Chapter 50

Chapter 50
Beaux began to whine at the loss of another brother, eventually beginning to howl in hopelessness. Other wolves stopped to look, giving their opponents the prime opportunity to kill them. I could not care enough to see if the ones that fell were from Moonlight or Bloodmoon.

Once we both quietened our crying, I noticed that the wounds from our fight with Alex were only small, minor ones, but they burned as they speedily healed. It was as if I could feel each one as they knitted closed, thanks to my super-duper wolf healing. My healing has always been faster than your average wolf; another sign that I came from an Alpha bloodline, I guess.

Reid, still in Gunners form, materialised before me, covered in blood from those that he had fought and killed; bits of their flesh were caught in his grubby fur. His head was dipped low as he slowly approached me, but there was nothing tender about the moment. As soon as I was in reach of him, he started pushing me hard with his head, trying to push me away from Alex’s dead body. He chuffed and snorted, showing his impatience at me not cooperating with his demands.

‘Oh, fuck off you prick.’ Beaux was not happy with his dominance, especially right now, and I had to agree.

Reid backed away, gawping at me in shock, and when I looked to Dane, he was observing me the same. I shrugged my shoulders, unsure of what the fuck these lemons were playing at.

‘Did you just mindlink me?’ Hearing Reid’s deep, husky, and bewildered voice in my head was too much. I turned to face him properly; Gunner's head was tilted in confusion, his jaw lax, and his tongue lolling out to the side.

‘What in the actual fuck? No, I...I...wasn’t supposed to. It was just Beaux cursing you, it wasn’t supposed to be...a mindlink.’  I did not know who I was speaking to now; desperation was sinking in because of what Reid had just heard and the endless possibilities of what he would do to me for it.

‘Well fuck me sideways with a pole. How can you do that? You two aren’t mated and you haven’t been accepted into the pack, so you shouldn’t be able to mindlink us.’ Dane decided to put in his two-pence, just adding fuel to the fire.

‘How the hell should I know why I can? I haven’t got crystal bollocks, so I don’t have the answers to everything.’ Panic was sweeping through me after realising that I was able to communicate with wolves outside of my pack. I must not have noticed before because I have never had the need to.

Reid’s impatience won out once again, ‘Let’s talk about this shit later. If neither of you has noticed, this isn’t exactly the right time for a casual chat.’

I watched as Gunner turned and bounded off to a small cluster of scrapping wolves; one of which seemed to be badly injured whilst trying to hold off two snapping feral fuckers.

The stench of the battlefield suddenly invaded my senses; the metallic scent was so strong, it would never completely clear from the area. The sweat and fear was bitter, but the smell of death started a gut-wrenching feeling so deep within me, I wanted to cry in sympathy for every life that was now over.

A couple of rotten-smelling rogues started prowling around me; their heads were lowered, and their hackles were raised as they circled. Alex’s lifeless body lay on the sodden ground between my enemies and me, completely disregarded by them. A smelly, frothy saliva dripped from their jaws, and blackened teeth were exposed as they viciously snarled their warnings.

I sidestepped, avoiding stones that protruded from the mixture of mud and debris blown from the woods, trying to keep both predators in my sight at the same time as much as possible. Both Beaux and I were ready for the fight, excited even to let out some of our frustrations on these pieces of scum, but we waited patiently for one of them to try attacking first.

Luckily, the smaller of the two decided to take a chance and jet off from the ground, charging at me with speed that showed exactly how poorly they lived. I feinted to the side, avoiding the miserable attempt at a tackle, just as the other wolf decided to lunge. I twisted a little too late, and his teeth clamped down onto the side of my belly and pierced through the layers of skin and muscle there.

Beaux roared angrily at the sudden burst of pain and turned enough so that she could bite at his back leg. She bit down so hard that instantly I felt and heard the bone break, but it did not make her let go. She was pissed, and she was not going to give up her prize so easily.

The wolf that Beaux had gripped onto tightly started bucking and turning, trying to break free, but it only fueled something primal within her. When the wolf fell in a heap from its desperate attempts at release, Beaux used the opportunity to move and stand on it, her front paws weighing down above the part of the bone that was still in her jaws. She bit down harder than she ever had before on anything and pulled, separating the lower leg from the rest of the body as if it she had just ripped the leg off a cooked chicken.

Blood spurted from the ragged wound that had been left behind, and torn tendons and ligaments hung amongst the muscle now exposed to the elements.

The rogue howled, garbled with panic as it desperately tried to escape my clutches, its new stump rapidly swinging around as the wolf tried to use it to get up and away, forgetting that most of the leg was now gone.

The sight marginally satisfied Beaux’s bloodlust, and her keen senses were still working in overdrive. Enough so, she spun around just in time to grab the other wolf that was still present around the muzzle and crushed it. She pulled the wolf down to the floor, let go, and started slashing at their ribs.

Beaux was driven by the idea of punishing each of the fuckers who had attacked tonight. She was continually clawing at the ribs and stomach of the rogue, as though she was digging to find a pirate's treasure. They had long since passed away, but she continued like it were the only way that she would live; to completely obliterate it.

Suddenly, a wolf charged into our side, bowling us over and away from our reward. I whipped up and around as fast as possible to face the brave bastard who had chosen the worst day to ever try and fight me, only to find that it was Reid, and he looked outraged. But no matter how livid he was, Beaux was feeling ten times worse, and she had had enough of his bullshit.

Beaux growled, ready to take on her mate, finally tipped over the edge, and ready to fuck up his pretty face.
