Haven's Rest
Haven's Rest
Lyra's POV
Someone was screaming.
I sat up fast, my heart beating. For a second, I thought Marcus had found me again. But then I realized the screaming was coming from me.
"Hey, it's okay," a gentle voice said. "You're safe. It was just a nightmare."
I looked around, confused. I was lying on the softest bed I'd ever felt, covered by warm blankets that smelled like flowers. Sunlight was streaming through a real glass window - not the tiny barred holes I was used to in the slave cells.
A woman with kind eyes was sitting next to me, holding a cup of something that smelled amazing.
"Where am I?" I asked, my voice scratchy.
"Haven's Rest," the woman said with a smile. "I'm Elena, the healer here. Darius brought you in last night. You've been sleeping for almost twelve hours."
Darius. The memories came rushing back. The Shadowlands. The fight. His eyes like burning stars.
"Is he real?" I whispered. "Or did I dream him too?"
Elena laughed. "Oh, he's very real. And very worried about you. He's been checking on you every hour."
I tried to get out of bed, but Elena gently pushed me back down.
"Not so fast," she said. "You lost a lot of blood. You need to rest and eat something first."
She gave me the cup, and I took a sip. It was some kind of soup, but it tasted better than anything I'd ever had. Warmth spread through my whole body.
"I've never had food like this," I said, taking another gulp.
Elena's face grew sad. "Darius told me about your... problem. I'm sorry you went through that."
"It's okay," I said immediately. That's what I always said when people noted how the pack treated me.
"No, it's not okay," Elena said strongly. "And it's never going to happen again. Not here."
Before I could ask what she meant, the door burst open.
A boy who looked about my age stumbled in, his face covered in dirt and his clothes torn.
"Elena!" he gasped. "You have to come quick! There's been an accident in the training yard!"
Elena jumped up immediately. "What happened, Tommy?"
"Jake fell from the rock wall. His leg looks really bad. There's bone sticking out and everything!"
"Get my medical bag," Elena ordered, already moving toward the door. She looked back at me. "I'm sorry, Lyra. I have to go help someone. Will you be okay alone for a few minutes?"
I nodded, even though the thought of being alone scared me.
After Elena left, I got out of bed slowly. My legs were shaky, but I felt stronger than I had in days. Whatever Elena had given me to drink was helping.
I walked to the window and looked outside, and my mouth fell open.
This place was nothing like the pack area I'd grown up in. There were dogs everywhere - but they weren't fighting or bullying each other. They were laughing. Playing. Working together.
A group of children were chasing each other around a pond. An older man was showing a young woman how to carve wood. Two teens were practicing sword fighting, but when one fell down, the other helped him up instead of mocking him.
And the weirdest part? I could see wolves of different ranks talking to each other like friends. Alphas sitting next to Omegas. Betas sharing food with wolves who had clearly been slaves like me.
This had to be a dream. Places like this didn't exist in the real world.
"Beautiful, isn't it?"
I spun around to find Darius standing in the doorway. He was even more handsome in the daytime, but he looked tired. Like he hadn't slept at all.
"Is this really happening?" I asked. "Are those people really..."
"Happy?" Darius finished. "Yes. That's what happens when wolves are allowed to be themselves instead of being pushed into boxes based on their birth."
He walked over to stand next to me at the window. "Every wolf you see out there was thrown away by their pack for one reason or another. Too weak. Too different. Too ready to ask questions."
"Like me," I said quietly.
"Like us," Darius amended. "I was exiled from my pack too."
I looked at him in surprise. "But you're so strong. You're an Alpha. Why would anyone remove you?"
Darius's jaw tightened. "Because I refused to marry someone I didn't love. Because I wouldn't bow down to crooked leaders. Because I thought that a wolf's worth shouldn't be decided by who their parents were."
"What pack were you from?" "The Celestial Court."
I nearly choked. "The Celestial Court? But that's... that's the most powerful pack in the world. They rule over all the other packs."
"They do," Darius said sadly. "And they're the most crooked pack in the world too. My own mother tried to force me to marry the daughter of her biggest friend. When I refused, she had me declared a traitor and expelled forever."
"Your mother banished you?"
"High Priestess Morgana Nightfall," Darius said, and his voice was full of pain. "She cares more about power than she does about her own son."
Wait. Morgana. Where had I heard that name before?
Then it hit me. The hooded people in the forest. One of them had mentioned someone named Morgana.
"Darius," I said slowly. "I think your mother is trying to kill me."
He went very still. "What do you mean?"
I told him about the meeting I'd watched between Marcus and the hooded figures. About how they'd mentioned someone called Morgana who was planning a ritual.
With every word I spoke, Darius's face got darker and darker.
"She's behind this," he said when I finished. "My mother is the one who's been hunting StarBlood wolves."
"But why?"
"Because she wants to rule over more than just the werewolf packs," Darius said. "She wants to control people too. And the only way to do that is to finish the Ancient Binding ritual."
"What's the Ancient Binding ritual?"
Darius turned to face me, and his eyes were filled with fear. "It's a spell that would make her the supreme ruler of all supernatural beings. But it needs the blood of the last StarBlood heir."
My blood went cold. "Me."
"You." Darius took my hands in his. "Lyra, my mother killed your parents. She's been hunting you your entire life. And now she knows exactly where you are."
"How could she know that?"
"Because," Darius said sadly, "I just realized I've been betrayed. Someone in Haven's Rest has been sending her information."
Before I could ask what he meant, alarms started screaming outside. Red lights flashed through the window.
Darius ran to look outside, and I heard him curse under his breath.
"What is it?" I asked.
"They're here," he said, his voice filled with fear. "The Celestial Guard. My mother's personal army."
I looked out the window and saw them. Hundreds of dogs in golden armor, surrounding Haven's Rest. They all carried guns that glowed with magical energy.
"We have to run," I said.
"There's nowhere to run," Darius answered. "They've surrounded us completely."
That's when I saw her. A woman with gray hair and cold eyes, walking at the front of the army. Even from a distance, I could feel the power coming from her.
"High Priestess Morgana," Darius whispered.
The woman raised her hand, and her words echoed across the entire sanctuary, magically amplified so everyone could hear.
"My dear son," she called out sweetly. "I've come to gather what belongs to me. Send out the StarBlood girl, and I promise your little friends won't get hurt."
Darius's hands clenched into fists. "She's lying. She'll kill everyone here either way."
"Darius," Morgana continued, "you have one hour to decide. The girl's life... or the lives of everyone in your precious refuge."
The magical amplification cut off, leaving us in terrible quiet.
I looked at Darius, then at all the happy, innocent people outside who had welcomed me without question.
"I have to go to her," I said.
"Absolutely not."
"She'll kill everyone if I don't!"
"She'll kill everyone anyway!" Darius grabbed my shoulders. "Lyra, if she completes that rite, she won't just rule over werewolves. She'll have enough power to enslave every person on Earth. Billions of people will suffer."
I felt tears running down my face. No matter what I picked, people would die. And it would be my fault.
"There has to be another way," I breathed.
Darius was quiet for a long moment. Then his eyes lit up with a dangerous idea.
"There is," he said slowly. "But it's incredibly risky."
"Tell me."
"What if we gave my mother exactly what she wants?"
I looked at him. "You want me to let her sacrifice me?"
"No," Darius said, and his smile was sharp as a blade. "I want us to make her think she's won... right before we destroy her from the inside."
