One Hundred & Forty One
One Hundred & Forty One
One year later
Amara’s morning had started like any other… coffee, a little stretching, and Darius hovering in the kitchen like a caffeinated hawk. But by mid-morning, things changed fast. A sharp, sudden contraction hit, and she screamed.
Darius, who had never seen her scream like that before, practically jumped ten feet in the air. “What the hell was that?!” he yelled, eyes wide, knocking over a vase in his panic.
“Darius! I… I think it’s time!” Amara yelled, clutching her stomach.
Time? Time?! He looked around the living room like it had betrayed him. “Time?! You mean… NOW?! bloody… hell. We didn’t even pack the hospital bag!”
“Yes, NOW!” she hissed, glaring at him through the pain.
Darius grabbed her hand, nearly pulling her into the car before she could sit down. “We’re… we’re… gonna… have… a… baby?!” he stammered, his voice rising with each word. “Amara! How do you… why didn’t you…?!”
She laughed through tears of pain and panic. “Oh I forgot to tell you we are having twins!”
His jaw dropped. “Twins?! We are having twins?! When?! How did you know?”
“About nine months ago,” she groaned, glaring at him as another contraction hit. “I think we should focus on getting to the hospital now.”
The ride to the hospital was… something. Darius alternated between shouting directions, holding her hand, and muttering, “I’m not ready for this. I’m not ready. Oh God. We’re having babies. Twin babies. Oh no. Twin babies!”
At the hospital, the chaos only increased. Darius tried to help Amara into the labor room but somehow managed to get tangled in the IV line, knock over a tray of medical tools, and step on a nurse’s foot all at once. Amara, in the middle of contractions, had to stop herself from laughing and crying at the same time.
Once she was finally settled in the labor room, Darius hovered at her side like an anxious storm cloud. “Okay,” he said, gripping her hand so tightly she swore she could feel her pulse in his knuckles. “We can do this. You, me… twins… easy peasy.”
Amara rolled her eyes. “Easy peasy? Darius, I’m about to push two humans out of my body!”
“Breathe honey , breathe!” he said, pacing the room. “Do we… do we need…? Wait… what do I do with the umbilical cord?!”
“We’ve got the doctor for that!” she snapped, smirking despite herself.
Hours later, after enough screaming, grunting, and Darius panicking to fill a small novel, the first baby arrived… a boy, squalling with a full head of dark hair.
Darius’s face went blank. “It’s… it’s a… baby… a baby boy… ours?”
“Yes, ours!” Amara said, exhausted but laughing through tears.
Then, just as Darius was finally catching his breath, the second baby… a girl was delivered.
He froze. “A girl… oh my God, a girl… twins… our twins…” His voice was somewhere between awe and terror. “We… we’re responsible for… double trouble?”
Amara laughed weakly, still gripping his hand. “Congratulations, Daddy,” she said, a mischievous glint in her tired eyes. “You’re officially outnumbered.”
Darius looked at the tiny humans, then at Amara, then back at the twins. He swallowed hard. “Okay… okay… this is… amazing… terrifying… and I’m… so in love.”
Amara shook her head, smiling through exhaustion. “Welcome to parenthood, honey. Get ready for the chaos.”
He nodded solemnly, trying to look brave, though everyone in the room could see he was already planning his escape route. “Chaos? Ha… chaos is my middle name now,” he muttered, hugging both her and the tiny babies carefully, as if they were priceless treasures… because, in every sense, they were.
And with that, the new chapter of their lives began… loud, messy, and filled with love, laughter, and just the right amount of panic.
The first week at home was… chaotic.
Darius tried to “help” with the twins, which mostly involved him pacing around the nursery, reading baby manuals upside down, and asking a thousand questions. “Do they… do they eat like this? Or like this?” he muttered, holding a bottle as if it were a ticking bomb.
Amara, exhausted from sleepless nights and endless feedings, could only roll her eyes. “Honey… they’re fine. You’re fine. Just… stop overthinking and let me do something for five minutes.”
He froze mid-step, a bottle in one hand, a pacifier in the other. “Fine… fine. But what if I mess up? What if—”
“You won’t,” she said softly, reaching for his hand. “Look at them. They’re perfect. Just like you and me.”
Darius stared down at the twins, their tiny hands curling around each other and little coos escaping their lips. His chest swelled, a warmth that had nothing to do with panic and everything to do with love.
He bent down, pressing a kiss to each tiny forehead, and then another to Amara’s. “I can’t believe this… I get to keep both of you safe forever. And I will. I promise.”
Amara laughed quietly, tears streaming down her cheeks. “You’re ridiculous,” she whispered, but her hand found his, squeezing it tight. “But I love it. I love you.”
Darius smiled, leaning back to look at the family he had fought so hard for. Chaos, fear, danger…it had all led to this moment. And for the first time in his life, he felt completely, undeniably at peace.
The twins yawned, snuggled close to their mother, and Darius rested his hand on her belly one last time, thinking about the journey they had survived. All the lies, all the threats, all the nights spent terrified and running… it had brought them here, to safety, to love, to family.
He leaned down and whispered against her hair, “We did it, sweetheart . All of it… we made it.”
Amara smiled, letting the exhaustion wash over her, listening to the soft breaths of their children and the steady rhythm of Darius’s heartbeat beside her.
the world felt calm. . Beautiful. Peaceful
And in that quiet, perfect moment, she realized… her dangerous desire had ended in a beautiful life… one full of love, laughter, and a family they would protect with everything they had.
