Chapter 38

Chapter 38
I was in shock that I was finally seeing my family, but I was not surprised to see that it was them and Beta Pete that had been causing all the trouble. I was actually quite amused that they had been giving everyone the run-around.

I could not move any further than the doorway, pausing in bewilderment. There was a dim ceiling light in here, making it much easier for me to see as I looked around and took everything in.

In the centre of the room there was a worn-down wooden table with a shitload of crimson stains and deep cuts in the wood, restraints hung down loose from all four corners, swinging slightly as they taunted of all the wolves that they have held whilst they were murdered. Next to it, a solid rusty metal chair, chains waiting empty and ready on the arms and the front legs. Strong, bulky chains hung from the ceiling, prepared to play a part of the next story that ends here. All along one wall were shelves from floor to ceiling, each of them filled with an assortment of knives, devices and bottles of herb-looking things.

Someone coughed, but only once, as if to gather someone’s attention. Typically, I looked, and I found Reid glaring at me, trying to gauge my reactions. Dane barged past, ramming my shoulder hard into the doorway so that he could get by.

“You don’t have to be so rude.” I was pushing my luck standing up to him, and I knew that he was not afraid to put me in my place through violence, but I have had enough of his grumpy arse.

Dane had already stopped moving, and whilst frozen in place he growled at me in warning, but he did not retaliate like he had the other day by striking me. I am guessing that having Reid hanging over his shoulder is what stopped him from acting on his impulses.

“Keep your thoughts to yourself, you filthy whore.” Dane finally grumbled deeply through his low growls.

“Pack it in, you fucking pair of idiots. You’re acting like a bunch of bitchy kids.” Reid cursed at us both, scolding us whilst shaking his head in frustration.

‘Fuck you, you waste of ballsacks!’ Out of nowhere, Beaux piped up with her bit to say, surprising the ever living shit out of me, but I appreciated it even more.

‘Hey, my gorgeous wolfie. I’ve missed having you around so much. I know that you’ve needed your space, and that things are a lot harder to come and speak to me now, but I hope that you remember that I am here for you, anytime that you need me. Right?’

‘I know, my human bestie, but I’ve just needed the space from this prick and everyone else in this jumped-up motherfucking hillbilly town.’

‘She’s gone.’ I let the sorrowful tidbit of information fall from my lips, still in mourning for my best friend.

‘I know. I felt Nova returning home to the Moon Goddess; she will look after them both better than this world ever could.’ Beaux had obviously felt the bond break between them, making her emotional struggles so much harder to bear.

‘I’m so sorry that I couldn’t do anything to help them. I really did want to, but those men are disgusting creatures, I didn’t want to risk them doing anything else to her just to spite me.’

‘No, no. You couldn’t have done a thing for them. It's like you just said, but those things can’t be called men, they are savage brutes, monsters even.’

‘That they are.’ I agreed with Beaux’s correction, something which did not happen very often.

I could tell by her voice that being here was ruining the need for life that the precious other half of my soul usually held. The spark within her was dying, just like our best friends had so mercilessly done just yesterday. There is more than one way to kill a living being, and the wolves in this pack knew how to do it from more than one aspect.

If it is not one day soon, then sometime in the future, I will make these wankers pay for everything that they have done to us all.

The iris of both my eyes changed from their usual colour to their sparkling gold from the rage that was being shared between Beaux and myself, and the promise that there will be epic retaliations to come. Excitement tingled throughout my body at the prospect of revenge, and serving these monsters their just-desserts.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And this she-wolf had well and truly been fucking scorned.

“You quite finished yet?”

Reid interrupted the chat that I was having with my wolf and our vow to get the best vengeance this world has ever seen before. I looked at him guiltily, like I had been caught with my hand in the cookie jar and nodded furtively before he could ask me anything further.

“Fucking women.”  He cursed quietly to himself, not giving a shit if I heard him. “Which one started this crap today?” Reid spun around to look down at the people in the cages, wrinkling his nose in disgust as he strolled past one and onto the next, never once changing the way that his tanned face twisted.

Dane stepped forward and pointed to Dad, “this one. He started kicking up a fuss, throwing our guys around after one of the others howled and broke down.”

“So, you’re the one who’s mate we killed today.” Reid stopped moving around the dreary room and straddled his feet in front of the bars that held back Beta Pete, rocking from his heels to the balls of his feet as he studied him for a reaction to his emotional jab, but there were none. The Beta somehow managed to keep his cool, he did not even acknowledge the arsehole goading him into starting something.

A couple of minutes stretched by ever so slowly in complete silence, but eventually Reid accepted that he was not going to get what he wanted from the wolf that was grieving for his mate, even when resorting to such taunting as he had. Instead, he decided to go back and forth between the two others as he contemplated which one he was going to have a try at next, the occupants of each cell watching him carefully as he did.

In the end, Reid made the decision to deal out the repercussions of Dad’s actions by moving onto Dad himself, instead of using Eli against him to get a reaction that he so liked to see, which I was kinda relieved by. I did not want to see any person that I knew suffer, but I know that my old man was seasoned in all aspects of being an Alpha compared to Eli’s inexperience, and that included managing pain in the face of your enemies when being tortured. But there was nothing that could be done to prepare a person for whatever madness Reid had planned.

“Pull that one out and string him up.” Reid’s simple sentence made my stomach begin to knot.

Dane moved quickly to the door of the cage that held Dad, the heavy boots on his feet drumming heavily on the floor as he went. The keys that he used to unlock the cell rattled and scraped against the door as he moved them about in the oxidized keyhole.

As soon as the door was opened, Dad tried to use the opportunity to try and go on the offensive for a change, but because of how he had been treated the last few days, his reactions and speeds had immensely degraded, and Dane managed to defer his feeble try and pull him out with ease. Dad was fully under his control with minimal effort and in no time at all.
