Chapter 180 – Family Reclaimed

Chapter 180 – Family Reclaimed

The steel door opened.

For one impossible second, Damian couldn’t move.

Lucian stood on the other side.

His clothes were rumpled. His hair was messy. His face was pale from exhaustion, but his eyes were unmistakably his.

Alive.

Waiting.

“Daddy?”

Damian crossed the room in three strides.

He dropped to his knees and pulled his son into his arms.

Lucian clung to him immediately.

“I knew you’d come.”

Damian closed his eyes.

He had imagined this moment a thousand times since Lucian disappeared.

None of those dreams had prepared him for the weight of his son in his arms.

“I told you I would.”

His voice broke.

“I always will.”

Elena reached them seconds later.

She dropped beside them, wrapping her arms around both father and son.

For several moments, the three of them simply held each other.

No strategy.

No war.

No empire.

Just family.

Lucian buried his face against Elena.

“I was scared.”

“I know, baby.”

She kissed his hair.

“But you’re safe now.”

Lucian looked toward Damian.

“Are we going home?”

Damian hesitated.

“Yes.”

Then he looked around the room.

“Everyone goes home.”

A violent tremor shook the monastery.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Marco’s voice crackled through the communications device.

“Damian! We have a problem.”

Another explosion thundered overhead.

“The eastern wing is collapsing.”

“How long?”

“Minutes.”

Damian looked at Elena.

She understood immediately.

They couldn’t stay.

Luca rushed toward the doorway.

“This way!”

They followed him into the corridor.

The monastery had become a maze of smoke, fire, and collapsing stone.

Rossi and Moretti soldiers were evacuating civilians through the tunnels.

Some carried wounded allies.

Others searched rooms for anyone still trapped inside.

The battle had become a rescue operation.

“Marco!”

Damian shouted into his communicator.

“Get everyone out!”

“We’re trying!”

A deafening crash interrupted him.

The ceiling above one corridor collapsed.

Several soldiers disappeared beneath the debris.

Damian instinctively moved toward them.

Elena grabbed his arm.

“Damian!”

He stopped.

Lucian was beside her.

For one terrible second, Damian was caught between two responsibilities.

His family.

And the people who had followed him into the war.

Then he turned to Marco.

“Get them out.”

“We’re not leaving anyone behind.”

Damian handed Lucian to Elena.

“Stay with him.”

She nodded.

“Come back.”

“I will.”

He ran toward the collapsed corridor with Nikolai and Malik.

Together, they cleared stones and pulled injured soldiers from beneath the rubble.

One of them was Marco.

His face was covered in dust, one arm pinned beneath a broken beam.

Damian froze.

“Marco.”

His oldest friend looked up.

“You always did know how to make an entrance.”

Damian almost laughed.

Almost.

“Get him out!”

They freed Marco.

But the monastery continued collapsing.

Luca suddenly shouted.

“The western tunnel!”

Everyone turned.

“It’s blocked!”

Salvatore approached the map.

“There is another route.”

“Where?”

“The old chapel.”

Damian looked toward the distant passage.

“Move!”

The evacuation began.

Elena carried Lucian through the smoke while Malik and two guards protected them.

Lucian looked back repeatedly.

“Where’s Dad?”

“He’s coming.”

Elena kept repeating it.

But fear tightened around her heart.

She had trusted those words before.

She needed them to be true again.

Then another explosion struck.

Elena stumbled.

A massive stone column crashed between her and the others.

She and Lucian were trapped on one side.

Damian was on the other.

“ELENA!”

“Damian!”

They could see each other through the smoke.

Lucian began crying.

“Daddy!”

Damian rushed toward them.

The floor suddenly cracked.

A section of the passage began collapsing.

“Don’t move!”

Damian shouted.

Elena froze.

Lucian clung to her.

Damian searched desperately for another route.

Then he noticed an old maintenance hatch beneath the rubble.

He pulled it open.

“Get down!”

Elena lowered Lucian through the opening.

Damian followed.

They crawled through a narrow service tunnel while the monastery collapsed above them.

When they finally emerged…

They were outside.

Rain poured over the ruined monastery.

The surviving members of both families gathered in the courtyard.

Some were wounded.

Some were carrying the injured.

