Chapter 129 ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINE
AIDEN
The waiters and workers in the restaurant were questioned, and the answers they gave were quite far from comforting.
Most of them didn’t see the person who delivered the package, even the person who received it from the man said he had a helmet on and she couldn’t see his face.
Everything was pointing at Lucien; he is the only one who can get me rattled this way.
This must be payback from him, but I would rather die than let him harm my unborn child and Chloe.
‘Drive,’ I told my driver once I stepped into the car.
He stepped on the accelerator and sped across the smooth, scanty roadway.
I held the box in my hand, examining the shoe closely.
My precious daughter’s property; she hasn’t even been born yet, and she has already become a target.
My house was the most secure place, or at least I thought so.
I must have a mole in my house, because only an insider can access the nursery.
‘Faster!!!’ I thundered.
The driver obeyed and stepped harder on the accelerator.
It was like we were having a road race. My driver swerved in and out of the little traffic that we met on the way, using any shortcut he saw and wedging the car into any little space he could find.
I tightened my grip on the box and murmured a prayer in my heart.
Lucien has crossed a line….
I destroyed his property; I’m not denying that, but that doesn’t give him the right to threaten my family.
Family is off limits.
But again, he has never been one who played by the rules.
The car pulled into my driveway, and I jumped out immediately, scanning the environment and asking.
‘Where is Chloe?’
My men glanced at each other and looked at me in confusion.
‘Answer me, you incompetent fools,’ I barked.
They swallowed.
‘She should be inside the house. We haven’t seen her, Boss, ’ one of them answered.
I cursed.
‘Is everything okay, Boss?’ another asked.
‘Don’t ask me that stupid question. You all should be buried deep inside a fucking disgusting gutter for this level of incompetence. I keep you around and pay you well, yet you can’t do your fucking job.’
I kicked the entrance door open and stormed inside the house.
‘Chloe!!!!’ I called as I went room by room, shouting her name, my heart pounding in my ears.
I was so scared that she might have been captured.
‘Chloe!!! Where are you?’ I asked.
The door leading to the backyard was pushed open; Chloe emerged holding a bowl of apples.
I sighed in relief. ‘Where the hell were you?’
‘I went outside to get some fruits’
I snapped, ‘I told you not to leave your room’
‘Why? Am I a prisoner now?’
I threw my hands in the air angrily. ‘Chloe, I’m being very serious. Why don’t you listen?’
‘And why don’t you communicate better? You just told me to stay inside without any reason why; does that make sense to you?’
‘Yes, it does. Listen and stop arguing with me. If I tell you to stay inside, then you should stay inside; it is for your own safety’
She chuckled. ‘There you go again. You keep saying that without telling me what you really mean by that. What is going on, Aiden? Am I in danger?’
I paused.
Telling her what really happened would just get her very unsettled, and I don’t want that.
‘Just be calm, Chloe. I will explain everything to you later’
She crossed her arms. ‘I have heard that before. You are not going to explain anything to me; you are just going to keep me in the dark like before’
‘I will see you later, Chloe. Just go to your room, please.’ I walked out quickly before she could retort.
‘I want to see the CCTV footage,’ I told my men.
Everything looked normal, as if nothing had happened at all.
The footage was pulled up, and I went back several hours before checking every section of the house.
Until…I discovered one of the cameras suddenly went dark about ten minutes before it came back again.
Ten minutes was enough time for someone to sneak into the nursery and take my baby’s shoe.
I turned to one of my men who was checking the footage with me. ‘Who entered the house in my absence?’
He looked at me like I was asking a stupid question. ‘All the maids on duty and every other person that needed to access the house’
‘I need a list. I need to find out who the mole is’
He stuttered, ‘You need a list of everybody that entered the house?’
I snapped, ‘Did I stutter? Just get me the damn names right now!!!’
He apologized, ran out quickly, came back a few minutes later with a list of names.
I interrogated everybody on the list secretly, and everybody had an alibi except one of my oldest workers.
Edward.
He was one of the workers that I really trust; he has been loyal from day one, and he has never given me any reason to doubt him until….today.
I sat him down and asked him what he was doing in the hallway, he explained and told me he was ordered to fix up a window which the maids were struggling to close.
I asked him if he saw anything suspicious; he said no, that everybody was going about their business.
I asked him if he saw anyone enter the nursery; he said no.
I studied him as he responded to my questions; he didn’t appear guilty or look like he was hiding something. He is too old to be a mole; he can hardly keep secrets because he talks too much, so he can’t be the mole.
I sent him away then, told one of my men to follow him home today and report anything that happens.
I still didn’t suspect Edward, but I had to be certain my mind wasn’t playing tricks on me.
It was 8 pm when the man I sent after Edward came back bearing terrible news; he followed Edward but lost him on the way.
I went hysterical.
I almost ripped his body into pieces.
I was fucking frustrated so much that I didn’t know what to think anymore.
It seems Lucien is several steps ahead of me.
The only thing I didn’t know was that I was fighting against the wrong person.
My enemy wasn’t Lucien; it was someone bigger.
