Chapter Twenty-Nine
As I reach the outside of the school, I’m hit by a fresh chill of air. I pull my hoodie up over my shoulders and walk further away from the door towards the main street, when I start to feel a presence behind me. I turn to see who is following me to see no one and shake the feeling off as I continue on my way.
“Hey Falencia!” I turn towards the voice that called me and notice Dafne running towards me.
“Hey, Dafne?” I reply questioningly.
“Yeah!” She replies enthusiastically “Why are you leaving, is everything ok?”
“Yeah, everything is fine, I’m just not having a great time.”
“I understand, I also want to make sure that you’re aware that I’m not trying to come between you and Addam, I know that you were really close and he mentioned that you were even possibly thinking about dating?”
I shake my head “Maybe he was, but to be completely honest with you, I don’t date, I don’t want someone to fall in love with me or vice versa.”
She cocks her head in confusion “Why wouldn’t you want to fall in love?”
“It’s hard to explain, but truthfully it’s not really something I want to get into right now.”
“I completely understand, but I hope that since you and Addam are so close that you and I can be just as close someday!” She replies.
I smile warmly at her “That would be nice. Maybe one day, we will be.”
She smiles back at me “Are you sure you have to go home? I honestly think you should stay here with us and try to have some fun.”
I smile at Dafne and really take in her appearance, she’s about my height maybe slightly taller, her auburn-brown hair is pulled into a beautiful braided messy bun, her sun-kissed skin is glowing under her one shoulder baby blue dress. “I appreciate that, but in all honesty, I feel like the third wheel in every situation I put myself in. I think going home would be the better option.” I tell her as I start to turn around to leave.
She grabs my wrist and pulls me in for a hug and whispers “Please!” she exclaims close to my ear “Don’t leave, it’s too dangerous.”
I pull away from her slightly and look at her with skepticism “What do you mean, it’s too dangerous?”
She looks around making sure that our surroundings are clear and that there isn’t anyone around that could overhear us. “I know who you are Falencia, I know what you are and what your destiny is supposed to be.” She whispers again.
I look at her trying to figure out if she’s serious or not. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Look, I know that you don’t know me, and you honestly don’t have any reason to believe me, but I am telling you the truth, I know who you are and the only thing I want is to help you keep your secret and stay hidden from the Underworld Society. I wasn’t raised in the Underworld Society, but I know of them and I know how they raise their young, it needs to change and you’re the person to get that change in motion!”
I look at her in confusion “What in the hell are you talking about?”
“I will explain more about it later, but for right now please come rejoin us in the dance and try to have a good time.”
I bite my bottom lip debating with myself on whether or not I want to trust her, my gut is screaming at me to stay with her and listen to what she has to say, but my head is telling me that I can take care of anything that comes my way. I decide to go with my gut and listen to her “Alright, I’ll come back in and hang with the group until we leave.”
She smiles at me and hugs me again “Good! I know that Addam wouldn’t ever be able to forgive himself if something were to happen to you.”
“He has nothing to worry about, and you’re awfully chipper about this whole thing, especially considering that you’re his girlfriend?” I say not really understanding the actual bond that they have.
“It’s so much more than just a girlfriend/boyfriend kind of relationship, it’s really hard to explain, but the moon goddess pairs two people she deems worthy of each other and they’re meant to compliment each other in ways that others can’t.” She explains.
I raise my left eyebrow at her in inquiry. “I still have so many questions, but I’ll leave them on the back burner for now. I’ll come back in with y’all and try to enjoy myself, but I make no promises.”
She smiles at me “I completely understand, and we don’t expect any promises, we just hope that you will try to have a good time with us, and who knows, maybe you’ll find your soulmate!”
I chuckle nervously “I don’t believe in ‘soul mates’ or any of the like, but I don’t bash other people’s beliefs, I’m glad that you and Addam found each other, but if there is such a thing as ‘soul mates’ I honestly don’t think I have one.” I reply as we walk back into the gym.
The music had changed from the slow song that was playing when I first left the gym to a fast paced song that had people jumping around the dance floor. I sigh and follow Dafne back to our group of friends. “Look who I found!” She exclaims as she hugs Addam around the waist.