Others simply stood in stunned silence.

The monastery was burning behind them.

Years of secrets were disappearing beneath the flames.

Damian looked around.

“Count everyone.”

Marco began calling names.

One by one, survivors answered.

Rossi.

Moretti.

Allies.

Doctors.

Civilians.

Then silence.

Marco’s expression changed.

“Salvatore?”

Damian’s heart sank.

They searched the courtyard.

Nothing.

Nikolai suddenly pointed toward the ruins.

“There!”

A figure stood near the collapsed chapel.

Salvatore.

He was helping two injured soldiers out of the rubble.

Damian started toward him.

“Salvatore!”

The old commander turned.

He smiled.

Then the chapel wall collapsed.

Damian stopped.

“NO!”

A cloud of dust swallowed the area.

When it cleared…

Salvatore was gone.

Silence.

No one moved.

Then Marco dropped to his knees.

He stared at the ruins.

“No.”

Damian approached him.

Marco shook his head.

“He was right there.”

Damian placed a hand on his shoulder.

Marco looked up.

“We all came for Lucian.”

His voice cracked.

“And we lost him.”

Damian couldn’t answer.

Because it was true.

They had won.

But victory had taken another piece of them.

Elena stood several meters away with Lucian in her arms.

She looked at the burning monastery.

Then at Damian.

She understood the cost.

The war had taken friends.

Family.

Homes.

Years of their lives.

But tonight…

It had also given something back.

Her son.

Lucian reached toward Damian.

“Daddy.”

Damian walked over.

He took his son into his arms.

Lucian rested his head against his father’s shoulder.

“Are we really going home?”

Damian kissed his forehead.

“Yes.”

He looked at Elena.

“All of us.”

Behind them, Matteo was brought forward in a wheelchair.

Despite his injuries, he had insisted on coming.

When he saw Lucian, tears filled his eyes.

“My grandson.”

Lucian smiled.

“Grandpa!”

Matteo reached for him.

Lucian ran into his arms.

For the first time since his shooting, Matteo laughed without pain.

He held Lucian tightly.

“Welcome home.”

Elena watched them.

Her father.

Her son.

Damian beside her.

Three generations standing together.

She finally understood what the war had been trying to destroy.

Not territory.

Not money.

Not power.

Family.

And somehow…

Despite everything…

Their family remained.

Hours later, the survivors gathered beneath the battered olive tree at the estate.

The same tree planted as a symbol of peace.

Its branches were damaged.

Its trunk was scorched.

But new leaves had begun to grow.

Damian stood beneath it with Elena and Lucian.

He looked toward the empty place where Salvatore should have been.

“We’ll remember them.”

Elena nodded.

“Every one of them.”

Marco stood nearby, silent.

Matteo raised his head.

“The dead must never become numbers.”

Damian looked at his family.

“They’ll become part of our history.”

Lucian reached for Damian’s hand.

Then Elena’s.

He joined their hands together.

“Now we’re together.”

he whispered.

Elena smiled through her tears.

“Yes.”

Damian looked down at his son.

“Family reclaimed.”

But across the city, far from the Rossi estate, a black car moved silently through the rain.

Inside sat Alessandro Vieri.

His clothes were stained with dust.

His face was bruised.

But he was alive.

He looked through the window at the distant glow of the burning monastery.

His phone rang.

He answered.

“Did they rescue the boy?”

“Yes.”

A long silence followed.

Alessandro closed his eyes.

“Then the first game is over.”

He opened them again.

“And now…”

His expression hardened.

“…we begin the final one.”

Back at the estate, Damian held Elena’s hand while Lucian slept safely between them.

They had won their son back.

But they had paid for him with blood, loyalty, and lives.

The war had not ended.

Yet something had changed.

Damian no longer fought merely to protect an empire.

Elena no longer stood behind him.

She stood beside him.

And Lucian was no longer the hidden heir caught between two families.

He was the child who had brought them together.

Their family had been broken.

Scattered.

Tested.

But not destroyed.

For the first time, Damian understood that a crown was not measured by how many enemies knelt before it.

It was measured by who remained standing beside you when everything else had burned.

He looked at Elena.

Then at Lucian.

And silently made a promise.

Whatever came next…

He would not lose them again.
