The Claiming Ritual
The Claiming Ritual
Aria's POV
The knife sliced across my palm before I could change my mind.
Blood welled up instantly, bright red against my pale skin. Elena held the traditional bowl underneath my hand, catching each drop.
"Are you sure about this?" Marco asked one last time. "Once we do this ceremony, there's no going back."
I looked around the basement of the Romano property. Candles flickered on old stone walls covered with family crests. This room had seen hundreds of blood oaths over the years.
"I'm sure," I said, though my heart was racing. "After everything that's happened, I want to belong somewhere. Really belong."
"Even knowing what it means?" Luca asked quietly. "You'll be bound to all of us. Forever."
"That's what I want."
The truth was, after killing Roberto and learning about my great-grandfather's betrayal, I felt lost. Everything I thought I knew about my family had been lies. But these four men - they'd never lied to me. They'd protected me, loved me, stayed faithful even when it cost them everything.
"Then we begin," Elena said officially. She looked older in the lighting, more like the mafia queen she really was. "Aria Maria Castellano, do you come here freely?"
"I do."
"Do you understand that this bond cannot be broken by death, distance, or time?"
"I do."
"Do you swear to honor the families you join today?"
"I swear it."
Elena nodded to Marco, who stepped forward with his own knife. Without hesitation, he cut his hand and let his blood drip into the bowl with mine.
"I, Marco Romano, claim you as mine to protect," he said, his gray eyes fierce in the flickering light. "Your enemies are my enemies. Your blood is my blood. Your life is worth more than my own."
The words sent shivers down my spine. This wasn't just a romantic promise - it was a holy vow that bound him to die for me if necessary.
Luca was next. His cut was deeper than Marco's, and he didn't even flinch as blood flowed into the bowl.
"I, Luca Romano, claim you as mine to cherish," he said, his brown eyes warm despite the serious moment. "Your secrets are safe with me. Your happiness is my goal. Your heart is my treasure."
Dmitri stepped forward, his golden hair almost white in the candlelight. He sliced his hand with brutal efficiency.
"I, Dmitri Petrov, claim you as mine to fight for," he declared, his Russian accent thicker than normal. "Your battles are my fights. Your strength is my strength. Your freedom is worth any price."
Finally, Kai approached with calm confidence. His cut was exact, controlled, like everything else about him.
"I, Kai Nakamura, claim you as mine to honor," he said quietly. "Your wisdom guides me. Your spirit moves me. Your trust is my most sacred job."
The bowl was full now, our blood mixing together until it was impossible to tell where one person stopped and another began.
"Now you must claim them in return," Elena ordered, offering me a clean knife.
I didn't pause. One by one, I cut each of their hands again, deeper this time, watching them bleed into a second bowl.
"I, Aria Castellano, claim you all as mine," I said, my voice stronger than I felt. "Marco, my guardian. Luca, my heart. Dmitri, my hero. Kai, my rock. I bind myself to you in blood and devotion, in love and war, until death takes us all."
Elena mixed the bowls together, then dipped her finger in the combined blood. She drew symbols on my face - ancient marks that meant belonging, protection, family.
"By blood and choice, you are now one family," she stated. "What threatens one, threatens all. What honors one, honors all."
I felt different instantly. Not physically, but mentally. Like invisible chains linked me to each of them, strong as steel but warm as sunlight.
Marco stepped forward and kissed me gently, tasting like promise and forever. Then Luca, his kiss deeper and more intense. Dmitri's kiss was fierce and claiming, while Kai's was soft and respectful.
"How do you feel?" Dmitri asked, grinning at my dazed look.
"Like I'm finally home," I said honestly.
That's when the blasts started.
The first blast shook the whole building, raining dust and debris from the roof. Emergency lights flickered on as the normal power died.
"Vincent," Marco said grimly, grabbing weapons from a secret cabinet.
"How did he find us?" Luca commanded, checking his gun.
"Doesn't matter now," Kai replied, moving toward the steps. "We need to get Aria out of here."
"No," I said strongly. "I'm tired of running. We end this tonight."
"Aria, you just completed a blood ritual," Elena warned. "You're weak from blood loss."
"I'm fine." I picked up one of Kai's extra knives, testing its weight. "Besides, Vincent's not just coming for me anymore. He's coming for all of us."
Another blast, closer this time. Through the stone walls, we could hear gunshots and shouting.
"How many men does he have?" I asked.
"Too many," Marco said, listening to news from his security team through his earpiece. "At least fifty, maybe more."
"We're outnumbered," Dmitri noted, but he didn't sound worried. If anything, he looked excited.
"Good," I said, shocking everyone including myself. "I want him to bring everything he has. When we beat him tonight, I want there to be no question who won."
The basement door burst inward, and armed men in black tactical gear poured down the stairs. Vincent appeared behind them, flanked by my apparently dead great-grandfather Antonio and my evil aunt Sophia.
But what made my blood freeze wasn't the guns pointing at us.
It was the man standing next to Vincent, very much alive and smiling coldly.
Chen Wei, the crime boss we thought was our friend, raised his weapon toward Marco.
"Hello, Commission Chairman," he said to me with a fake bow. "Ready to claim your birthright?"
Before I could ask what he meant, Chen Wei pulled the trigger.
Marco dove to protect me, and I watched in fear as the bullet meant for him hit Elena instead.
She fell, blood spreading across her chest, her eyes finding mine one last time.
"Remember," she whispered. "Family... protects... family."
Then her eyes closed, and the woman who'd become like a mother to me went still.
