One Hundred & Forty
One Hundred & Forty
Three years later.
Three years had passed, but the memory of those dark days never fully faded for Amara. Still, today felt different… lighter, warmer, and full of hope. She stood in front of the mirror in the bridal suite, the soft morning light spilling through the tall windows, reflecting off the delicate lace of her wedding gown.
Her hands trembled slightly, though not from fear… this was excitement, anticipation, and a quiet disbelief that she had made it here. She adjusted the veil, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, and let out a slow breath. Three years ago, she would have never imagined a day like this could exist. A day free from fear, free from the shadows of her father, free from the terror of lies and secrets.
Valen had insisted she take the morning for herself, to breathe, to savor the day before he came to pick her up.
But Amara’s thoughts kept drifting to Darius… his steady presence, his protective hands, the way he had never let anyone hurt her again. Even now, the memory made her heart race.
Her maid-of-honor, her bestie for a lifetime Maya, walked in with a comforting smile. “You look… stunning, Girl,” she said softly, brushing a loose curl into place. “He’s going to lose his mind when he sees you.”
Amara gave a small laugh, though her throat felt tight. “I hope he remembers to breathe,” she whispered. “I think I’ll be the one fainting if I see him first.”
Maya shook her head, rolling her eyes affectionately. “Not a chance. Talking about your man his been pacing around all day. We don’t want to give him anymore anxiety we should start heading out.”
Amara smiled faintly, imagining Darius now…likely pacing, hands in his pockets, jaw tight, fighting the urge to run to her early. She remembered the time she had really trusted him, the nights spent hiding, the long drives to safety, the quiet mornings when it had just been the two of them and the sea. Everything had led to this… a promise of forever.
A gentle knock at the door made her turn. “Come in,” she called softly.
The door opened, and one of the wedding coordinators peeked in. “Everything is ready, Ms. Amara. The ceremony will start in an hour.”
She nodded, her fingers tightening on the lace of her dress. “Thank you.”
Alone again, she took a slow breath, letting the nerves settle into something sweeter… anticipation. Three years ago, she had been running, scared for her life, unsure of who to trust. And now? She had someone who would never leave her side, who had fought for her, loved her fiercely, and made her feel safe.
She glanced at the small locket around her neck… the one Darius had given her years ago, a symbol of protection, trust, and the promises they had made to each other. She pressed a finger to it, remembering the nights they had held each other, the quiet mornings by the sea, the chaos they had survived together.
Her heart ached in the best possible way. She had come so far, and today was proof that love… real, fierce, unyielding love…could survive even the darkest storms.
And then, a familiar deep voice broke the quiet.
“Ready, my baby sis ?”
Amara’s breath caught. She turned, and there he was. Valen…tall, impeccably dressed, eyes dark and full of emotion, and that slow, confident smile that always made her heart skip.
“Always,” she whispered, a soft laugh escaping her lips as tears pricked her eyes.
He stepped closer, lowering his forehead to hers. “You’re… breathtaking,” he murmured, his hands gently cupping her face. “Too beautiful to be give away.”
Amara’s hands found his chest, clutching him for a brief, grounding second before letting go to smile brightly. “We don’t want to give Darius an heart attack ” she said softly smiling .
The chime of the church bells echoed in the distance. The moment had arrived.
Hand in hand, she walked toward the doors together, hearts beating , ready to step into a future she had fought so hard to claim… a future built on love, trust, and the promise that she and Darius would have a life filled with happiness.
The doors opened, and a warm, golden light spilled into the aisle. Guests rose to their feet, murmuring softly, their faces a blur of smiles and admiration. Amara felt a flutter of nerves mixed with excitement, but she kept her gaze fixed on the man waiting at the end of the aisle.
Darius stood tall, perfectly composed, though she could see the subtle catch in his breath, the tightness in his jaw that betrayed how much he wanted to rush to her. The moment their eyes met, it was like everything else faded… the whispers, the light, the room itself. All that existed was him, and him alone, and the bond they had fought to preserve.
Her heart raced as she took the first step down the aisle, the soft lace of her gown brushing against the floor. Memories of the past… running from danger, hiding from threats, sleepless nights filled with fear… flickered in her mind. But each step forward was a reclaiming of her life, her freedom, and the love that had carried her through those years.
Darius’s hand twitched slightly at his side, but he didn’t move. He was giving her the space to walk to him, just as he had always respected her strength and choices. When she finally reached him, he reached out, and their hands met… fingers intertwining perfectly, as if made to fit together.
“You look… perfect,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion, his thumb brushing gently over the back of her hand. “I’ve never seen anyone more beautiful.”
Amara’s eyes stung with tears, and she smiled through them. “I could say the same for you. I’ve waited for this,” she said softly. “Every moment, every hard day, it led us here.”
The officiant began speaking, but their voices were distant to Amara. All she could focus on was Darius, the warmth of his hand in hers, the way he looked at her like she was the only person in the world that mattered.
“I promise,” he murmured, leaning closer so his lips brushed her temple, “I will spend my life making sure you’re never afraid again. That you’re never alone.”
Her chest tightened with a mixture of love and relief. “And I promise,” she whispered back, “to always trust you, to always fight for us, no matter what comes.”
As the vows began, Amara felt the weight of the past lift slightly. She remembered every danger they had survived, every secret, every lie that had once threatened to pull them apart. And yet here they were… standing together, unbroken, ready to face the world hand in hand.
When Darius placed the ring on her finger, she could feel the steady warmth of his hand, the strength behind it, and the love that had carried them both through so much darkness.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the officiant said.
A cheer rose from the guests, but all Amara heard was Darius’s deep laugh and the steady beat of his heart as he pulled her into his arms. She melted against him, feeling the safety and certainty that had been missing for so long.
Outside, the sunlight danced across the gardens, casting a golden glow on the couple as they stepped into their first moments as husband and wife. And for the first time in years, Amara felt completely free, completely loved, and completely home.
Darius whispered against her hair, his lips brushing her ear, “We did it, my love . We made it through everything… and now, this is ours.”
Amara smiled, resting her head against his chest. “Yes… ours.”
And in that moment, nothing from the past could touch them. Not fear, not lies, not even the shadows of their families. They had each other.. and that was enough.
