First Taste of Freedom
First Taste of Freedom
Lyra's POV
The breakfast tray crashed to the floor as I jumped back, my heart hammering against my chest.
"I'm sorry!" I gasped, dropping to my knees to clean up the mess. "Please don't punish me! I'll clean it up right away!"
The woman who had brought me food just stared at me with wide eyes. "Lyra, it's okay. You don't have to—"
"I'm so sorry," I kept saying, hurriedly picking up pieces of broken plate. A sharp edge cut my finger, and blood dripped onto the floor. "I'll work extra hours to pay for the plate. I'll—"
"Stop." The woman's speech was gentle but firm. She knelt down next to me and carefully took the broken pieces from my hands. "You're not in trouble. It was just an accident."
I looked up at her, confused. At the Ironclad Pack, mistakes always meant punishment. Always meant pain.
"But I broke your plate," I whispered.
"So what?" The woman smiled. "I'm Sarah, by the way. And plates can be changed. You can't."
Sarah helped me stand up and guided me to sit on the bed. She looked at my bleeding finger and frowned.
"Let me get Elena to look at that cut," she said.
"No, please," I said quickly. "I don't want to bother anyone. It's just a small cut."
"Lyra," Sarah said softly, "you're not hurting anyone. We want to help you."
Before I could argue, she was gone. I sat on the bed, looking at my bleeding finger, trying to understand what was happening. These people were being so kind to me, and I didn't know why. In my world, kindness always came with a price.
When Sarah came back with Elena, I tried to hide my hand.
"Let me see that cut," Elena said, sitting next to me on the bed.
"It's fine," I lied. "I don't need help."
"Lyra." Elena's voice was gentle. "I'm a healer. It's what I do. Will you please let me help you?"
Slowly, I held out my hand. Elena examined the cut, then did something that made me gasp. She placed her palm over my finger, and I felt a warm, tingling feeling. When she pulled her hand away, the cut was totally gone.
"How did you do that?" I asked.
"Healing magic," Elena explained. "It's my gift. Every wolf has something special about them."
"Not me," I said immediately. "I'm just a slave. I don't have any gifts."
Elena and Sarah shared a look that I didn't understand.
"Would you like to help me in the healing center today?" Elena asked. "I could use an assistant."
I looked at her. "You want my help?"
"Yes. If you'd like to."
No one had ever asked me what I'd like to do. At the pack, I was just told what to do, and I did it. The idea of picking felt scary and exciting at the same time.
"Okay," I said quietly.
An hour later, I was following Elena to a building filled with hurt wolves. My stomach twisted with nerves. What if I messed up? What if I hurt someone?
"Don't worry," Elena said, like she could read my mind. "Just watch and learn."
The first case was a young boy who had fallen and scraped his knee badly. He was crying, and his mother looked worried.
"Can you hold his hand while I clean the wound?" Elena asked me.
I paused, then reached out and took the little boy's hand. The moment our skin touched, something incredible happened. The boy stopped crying, and his scrape started to heal right before our eyes.
Elena gasped. The boy's mother stepped back in shock. And I yanked my hand away like I'd been burned.
"I'm sorry!" I said, fear rising in my chest. "I don't know what I did! I didn't mean to—"
"Lyra," Elena interrupted, her voice full of wonder. "Do you know what just happened?"
I shook my head, tears starting to fall.
"You healed him," Elena said softly. "With just your touch."
"That's impossible," I whispered. "I can't do magic. I'm nobody."
"You're not nobody," the boy's mother said, kneeling in front of me. "You're great. Thank you for helping my son."
She hugged me, and I stood there frozen. When was the last time someone had touched me? I couldn't even remember.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Elena had me help with more cases, and every time I touched someone who was hurt, they got better. Not just a little better—completely healed.
By evening, word had spread throughout Haven's Rest. Wolves kept coming up to me, thanking me, treating me like I was special. Like I counted.
"I don't understand," I told Darius when he found me sitting by the pond. "Why can I do this? What's happening to me?"
Darius sat down next to me, and I felt that same safe feeling I got whenever he was near.
"Your power is awakening," he said. "You're not just any wolf, Lyra. You're StarBlood. Your bloodline is old and powerful."
"But I've never been able to do anything like this before."
"Because you've been suppressed," Darius explained. "The trauma, the abuse, the fake mate bond—it all worked to keep your real nature hidden. But now that you're free, now that you're safe, your real self is appearing."
I thought about that. For twenty years, I'd believed I was useless. Powerless. But today, I'd helped people. I'd made them better just by touching them.
"What else can I do?" I asked.
Darius smiled. "I don't know. But I'd like to help you find out."
We sat in comfortable silence for a while, watching the other wolves go about their evening routines. Children played nearby, their laughter filling the air. For the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged somewhere.
That's when I noticed the stranger.
A woman I'd never seen before was walking through the center of Haven's Rest, looking around like she was searching for something. She had long black hair and wore a dark robe that seemed to absorb the light around it.
"Darius," I said, pointing toward the woman. "Who is that?"
Darius looked where I was pointing, and his whole body went stiff. I heard him curse under his breath.
"Get inside," he said, his voice sharp with order. "Now."
"What's wrong?" I asked, but I was already standing up.
"That's Seraphina," Darius said grimly. "My mother's spy."
The woman's head turned toward us, and even from a distance, I could see her eyes sparkling with an unnatural light. When she smiled, her teeth looked too sharp.
"She's found us," Darius whispered. "And that means my mother knows exactly where you are."
Before I could answer, Seraphina raised her hand, and every light in Haven's Rest went out at once, plunging us into complete darkness.
In the dark, I heard her voice, cold and mocking: "Hello, little StarBlood. Your new family is about to learn what happens to those who disobey the High Priestess."
