded in grim agreement, knowing better than to question their leader’s commands. Christian didn’t want to see the faces of those who had tried to take his wife away from him, to rob him of the woman he loved more than life itself.

Without a second glance, Christian turned and left the warehouse, the echoing cries of the people inside fading into the distance. He climbed into his car and sped off towards the hospital, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tight his knuckles turned white.

As he drove, tears welled up in his eyes, blurring his vision. The reality of how close he had come to losing Victoria hit him like a sledgehammer. He couldn’t imagine a world without her, couldn’t bear the thought of facing life alone. He didn't know how he would be able to face his children and tell them that their mother had died and that it was all his fault.

When he finally reached the hospital, Christian’s heart was pounding in his chest. He rushed to Victoria’s room, the familiar beep of machines and the antiseptic smell of the hospital washing over him.

Victoria lay in the hospital bed, her eyes flickering open at his arrival. She reached out a hand to him, a weak smile on her face.

“I’m so sorry, Christian,” she whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. “I never meant for any of this to happen, I should have known that Anna was not my sister, you doubted at first and even Serena tried to expose her so many times but I didn't listen”

Christian took her hand in his, his heart breaking at the pain in her eyes. He knew Victoria had been dragged into this mess against her will, a pawn in a deadly game he never wanted her to be a part of.

“It’s not your fault, Victoria,” he said, his voice choked with emotion. “I’m just grateful you’re alive.”

And as he looked into Victoria’s eyes, filled with gratitude and love, Christian knew that he would do whatever it takes to keep her safe, no matter the cost.

Serena hadn’t stopped sobbing since she saw Victoria open her eyes. She couldn’t believe how close she had come to losing her best friend, her sister in all but blood. As Ethan held her tight, comforting her, she felt a wave of relief wash over her as Victoria weakly laughed and joked with her.

“Come on, Serena, I’m the one who nearly died, but you’re the one crying,” Victoria teased, her voice still hoarse from the ordeal she had just survived. Serena couldn’t help but smile through her tears, grateful beyond words that her friend was finally okay.

Christian stood by her side, his eyes never leaving her face. He was thankful that his wife had defeated the poison that had almost claimed her life, but he couldn’t shake the fear that had gripped him during those long hours when she had been clinging to life by a thread.

As Victoria began to regain her strength, the four of them spent long hours together in the hospital room, reminiscing about old times and sharing their hopes and dreams for the future. Serena and Ethan were a constant presence, providing support and comfort to their friends as they navigated the emotional aftermath of the near-tragedy.

In the days that followed, Serena found herself admiring Christian, she found herself respecting him even, the way he loved her friend made her heart swell. There was a depth to him, a vulnerability that he had never shown before, and she couldn’t help but applaud him.

As Victoria slowly recovered in the days that followed, Christian sat by her side, recounting everything that had happened. The betrayal, the deception, the danger that had threatened to tear them apart. But through it all, their love had prevailed, stronger than ever.

They vowed to put this nightmare behind them, to move forward and leave the darkness of the past behind. And as they held each other close, Christian knew that no matter what the future held, as long as they were together, they could face anything.

As Victoria regained her strength, Christian made plans to take her home. He knew their children had been worried sick about their mother, especially Luke. He was the most perceptive, always quick to pick up on the subtlest of cues. Christian dreaded having to explain to them why their mother had been away for so long, but he knew it was time to face the truth.

When they arrived home, Olivia and Maya greeted Victoria with tears of joy and relief. They hugged her tightly, whispering words of love and gratitude. Luke, however, hung back, his eyes betraying a mix of emotions. Christian could see the pain and anger in his son’s gaze, knowing that Luke had figured out the truth long before they had the chance to tell him.

As they sat down together in the living room, Christian took a deep breath and began to explain everything that had happened. He told them about Victoria’s sudden illness, the frantic rush to the hospital, and the long and agonizing days spent waiting for any sign of improvement. He told them about the sleepless nights and the tough decisions they had to make, all while trying to shield them from the harsh reality of their mother’s condition and what led her to her sudden sickness.

Tears welled up in Victoria’s eyes as she listened to Christian speak. She reached out to Luke, trying to find the right words to comfort him. But he pulled away, his face a mask of hurt and betrayal. Christian felt a pang in his heart, knowing that he had let his son down by keeping the truth from him.

Luke finally broke his silence, his voice trembling with emotion. “Why didn’t you tell me, Dad?” he whispered, his eyes pleading for an answer.

Christian struggled to find the right words, feeling the weight of his son’s disappointment bearing down on him. “I thought... I thought I was protecting you,” he stammered, his voice breaking. “I didn’t want to worry you.”

Luke shook his head, his eyes brimming with tears. “I’m not a kid, Dad. I can handle the truth,” he choked out. “I should have been there for Mom when she needed me the most.”

Victoria reached out to her son, her eyes filled with tears. “You were always there for me, Luke,” she said softly. “You were my strength even when you didn’t realize it.”

Luke looked up at his mother, a glimmer of hope shining through his tears. He finally allowed himself to be pulled into her embrace, letting go of the hurt and anger that had consumed him. Christian felt a wave of relief wash over him, knowing that his family would heal from this ordeal together.

As the days passed, Victoria continued to regain her strength, surrounded by love and support from her family. Luke took on the role of caretaker, making sure his mother never felt alone or overwhelmed. Olivia and Maya showered Victoria with affection, grateful to have her back home where she belonged.

Christian watched his family come together in the face of adversity, feeling a sense of gratitude for the second chance they had been given. He vowed to never take their love for granted again, cherishing every moment they spent together.

In the quiet moments of the night, Christian would hold Victoria close, whispering words of love and gratitude in her ear. She would smile back at him, her eyes shining with the same devotion that had captured his heart all those years ago. They had weathered the storm together, stronger and more united than ever before.

As the days turned into weeks, Victoria’s health continued to improve, and soon she was back on her feet, her laughter filling their home once again. Luke, Olivia, and Maya reveled in the joy of having their mother back, knowing that they had come through a dark chapter in their lives, only to emerge stronger and more resilient.

And as Christian looked at his family, filled with love and hope for the future, he knew that they would always be there for each other, no matter what challenges life threw their way. They were bound by a love that was unbreakable, a love that had stood the test of time and would continue to light their way through every storm that lay ahead.