I roll my eyes slightly “Yeah, she convinced me to stay with y’all, said that none of you would have much fun if I wasn’t here.”
“Well, she has that right!” Nik says as he gives me a side hug.
“I already know you can’t function without me!” I tease him.
“You wound me, I am capable of functioning on my own!” Nik replies feigning hurt.
I laugh as Cherie rubs his chest and coos “I’ll make her scathing remark feel better baby.”
“I swear, all you girls do is make fun of me!” Nik exclaims, putting out his lip and pouting.
“Dude, you’ll survive!” I retort. “Plus, pouting doesn’t look very good on you!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about! I look good any which way.” He retorts.
Our whole group bursts out laughing “Whatever helps you sleep at night.” I tell him.
Cherie looks up at him and smiles “You do look good any which way!”
Another slow song comes on and all of the couples head towards the dance floor, I decide to sit at the table nearest me in an empty chair. I am scrolling through my phone when I hear someone ask if I would like to dance, looking up I notice Sean Monroe, a cute guy from my social studies class is looking at me with his hand held out towards me with a smile on his handsome face. He stands at about five foot eleven inches, his dark brown hair is shaved on the sides, with his long hair put into a Viking braid.
I smile at him and nod “Sure, I’d love to dance with you.”
His smile widens as I take his hand and he leads me out onto the dance floor “I didn’t think I’d see you here tonight, you’re always so against school sanctioned events.”
“Yeah, I’m not usually one for things like this in all honesty.” I reply.
“I can understand that what are your plans for after school?” He asks.
I shrug “Honestly, the only thing I have planned for right now is a road trip.”
“That sounds like fun, so you’re taking a year off before college?” He asks.
I shake my head “I don’t know if I’m going to go to college.”
“I always just assumed that your next plan was college.” He replies as he slides his hand a little further around my waist.
“I don’t know if I want to go to college, I mean the only thing that college gives you is the studious knowledge of what you’ll need to know for a job, I’d rather learn on the job and get a real-world experience.” I reply.
The song ends and we step apart from each other “Thank you for the dance, I probably should get back to my group.”
“I’d love to chat with you more if you wouldn’t be opposed.” He says following me towards my friends.
I smile at him “I don’t mind, we can chat on discord or even snapchat.”
“Sure, I’d love that. Do you have your phone with you?”
I nod as I grab my phone from my clutch that is in the pocket of my hoodie “I do.” I reply handing it to him. “Go ahead and put in your credentials.”
He smiles and puts his information into my phone “The ball is in your court.”
I give him a genuine smile as I send him a message in discord. ‘Thanks for the dance’
He smiles as his phone pings, he walks off into the crowd, I take a deep breath and join my friends “That was weird.”
Freyja looks at me “What was weird?”
“Sean Monroe and I just shared a dance.”
“Sean Monroe?” Freyja asks.
“He’s a classmate of ours.”
“I know who he is, he’s a handsome guy, what was weird about it?”
“He said that he wants to get to know me more. Dude and I haven’t spoken in any capacity in all of the years we’ve gone to school together and now all of a sudden, this close to graduation and he’s wanting to ‘get to know’ me?”
“I will admit that the time is very fishy, but maybe he realizes that this is the last time he’s going to ever see you and he knows that he’ll never get this opportunity again.” Freyja says hopefully.
“That’s what Facebook is for.” I reply laughing, but quickly sober up as a thought comes to mind. “Hey Ryker?”
Ryker looks at me “yeah?”
“Do you know everyone who is against me or rather who is apart of the society that is looking for me?” I ask.
“Unfortunately, the Society is much like that of the world, it’s vast and there are many members.” He replies.
I sigh “Damn it!”
“What’s wrong?” Ryker asks.
“Nothing.” I reply not knowing whether I should trust him with my thoughts and suspicions or not.
“Are you sure? It seems like there may be something wrong.” He says.
I bite the inside of my bottom lip thinking it over. “I think Sean may be apart of the group that’s looking for me and he’s looking to getting close to me. There was a letter slid under my door at Addam’s house tonight stating that there are traitors in the pack, people who know who I am and I’m wondering if maybe there’s more who know who I am other than just the pack.”
