Chapter 179 – Fire and Steel
Chapter 179 – Fire and Steel
The monastery became a prison the moment the iron gates slammed shut.
Their echoes rolled through the underground passages like the tolling of a funeral bell.
Damian tightened his grip on his flashlight, sweeping its beam across the maze of ancient stone corridors.
To his left, Elena studied the faded markings carved into the walls.
“This wasn’t just a monastery,” she whispered.
“It was built like a fortress.”
Damian nodded.
“And Alessandro has spent years turning it into one again.”
Somewhere in the darkness, a child laughed.
The sound was faint.
Almost impossible to place.
Elena’s heart skipped.
“Lucian?”
Silence answered.
Then another laugh.
This time from a different direction.
Recorded.
A trap.
Above ground, Marco watched thick steel barricades seal every entrance.
“Explosives won’t work,” Amara reported after scanning the reinforced doors. “The entire structure is interconnected. If we bring down the wrong wall…”
She didn’t finish.
No one needed her to.
The tunnels below could collapse.
Damian and Elena would be buried.
So would Lucian.
Marco clenched his jaw.
“There has to be another way.”
Inside the monastery, emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the corridors in a deep crimson glow.
A voice echoed through hidden speakers.
“Welcome to the final lesson.”
Alessandro’s calm voice drifted through the labyrinth.
“Your strength has always been impressive.”
A pause.
“But strength alone never wins wars.”
The lights went out.
Then returned.
Figures emerged from the shadows.
Not reckless attackers.
Disciplined soldiers wearing black tactical uniforms with no insignias.
They advanced in silence.
Damian stepped slightly in front of Elena.
“Stay close.”
The first wave rushed forward.
The narrow passage became a blur of movement.
Stone walls amplified every footstep.
Every command.
Every impact.
There was no room for grand tactics.
Only discipline.
Only survival.
Damian and Elena fought side by side, protecting each other’s blind spots while moving steadily through the corridor.
Their goal was never to conquer the maze.
It was to keep moving.
To keep searching.
Elsewhere beneath the monastery, Nikolai’s team found another hidden entrance.
“The ventilation shafts.”
Amara said.
“They’re too small for equipment.”
Nikolai smiled.
“But not for us.”
Within minutes, volunteers squeezed through the narrow passages, navigating decades of dust and rusted metal to reach the lower levels.
Back in the labyrinth, Elena noticed something strange.
The attackers weren’t trying to overwhelm them.
They were delaying them.
She grabbed Damian’s arm.
“They’re buying time.”
“For what?”
Before he could answer, the entire monastery trembled.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
A deep mechanical rumble echoed through the stone.
Amara’s voice finally broke through the damaged communications.
“Damian!”
“The lower levels are moving!”
“What?”
“The walls!”
“They’re changing!”
Ancient passageways were being sealed while new ones opened.
The monastery itself had become a shifting maze.
Marco finally breached the main gate above.
His team flooded into the monastery courtyard.
Instead of resistance, they found it deserted.
Empty weapons racks.
Cold coffee.
Abandoned command posts.
“They’ve withdrawn underground.”
Marco realized.
“Everyone split into search teams.”
“No unnecessary risks.”
“This building is the enemy as much as the people inside it.”
Deep below, Elena spotted a small blue crayon lying on the floor.
She froze.
She picked it up.
Lucian always carried blue crayons.
She looked ahead.
Another one.
Then another.
A trail.
Damian smiled for the first time in days.
“He’s helping us.”
Their son had left clues.
He believed they would come.
And he had been right.
The trail led them into an enormous underground sanctuary.
Centuries-old stone columns stretched toward a vaulted ceiling.
At the center stood an iron bridge crossing a deep chamber.
As Damian and Elena stepped onto it, alarms blared.
Heavy doors burst open on both ends.
Black-clad guards poured into the chamber.
At the same moment, Marco’s team emerged from a side passage.
Nikolai and Malik arrived from another.
Separated for hours…
The rescue teams were finally together.
The underground sanctuary erupted into chaos.
Orders echoed through the cavern.
Teams moved to shield civilians they discovered hiding in adjoining rooms.
Smoke filled the air as emergency systems activated.
The bridge became the critical point.
If it fell, everyone behind it would be trapped.
Damian planted himself at its center.
“No one crosses.”
he ordered.
His allies formed a defensive line beside him.
Rossi.
Moretti.
Former rivals.
Standing shoulder to shoulder.
Not for territory.
Not for revenge.
For one child.
And for every innocent life caught in the war.
Elena hurried through a side corridor opened by Malik’s team.
Behind a locked security door, they found frightened civilians who had been forced to remain in the monastery as leverage.
Doctors.
Maintenance workers.
Families.
She immediately organized their evacuation.
“Take them through the western tunnel!”
“No one gets left behind!”
The civilians moved quickly under the protection of Rossi and Moretti guards.
The rescue had become larger than Lucian alone.
The fighting gradually shifted.
Alessandro’s forces began retreating deeper into the complex.
Not defeated.
Planned.
Disciplined.
“They’re leading us somewhere.”
Nikolai warned.
Damian looked at the remaining blue crayon lying near another doorway.
“No.”
he said quietly.
“They’re trying to stop us from reaching someone.”
He picked up the crayon and slipped it into his pocket.
“We keep going.”
High above the battlefield, hidden behind reinforced glass, Alessandro Vieri watched everything unfold from an observation room.
An adviser stood beside him.
“They’re pushing farther than expected.”
Alessandro remained calm.
“They’re becoming exactly what I wanted.”
The adviser looked confused.
“They’re united.”
Alessandro smiled faintly.
“Yes.”
“And united people make the most predictable sacrifices.”
He pressed a button.
Somewhere below, another massive steel door slowly unlocked.
“The next move…”
he murmured,
“…belongs to them.”
Below, Damian, Elena, and their allies reached the newly opened passage.
A warm breeze drifted from within.
Then…
A familiar voice echoed faintly through the corridor.
“Daddy?”
Damian stopped breathing.
It was Lucian.
Alive.
Very close.
He looked at Elena.
Neither of them spoke.
With renewed determination, they crossed the threshold together, unaware that Alessandro’s final gambit was waiting just beyond the next door.
