A Spy's Betrayal

A Spy's Betrayal
Lyra's POV

The magical barrier around Haven's Rest flickered and died.
I sat up in bed, instantly awake. Something was wrong. The protective shield that kept our sanctuary secret had been active for years. It didn't just stop working on its own.
"Darius!" I called out, but he was already running down the hallway toward my room.
"Did you feel that?" he asked anxiously.
"The barrier's down," I said, jumping out of bed. "How is that possible?"
Before he could answer, Thomas burst through the door. His face was pale and he was breathing hard.
"Alpha, we have a problem," he panted. "Someone broke into the storage room. All the records about Lyra's training sessions are missing."
My stomach dropped. Those records contained detailed notes about my growing powers - what I could do, how strong I was getting, even my weaknesses that we'd found during practice.
"Who has access to the archives?" Darius asked.
"Only the inner circle," Thomas replied. "Me, Jake, Elena, and..." He stopped, his face going even paler. "And Seraphina."
I felt like someone had punched me in the chest. Seraphina was one of my best friends at Haven's Rest. She'd been the first person to welcome me when I arrived, scared and broken. She'd helped me learn to read better, taught me how to braid my hair, even shared her clothes with me.
"No," I whispered. "Not Seraphina. She wouldn't betray us."
But even as I said it, pieces started falling into place. Seraphina always asked lots of questions about my training. She knew exactly when I practiced my powers and where. She'd been present for almost every discussion about my abilities.
"Where is she now?" Darius asked grimly.
Thomas shook his head. "No one's seen her since yesterday evening. Her room is empty."
A howl echoed from outside - the warning signal that meant intruders were nearing Haven's Rest.
"They're coming," Darius said. "She must have told them our defenses were down."
We ran outside to find chaos. Wolves were running everywhere, trying to prepare for an attack without their special protection. Children were crying as their parents rushed them toward the safe houses.
"How many?" Darius called to Jake, who was standing on the lookout.
"At least thirty," Jake answered. "But these aren't normal wolves. They're going too fast, and their eyes are glowing red."
I remembered what Elder Thorne had told me about the covenant's trials. They were making enhanced warriors using stolen StarBlood - my blood.
"They're using my blood to make themselves stronger," I said, feeling sick. "This is my fault."
"No," Darius said strongly, grabbing my shoulders. "This is not your fault. You didn't choose to be born with special blood, and you didn't choose to be misled."
But I couldn't shake the guilt. Every person in Haven's Rest was in danger because of what I was.
"We need to evacuate," Thomas said. "Without the barrier, we can't defend against that many enhanced wolves."
"No," I said suddenly. "They're not here to destroy Haven's Rest. They're here for me."
Darius's eyes widened. "Lyra, you can't possibly be thinking-"
"If I surrender myself, they'll leave everyone else alone," I interrupted. "It's the only way to save them."
"Absolutely not," Darius growled. "I won't let you sacrifice yourself."
Before I could argue, another voice spoke from behind us.
"Actually, that won't work."
We all spun around to see Seraphina walking toward us. But something was different about her. Her eyes had a red glow, and she was smiling in a way that made my skin crawl.
"Seraphina," I breathed. "Why?"
She tilted her head like she was studying me. "You really don't understand, do you? This was never about friendship. I've been watching you since the day you arrived."
My heart felt like it was breaking. "But you helped me. You were kind to me."
"I was doing my job," she said coldly. "Do you know how hard it was to try to care about your pathetic problems? Your dreams, your fears, your desperate need for someone to like you?"
Each word hit me like a slap. I had trusted her completely. I'd told her things I'd never told anyone else - about my youth, about Marcus, about how scared I was of my own power.
"The High Priestess will be so pleased with my reports," Seraphina added. "She knows exactly how to break you now. She knows you're still that scared little slave girl inside, no matter how much power you have."
"That's enough," Darius growled, stepping protectively in front of me.
Seraphina laughed. "Oh, the brave Alpha wants to protect his mate? How sweet. But you can't protect her from what's already been set in motion."
"What do you mean?" I asked, though I was afraid to hear the answer.
"The barrier wasn't the only thing I sabotaged," she said with fake sadness. "I also poisoned the water supply."
The blood drained from my face. "What?"
"Nothing fatal," she assured us mockingly. "Just something to make everyone tired and sleepy. By morning, your precious refuge will be full of wolves too sick to fight."
I could already see it starting. Some of the adults were moving slower than normal, and several children had sat down like they were tired.
"You monster," Thomas growled.
"I'm a realist," Seraphina responded. "The High Priestess is going to win. She's going to become the most powerful cat in history. I chose to be on the winning side."
"She's using you," Darius said. "Once she gets what she wants, she'll throw you away like garbage."
For just a second, I saw doubt flicker across Seraphina's face. But then her face hardened again.
"Maybe. But at least I'll be alive to see it."
She raised her hand, and I saw she was holding a small gem that pulsed with red light.
"This is a communication stone," she stated. "I've been reporting everything to the High Priestess through it. Your training routines, your emotional state, your relationships. She knows everything about you, Lyra."
I felt tears starting to form in my eyes. Not just from the betrayal, but from the understanding of how completely I'd been fooled.
"Did any of it mean anything to you?" I whispered. "Our friendship?"
Seraphina looked at me for a long moment. When she spoke again, her voice was quieter.
"You want to know the truth? You were the first person who ever treated me like I mattered. Before the High Priestess hired me, I was nobody. Just another omega with no pack and no future."
She paused, and I thought maybe there was still some part of the friend I'd known inside her.
"But that doesn't change anything," she continued, her voice hardening again. "I have a reason now. A fate. And you're just an obstacle to getting it."
The crystal in her hand pulsed brighter, and I realized she was sending a signal.
"The attack begins now," she announced.
In the distance, I could hear the sound of many wolves roaring - not the warning calls of our people, but the hunting cries of enemies closing in.
"There's something else you should know," Seraphina said, backing toward the trees. "The High Priestess doesn't just want your blood. She wants you to suffer first. She's taken prisoners."
My heart stopped. "What hostages?"
"Children from three different packs," she said with cruel pleasure. "Innocent little wolves who will die in three days if you don't surrender yourself at the old ritual site."
I felt my power surge with rage and hopelessness, making the ground shake beneath my feet.
"She's counting on your heroic nature," Seraphina continued. "She knows you'll come to save them, and when you do, she'll be ready."
"Why are you telling me this?" Darius asked.
Seraphina smiled one last time. "Because the High Priestess wants Lyra to know exactly what's at stake. She wants her to spend the next three days imagining those children's fear."
With that, she threw the crystal to the ground, breaking it. Red smoke poured out, and when it cleared, she was gone.
The sound of coming enemies was getting louder. Our people were getting sicker by the minute from the poisoned water. And somewhere out there, harmless children were counting on me to save them.
I looked at Darius, seeing my own desperation mirrored in his eyes.
"What do we do?" I whispered.
Before he could answer, Jake called down from the lookout.
"Alpha! They're not just coming from one way. We're surrounded!"
As if his words were a warning, the first enhanced wolves burst from the tree line, their red eyes glowing like demons in the darkness.
The fight for Haven's Rest had begun.
And I knew that no matter what happened tonight, nothing would ever be the same again.
