Chapter 28 - Damien's POV
Chapter 28 - Damien's POV
Watching Megan commune with the First Mother while sitting perfectly still in a medical facility was possibly the most terrifying experience of my life. Through our mate bond, I could feel her consciousness expand and shift, touching realities I couldn't even comprehend, while her physical form remained motionless on the examination table.
She's safe, Dorian insisted, though I could feel his own anxiety. The First Mother wouldn't harm the guardian or her child.
How can you be sure?
Because everything the First Mother has ever done has been to protect and guide werewolf kind. She appeared to Megan in dreams to prepare her for her role as guardian. She wouldn't intervene now unless it was necessary.
Dr. Kim's equipment was registering energy readings that shouldn't have been possible in a medical setting. Whatever conversation Megan was having with the ancient entity was affecting both her and the baby on levels we couldn't measure.
"Damien," Elena's voice came through the communications system. "We're detecting massive supernatural energy fluctuations from your location. Do you need backup?"
"Negative," I replied, not taking my eyes off Megan. "The First Mother is here. Megan's communicating with her about the baby."
The First Mother. Even through the comm system, I could hear Elena's awe. That's... unprecedented. She hasn't manifested physically in recorded history.
"Well, she's here now. And she specifically wanted to talk about our child."
The thought of what that might mean was both thrilling and terrifying. The First Mother didn't involve herself in mortal affairs lightly. If she felt the need to speak directly with Megan about the pregnancy, it meant our child was even more significant than we'd realized.
Which also means they'll be even more of a target, I thought grimly.
Through our bond, I felt Megan's consciousness returning, her awareness settling back into her physical form. Her eyes opened, and the first thing she did was look at me with an expression that held new knowledge and deeper understanding.
"How long was I gone?" she asked.
"Gone?" I was confused. "You never left. You just went very still for about thirty seconds, and your energy signature spiked beyond measurement."
She experienced much more than thirty seconds, I realized. Time moved differently wherever she went.
"What did she tell you?" Dr. Kim asked, her medical scanner still beeping with readings that defied explanation.
I watched Megan consider her answer, seeing her process whatever revelations she'd received during her conversation with the First Mother.
"She told me that our child is going to help heal the supernatural world," she said finally. "But that there are forces awakening that will try to stop them."
More threats. Of course.
But also confirmation that what we're building is important, Dorian pointed out. Important enough for the First Mother to intervene directly.
More enemies, I said through our bond, my mind already racing with security implications.
But also more allies, Megan replied. Every entity we reform, every connection we build, makes our child safer.
The logic was sound, but the protective father in me wanted to wrap my family in every possible defense and hide them away until the baby was born safe and healthy. The rational Alpha knew that wasn't possible—not with cosmic integration projects to manage and hostile entities to contain.
"Dr. Kim," I said, "given what just happened, what are your recommendations for the remainder of the pregnancy?"
"Enhanced monitoring, obviously. But beyond that..." She spread her hands helplessly. "Damien, we're dealing with a pregnancy that's being influenced by the most powerful supernatural entity in existence. I'm not sure standard medical protocols apply anymore."
Standard anything doesn't apply to our family, Dorian observed wryly.
No kidding.
My phone buzzed with an urgent message from Marcus: Three more sites showing accelerated activity. The entities seem to be responding to whatever just happened at your location.
I showed the message to Megan, watching her expression grow more serious as she processed the implications.
"The First Mother's manifestation triggered reactions at the other containment sites," she said. "The entities are all connected somehow, and her presence here sent ripples through the entire network."
Which means we need to move faster with the integration and containment protocols.
And we need to be prepared for the possibility that some entities might break containment early.
"Elena," I said into the comm system, "we need an immediate status report from all seventeen sites. The First Mother's appearance seems to have triggered responses across the entire network."
Copy that. Dispatching teams now.
As we prepared to leave the medical facility and return to crisis management, I helped Megan down from the examination table, my hands automatically moving to support her growing belly.
How are you feeling? I asked through our bond.
Overwhelmed. Determined. Terrified for our child's future but also hopeful about what they might accomplish.
Normal parental emotions, then.
If there's anything normal about our situation.
Dr. Kim handed us a tablet with the latest scan results. "The baby's development continues to accelerate, but all indicators suggest healthy growth. Whatever the First Mother shared with you, it doesn't seem to have negatively affected the pregnancy."
"If anything, the baby seems more active," Megan observed, placing her hand where a particularly energetic movement was occurring. "Like they're excited about something."
Maybe they understood the conversation too, I thought. Maybe they already know what their purpose will be.
The idea of our unborn child having that level of awareness was both amazing and slightly unsettling. How do you prepare to parent a being who might understand their cosmic destiny before they're even born?
One day at a time, I decided. We handle each challenge as it comes, and we make sure our child knows they're loved and supported no matter what abilities they inherit.
As we left the medical facility and prepared to return to the integration project headquarters, I made a silent promise to our unborn child.
Whatever forces are awakening because of your existence, whatever threats emerge because of your potential, you will never face them alone. Your mother and I will stand with you, our pack will protect you, and the allies we're building will ensure you have the support you need to choose your own destiny.
That's a big promise, Dorian observed.
Then we'd better be big enough to keep it.
The cosmic integration project was about to become even more critical than we'd realized.
And our child was at the center of it all.
